The Data Leader's Guide to AI Analytics
A practical roadmap for understanding and implementing AI to accelerate your data team and enable true self-service.
OPEN ROLE
Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Platform)
NYC or Remote (US)
We are looking for a Staff or Principal-level software engineer to join our Compute team.
Hex's Compute team owns one of the hardest performance problems in the product: our users do everything from analyzing 100-line CSV files to querying petabyte-scale Snowflake tables, and in all cases they expect it to feel fast. We power a technical product that our customers trust to accurately retrieve data from their own systems to then efficiently execute polyglot backed analytics workflows.
This is a backend-heavy role with a focus on computation, performance, data systems design, and systems architecture. You'll drive architectural decisions that compound over years, write the technical designs that shape how the team builds, and directly influence the long-term trajectory of Hex's compute platform — all while staying deeply hands-on in the codebase.
What you will do:
Evolve Hex's execution architecture — the graph-based system that compiles, plans, and runs user notebooks — including proposing and building entirely new compute components that support faster, smarter execution
Drive parallel execution strategies and caching approaches that reduce latency and minimize unnecessary round trips to external data warehouses
Instrument complex systems to surface and diagnose performance problems to give the team and our customers a much clearer picture of where time is being spent
Collaborate across engineering and product to support new platform capabilities, such as building an internal query language that compiles to the appropriate dialect for any connected warehouse
Author and review technical proposals, and mentor engineers to implement ambitious designs effectively
Propose and roadmap long-term designs with clear milestones across quarters
About You:
10+ years of backend engineering experience, with a strong focus on computation, performance, database/storage optimization, and systems architecture
Experience with parallel execution strategies, caching strategies, and the trade-offs involved in remote data warehouse computation. Strong systems thinker with solid intuitions around storage, database performance, algorithms, and data structures
A track record of solving difficult, large-scale systems design problems involving significant data and operational complexity — writing code and reviewing code of your teammates
The ability to move from abstract, vague problems to well-articulated, well-reasoned technical solutions — and to roadmap ambitious designs with clear milestones across quarters
A strong communicator; comfortable leading technical work and collaborating across a remote-first team
Python and/or TypeScript required; experience with both is a plus
Nice to have:
Working knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker and cloud infrastructure
Some frontend experience — this is a backend-focused role, but a willingness to occasionally wire a feature all the way through is a plus
This role is fully remote anywhere within the US Eastern timezone, with the option to work from our NYC office.
Our stack
Our product is a web-based notebook and app authoring platform. Our frontend is built with Typescript and React, using a combination of Apollo GraphQL and Redux for managing application state and data. On the backend, we also use Typescript to power an Express/Apollo GraphQL server that interacts with Postgres, Redis, and Kubernetes to manage our database and Python kernels. Our backend is tightly integrated with our infrastructure and CI/CD, where we use a combination of Terraform, Helm, and AWS to deploy and maintain our stack.
In addition to our unique culture, Hex proudly offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched salary & equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.
The salary range for this role is: $221,250 - $348,500
The salary range shown may be a reflection of additional factors such as geographical location and skill ranges/levels we’re open to. Placement in the salary range will be decided upon completion of the interview process, taking into account factors like leaving room for growth, internal fairness & parity, your demonstrated skills, and the depth of your experience. Our Recruiting team will be able to provide more details during the interview process.
By submitting an application the candidate consents to the use of their personal information in accordance with the Hex Privacy policy: https://learn.hex.tech/docs/trust/privacy-policy.

At Hex, we're deeply focused on building powerful, integrated AI features that augment and accelerate analytics workflows. The possibilities here are incredible, and we're uniquely positioned to reinvent how people think about understanding data.
In this role, you’ll work on a product team building complex workflows that increase the capabilities, reach, and ergonomics of Hex’s agentic analytics platform. We’re especially focused on features that enable Hex’s AI agent to operate across more customer segments and surface areas, including APIs, MCP, and command-line interfaces.
What you will do Our backend product engineers work on features across the entire Hex application. Here are some example projects:
Build and extend Hex’s API and CLI to enable powerful, ergonomic workflows for our most sophisticated technical users Design MCP server and client implementations to expand entry points into our capabilities Design and implement a next-generation access control system, including role-based access control (RBAC), admin request/approval flows, and tiered admin roles that scale with complex organizations Own full-stack product changes end-to-end, from backend policy enforcement to admin-facing workflows, ensuring these enterprise features are intuitive, reliable, and secure Propose and implement well-architected, scalable systems in collaboration with the broader Hex team About You 5+ years of backend or full-stack software engineering experience Skilled at building systems with high levels of complexity and intricate business logic Deep interest and/or experience in developing state-of-the-art agentic workflows involving disparate systems and tools Experience working in a remote-first team, with strong communication skills in that context A passion for technical collaboration, including RFCs, code reviews, and architecture discussions Hands-on familiarity with enterprise integrations: SSO, SCIM-based provisioning, audit logs, MFA, and delegated access A strategic mindset that balances business and product goals with engineering excellence—you understand tradeoffs between user value and technical complexity and operate pragmatically Willingness to make changes anywhere in the stack to drive impact Our stack Our product is a web-based notebook and app authoring platform. The Data Leader's Guide to AI Analytics
A practical roadmap for understanding and implementing AI to accelerate your data team and enable true self-service.
OPEN ROLE
Software Engineer, Backend (Platform)
NYC or Remote (US)
About the role
We are looking for a Senior or Staff-level software engineer to join our Backend Platform team.
Our team is responsible for building and maintaining Hex's core compute platform, which serves as the fundamental engine for all code execution, SQL querying, and data processing across the Hex application. Our platform powers everything from the core notebook interface and published applications to the complex data capabilities required by our AI agents.
Our mission is twofold: to make the compute platform exceptionally easy to use, develop on, and monitor, while also ensuring it is blazingly fast and performant. Engineers on this team operate at the challenging and rewarding intersection of systems architecture, API design, and deep performance optimization.
What you will do
On the Backend Platform team you’ll work on projects with high technical complexity and spanning across the stack, from our backend data systems to the frontend of Hex’s collaborative notebook interface.
Here are some examples of the kinds of projects you might tackle:
Using DuckDB to enable seamless data interoperability between Python and SQL code written by our users or AI agents
Building intelligent caching systems to speed up customer data queries
Implementing a graph-based dependency framework for optimizing multi-step execution plans
Instrumenting complex, multi-language systems to identify performance bottlenecks
Building visualizations into the product to help users understand the performance characteristics of their code
About you
6+ years of engineering experience working on complex, data-driven systems or applications
Expert-level understanding of Python, SQL, jupyter kernels, and/or data warehousing systems
Deeply informed on industry trends around data processing, databases, and performant data architectures
You love diving into highly complex codebases and have a passion for designing elegant abstractions that improve correctness and developer productivity
An inexhaustible desire to understand where every millisecond of time could be going
An instinct for strategic thinking and aligning with business and product goals while keeping a healthy balance of velocity and engineering excellence.
Experience working in a remote-first team and strong communication skills in this context.
This role is fully remote anywhere within the US Eastern timezone, with the option to work from our NYC office.
