Position Overview:
General Fusion is searching for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Controls & Electronics team on our path to commercial fusion. You will be a key member of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team delivering the control systems, data acquisition pipelines, and electronics that support our experimental operations. You'll report to the Manager, Pulsed Power Systems, bringing your extensive experience designing and deploying electrical systems to our one-of-a-kind experimental machines, where reliable operation in a noisy electrical environment is mission-critical.
The position is located on site at General Fusion's Richmond, BC facility, and may require occasional shift work or flexible hours to support experimental campaigns.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as a technical authority in electrical engineering, helping the team isolate and resolve the signal and system-level issues encountered in experimental operations.
Provide guidance and mentorship on electrical design standards, best practices, and technical decision-making.
Design, develop, and commission data acquisition systems that maintain signal integrity in electrically noisy, high-voltage, pulsed-power environments.
Architect analog and digital signal chains - conditioning, isolation, digitization, and transmission - that deliver trustworthy measurements from sensor to recorded data.
Conduct and guide design reviews, from requirements, to schematic design, through PCB layout, and testing plans.
Own full hardware development lifecycle from concept, requirements, schematic design, PCB layout, prototyping, testing and production release.
Develop grounding, shielding, and isolation strategies (including fiber-optic and galvanically isolated links) to suppress noise and protect instrumentation from transients.
Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization, gathering and translating requirements from physics, mechanical, electrical, and software teams into robust, supportable electronic solutions.
Troubleshoot and characterize system performance in the lab, using measurement and diagnostic techniques to distinguish real signals from noise, coupling, and artifacts.
Document designs, calibration procedures, and test results to ensure systems are maintainable and repeatable across the team.
Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with applicable electrical, machine safety, and lab safety standards.
Skills and Experience
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent.
10+ years of progressive experience designing, deploying, and commissioning electrical/electronic systems in R&D, manufacturing, or process environments.
Experience designing and deploying data acquisition systems in high-EMI / high-voltage environments, maintaining signal integrity in the presence of pulsed power transients.
Hands-on experience with grounding, shielding, isolation, and common-mode rejection techniques to suppress noise from switching and pulsed sources.
Ability to transmit analog and digital signals reliably in noisy environments.
Expertise in analog signal conditioning and high-speed digitization (amplification, filtering, anti-aliasing, ADC selection, sampling/timing trade-offs).
Familiarity with high-voltage and high-current measurement techniques (e.g., resistive/capacitive dividers, Pearson and Rogowski coils, current transformers) and their bandwidth/calibration limitations.
Proficiency with electrical design and simulation software such as Altium and LTSpice.
Comfortable working in a fast-moving experimental environment where requirements are often ambiguous and change quickly.
Ability to make decisions and trade-offs that guide projects to a successful conclusion in the absence of complete information and where there may be no clear path to the solution.
Excellent technical communication skills, including clear documentation and the ability to present architectural decisions to multidisciplinary audiences.
Understands the value of configuration management and right-sizes it for the situation.
Commitment to safe work practices in a lab or R&D environment.
Preferred
Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
Experience in fusion, high-energy physics, particle accelerator, semiconductor, or similar high-tech R&D facilities.
Proficiency with general-purpose programming languages (Python, C, C++, C#) for tooling, scripting, and data analysis.
Experience managing engineering teams.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC or eligibility for registration, including experience authenticating work under that designation.
The typical hiring range for this position is $140,000 - $170,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation including job specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity

Position Overview:
This posting is for multiple openings (4 positions) within the team.
The Mechanical Engineer will be a key contributor in a team responsible for designing, building and operating mechanical systems in support of General Fusion’s LM26 project. The successful applicant will be expected to hit the ground running and thrive in a fast-paced and constantly evolving work environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking for diverse and challenging work where ideas quickly become the prototypes and machines used by General Fusion to develop practical fusion energy solutions.
Responsibilities:
Mechanical design for complex engineering challenges which require out-of-the-box thinking and novel concepts, including analytical calculations and FEA as required to validate designs
Conceive proof-of-concept prototypes and tests, build and operate test jigs, and analyze test results
Design and install components that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of mechanical systems that are critical to project success
Design, build, commission, and operate complete mechanical systems that are critical to the overall success of large integrated projects
Document design details, test plans, and experimental results
React quickly to changing requirements and unforeseen issues to ensure machine uptime
Work with a team of engineers and technicians in the lab to ensure the on-time completion of project deliverables
Work with partners and suppliers in the design of key systems and components, often sourcing components that push the limits of fabrication and availability
Contribute to the growth of the team by actively participating in ideation, troubleshooting and problem-solving discussions
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or engineering physics (with mechanical specialization)
Minimum 3 years’ experience in practical mechanical design and design implementation
Strong knowledge of, and proven experience applying engineering and physics fundamentals, including statics and dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
Excellent mechanical aptitude with a strong desire to work hands-on with the components of the design, including prototyping, operating, analyzing, and iterating
Experience creating prototypes and/or tests, and analyzing results, to prove out concepts
Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive the success of individual projects from start to finish, including collaboration and integration with other teams and systems
Good understanding of materials and fabrication methods
Good understanding of GD&T and the implications of tolerancing on parts and assemblies.
