About Flexport:
At Flexport, we believe global trade can move the human race forward. That’s why it’s our mission to make global commerce so easy there will be more of it. We’re shaping the future of a $10T industry with solutions powered by innovative technology and exceptional people. Today, companies of all sizes—from emerging brands to Fortune 500s—use Flexport technology to move more than $19B of merchandise across 112 countries a year.
The recent global supply chain crisis has put Flexport center stage as we continue to play a pivotal role in how goods move around the world. We are proud to have the support of the best investors in the game who believe in our mission, solutions and people. Ready to tackle global challenges that impact business, society, and the environment? Come join us.
At Flexport, we are building the unified Supply Chain Operating System for global trade. While traditional SaaS companies sell static dashboards and walk away, Flexport's Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) embed directly on the frontlines with enterprise clients (such as Fortune 500 retailers, automotive manufacturers, and tech giants) to solve high-stakes supply chain challenges.
You are an operational strike-team leader who sits at the intersection of full-stack software engineering, applied AI, operations research, and executive client strategy. Deployed to client command centers and logistics hubs, you will connect fragmented enterprise data, architect solutions, and build agentic AI systems that optimize real-world cargo moving across ocean, air, and land.
You won't just write code in a vacuum, you will embed with client engineering leaders and VPs of Supply Chain, map messy operational reality into production software, and deploy autonomous workflows that directly eliminate millions in logistics waste.
You Will
Embed & Map: Travel to client sites to map end-to-end supply chain processes, audit legacy systems, uncover hidden financial leaks, and translate complex operational constraints into technical architectures.
Design and build production solutions spanning customer applications, internal tools, APIs, data pipelines, decision-support systems, and workflow automations connecting directly to client ERPs (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite), WMS, and TMS systems
Build & Deploy Applied AI Solutions: Design and ship production-grade AI applications, agentic LLM workflows, and decision engines.
Solve Complex Mathematical Optimization: Apply optimization algorithms and analytical methods to real-world logistics challenges to problems such as routing, mode selection, inventory positioning, container utilization, consolidation, and exception prioritization.
Own the 90-Day Sprint Lifecycle: Drive high-velocity deployment sprints, taking solutions from discovery and architecture to live production deployment, operator adoption, and verified hard-dollar ROI measurement.
Productize the Field: Partner closely with Flexport core Product and Platform Engineering teams to turn custom, field-tested client builds into reusable platform capabilities for our global logistics engine.
Bridge Engineering & Operations: Work side-by-side with frontline logistics teams at ports, cross-docks, and client sites to validate code in live operational workflows, train users, and ensure lasting adoption.
Drive Executive Decisions: Communicate technical trade-offs, system architecture, and financial outcomes directly to client technical leaders and C-suite executives.
You Should Have
Educational Background: BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
Full-Stack Production Engineering: 4+ years of professional software engineering experience building customer-facing or mission-critical applications (Python, TypeScript/React, SQL, REST/GraphQL APIs, relational databases, and event-driven architectures).
Hands-on AI & Systems Experience: Demonstrated ability to build and integrate AI/ML solutions (LLM orchestration, agentic workflows, machine learning models, or mathematical optimization solvers).
Data & System Architecture Mastery: Strong skills in designing data models, pipeline transformations (ETL), API integrations, and event-driven workflows across complex enterprise software architectures.
Customer-Facing Drive: Passion for going on-site, whiteboarding complex workflows with executive stakeholders, sitting with frontline operators, and building deep trust with technical and business teams.
Systems Thinking & Problem Solving: Ability to reason through messy real-world data, imperfect operational dependencies, and economic trade-offs under high-ambiguity conditions.
Bias for Action & Ownership: High autonomy, self-starter mentality, and a track record of delivering end-to-end projects with measurable financial or operational impact.
Mobility: Willingness to travel to customer headquarters and logistics sites as needed to work directly on the operational frontline.
Bonus Points (What Will Make You Stand Out)
Domain knowledge in global supply chain, ocean/air freight, customs compliance, warehousing, inventory management, or trade financing.
Background in Operations Research (linear programming, network optimization, route planning, queueing theory) and enterprise implementation
Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Architect, Technical Consultant, or Founding Engineer in a fast-paced environment
Location: San Francisco, CA (up to 50% travel required)

Build the programs to help Flexport grow
Since 2020, Flexport's Automation Engineering team (formerly the Low Code team) has used tools like Retool, n8n, Python/Streamlit, and Apps Script to automate the "long tail" of operational complexity across Customs — delivering millions of dollars in ROI. As Flexport moves upmarket, more clients need custom integrations to onboard successfully, and this is the team that builds those solutions quickly and pragmatically.
The Opportunity
You'll build the integrations and automations that let Flexport's customs clients onboard quickly and smoothly. Partnering closely with Customs Business Development, brokerage operations, and client teams, you'll turn business requirements into working solutions — from API/EDI data flows to bespoke automations — for some of Flexport's largest and most complex accounts, many of them migrating from competitors with a high bar from day one. It's high-impact, high-visibility work on a small team that ships fast and sees its ROI directly.
You Will
Build, deploy, and maintain production-grade integrations and automations using Retool, n8n, Python/Streamlit, Apps Script, and SQL.
Partner with Customs BD, operations, and business units to translate business requirements into technical requirements and solutions.
Own the rollout, monitoring, and iteration of the tools you build, with an eye on reliability and client impact.
Document your solutions so they are easy for others to adopt, use, and maintain.
You Should Have
1-3 years of experience building automations, integrations, or software in a data-rich environment.
Working proficiency in JavaScript or Python for data transformation, business logic, and dynamic queries.
Advanced SQL.
Experience consuming REST APIs (GraphQL a plus).
Familiarity with Git-based version control and feature branching (e.g., GitHub).
Low-code/workflow tools (Retool, n8n) and EDI/integration exposure are a plus.
A "compliance first" attitude to keep our regulators happy and enthusiastic about Flexport since we operate in a heavily regulated industry.

About Flexport:

We are proud to have the support of the best investors in the game who believe in our mission, solutions and people. Ready to tackle global challenges that impact business, society, and the environment? Come join us.
The Opportunity
The Autonomous Freight Systems team is a brand new, AI-first engineering team in San Francisco, building Flexport's client-facing rates platform and self-serve freight booking experience from the ground up. We own two of the highest-leverage surfaces in the Client App: how clients see pricing and how they book freight without manual intervention.
As a Senior Engineer, you will own significant technical domains end-to-end, not just features, but whole problem spaces. You will drive the engineering of systems that power rate visibility, pricing intelligence, and AI-assisted booking across ocean, air, and trucking. You don't wait to be told what to build next; you identify the highest-leverage problems, propose solutions, and see them through to production. You will be a technical force multiplier on the team: raising the bar on code quality, helping junior engineers grow, and shipping with a velocity and confidence that comes from deep ownership.
This is a ground-floor opportunity to build the platform that moves Flexport from an assisted-sales model to a tech-run one for the long tail of our client base—turning the complexity of global trade into a seamless digital experience for thousands of shippers.
You Will
Take end-to-end technical ownership of core systems: from schema design and backend APIs to the React surfaces our customers use and drive them to production without needing oversight.
Proactively identify gaps, inefficiencies, and engineering problems within your domain and lead the effort to resolve them.
Design and build AI-powered features and integrations, moving beyond "AI familiarity" to hands-on implementation of agent workflows and LLM-backed automation in production.
Drive technical design for significant features, producing well-reasoned proposals and aligning teammates before writing the first line of code.
Mentor and support P2 engineers through code review, pairing, and design feedback, raising the quality of the team's output.
Collaborate closely with product, design, pricing, and operations to translate complex domain problems into elegant, production-ready solutions.
Build and ship incrementally: this team deploys to production dozens of times per day, and you are comfortable with that pace.