Proven ability to pivot and identify opportunities to adjust scope and deliver in a rapidly changing work environment
Preferred:
Registration with EGBC as an EIT or Professional Engineer, or on-track to complete registration
Working knowledge of Solidworks and Solidworks PDM
Experience designing components for use in harsh and demanding environments (such as high vacuum, high energy, high cleanliness), and for problems where there is little prior art or precedent to draw from

Position Overview:
General Fusion is searching for an experienced Controls Engineer to join our Controls & Electronics team on our path to commercial fusion. Reporting to the Manager, Controls & Electronics, you will bring deep industry experience in controls system design and high-voltage safety to our one-of-a-kind experimental machines - helping shape the controls architecture that ties together the high-voltage pulsed power, vacuum, gas handling, and diagnostic systems behind our plasma physics experiments.
You will be part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team delivering the control systems, data acquisition pipelines, and electronics that support our experimental operations. The position is primarily located on site at General Fusion's facilities in Richmond, BC, and may require occasional shift work or flexible hours to support experimental campaigns.
Key Responsibilities:
Contribute to shaping the architecture of General Fusion's next-generation control systems, with a focus on robust, scalable, and well-instrumented solutions.
Architect PLC, motion control, and data acquisition solutions across plasma physics experiments and supporting subsystems - specifying hardware (controllers, I/O, drives, networking) and defining software structure, libraries, HMI patterns, and operator interfaces.
Lead the design of safety systems for high-voltage equipment, ensuring compliance with applicable functional safety and machine safety standards (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 62061).
Drive integration of controls with diagnostics, pulsed power, vacuum, cryogenics, gas handling, and other electromechanical subsystems.
Make pragmatic build/buy/refactor decisions and champion reusable libraries, clear interfaces, and code that is straightforward to operate and maintain.
Maintain control system documentation: architecture diagrams, P&IDs, electrical schematics, network topologies, sequence-of-operation descriptions, safety analyses, and software design documents.
Lead commissioning, tuning, and root cause analysis of complex, multi-disciplinary control system issues.
Contribute to project planning - scope, estimation, risk, and scheduling of controls work packages.
Collaborate cross-functionally with physics, mechanical, electrical, and software teams to translate experimental requirements into robust, supportable control solutions.
Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with applicable electrical, machine safety, and lab safety standards.
Required Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
5+ years of progressive experience designing, deploying, and commissioning industrial control systems in R&D, manufacturing, or process environments.
Self-motivated, takes initiative, and drives work to completion with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated experience defining the architecture of complex, multi-system control systems from the ground up - including hardware topology, software structure, data flow, and operator interaction.
Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills across electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
Demonstrated experience designing safety systems for high-voltage control systems, including E-Stop chains, interlock logic, and safety-rated I/O in automated environments.
Working knowledge of machine and functional safety standards, and proven ability to apply them as a technical authority within a team.
Expertise with PLC and HMI platforms (e.g., Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens, Allen-Bradley), including IEC 61131-3 languages, and a track record of writing PLC code that is reusable, testable, and maintainable.
Experience designing observability - structured logging, alarms, diagnostics, and operator visibility into system state.
Proficiency with electrical schematic capture and panel design (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical).
Excellent technical communication skills, including clear documentation and the ability to present architectural decisions to multidisciplinary audiences.
Commitment to safe work practices in a lab or R&D environment.
Preferred:
Registered with EGBC as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, OPC UA, etc.).
Experience leading a control system redesign or migration on an operating R&D or production system.
Experience in fusion, high-energy physics, particle accelerator, semiconductor, or similar high-tech R&D facilities.
Familiarity with high-voltage, pulsed power, vacuum, cryogenic, or high-current systems.
Hands-on experience with LabVIEW, Beckhoff TwinCAT and TwinCAT HMI development.
Proficiency with general-purpose programming languages (Python, C, C++, C#) for tooling, scripting, and data analysis.
Experience with time-series databases and large-scale experimental data pipelines.
Familiarity with version control and CI/CD practices for controls software (Git, Azure DevOps, etc.).
Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams.