Ensure reliability and quality by building in metrics, monitoring, and applying learnings from incidents to all systems you own.
You Should Have
5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a proven track record of shipping production-grade systems with increasing levels of independence.
Deep Ownership Instinct: You hold yourself accountable for outcomes, not just outputs. When something breaks, you fix it—and you make sure it doesn't break again.
Full-Stack Fluency: You can own a feature from the database to the browser. You are opinionated about schema design, API contracts, and frontend architecture, not just one layer.
AI/LLM Hands-On Experience: You have built software that integrates LLMs into real user workflows—not just proof-of-concepts, but production systems. You understand the practical challenges: latency, reliability, prompt fragility, and cost.
Agency and Drive: You identify the next most important problem without being asked. You default to action, propose solutions, and bring others along.
Technical Rigor: A genuine passion for simple, well-tested, well-structured code. You push back on complexity and leave systems better than you found them.
Communication: You can explain a technical tradeoff clearly to a product manager and to a staff engineer. Your design docs and code reviews are worth reading.
Proficiency with deploying, monitoring, and maintaining production services on cloud infrastructure (AWS).
It's a Plus If You Have
Experience with elements of our tech stack: Java, Spring Boot, Ruby on Rails, React, AWS.
Familiarity with agentic patterns, RAG, or workflow orchestration (e.g., Temporal).
Experience in logistics, supply chain, freight technology, or pricing systems.
A bias for action: when you see a problem, you own the fix.

The opportunity
The Autonomous Freight Systems team is a brand new, AI-first engineering team in San Francisco. This team will own Flexport’s client-facing rates platform and the self-serve freight booking experience—two of the highest-leverage surfaces in our Client App that dictate how clients see pricing and book freight without manual intervention.
As a Staff Engineer, you will be the technical anchor for our next-generation AI-powered rates platform. We aren't just building a UI; we are building AI agents that handle real logistics work: parsing complex rate sheets, managing pricing intelligence across ocean, air, and trucking, and making "Self-Serve" a reality for thousands of shippers. You will build the intelligence layer that allows clients to commit freight on technology alone, with no account executive and no operations touch.
This is a ground-floor opportunity to shape technical direction, set up a new codebase, and build the platform that moves Flexport from an assisted-sales model to a tech-run one for the long tail of our client base. You will partner with Pricing, Sales, Ops, and Design on hard domain problems and ship to the most-used client surfaces at the company.
You will
Design and ship end-to-end AI agents that handle pricing intelligence and booking compliance without human oversight.
Create the tooling and secure AI infrastructure required to expose internal logistics data to LLMs safely.
Navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of agent patterns, RAG, and prompt engineering to solve problems that don’t have "Stack Overflow" answers yet.
Build and launch products rapidly and incrementally: we ship to production dozens of times per day.
Mentor and uplevel engineers across the team, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
Partner with the Engineering Manager to define the team’s technical roadmap and hiring bar.
You should have
LLM Fluency: Experience with agent patterns, RAG, and prompt engineering. You know what works in production versus what only looks good in a demo.
Agentic Orchestration: Experience with workflow orchestration (e.g., Temporal) and building reliable systems around non-deterministic AI.
Entrepreneurial Drive: You don't wait for a spec; you find the highest-leverage automation problems and design the AI-driven solution.
Product Instincts: You can identify what is worth building, not just execute on a spec. You have a proven track record of building data-heavy applications where high-quality user interaction is the priority.
Architecture Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams or systems, specifically in building unified interfaces that aggregate data from various backend systems.
Technical Rigor: A love of simple, well-tested code that is easy to extend and hard to break, combined with experience building large-scale distributed systems.
Technical Communication: The ability to convey technical ideas in common terms to business partners, product managers, and engineers alike.
It's a plus if you have
Experience with elements of our tech stack: Java, Spring Boot, Ruby on Rails, React, AWS.
Experience in logistics, supply chain, or freight technology.
Experience building internal tools or operator-facing applications.
A bias for action: When you see a problem, you solve it.
