About the company:
The mining industry has steadily become worse at finding new ore deposits, requiring >10X more capital to make discoveries compared to 30 years ago. The easy-to-find, near-surface deposits have largely been found, and the industry has chronically under-invested in new exploration technology, relying on the manual techniques of yesteryear – even as demand accelerates for copper, lithium, and other metals to build electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers.
KoBold builds AI models for mineral exploration and deploys those models—alongside our novel sensors—to guide decisions on KoBold-owned-and-operated exploration programs. In the six years since founding, KoBold has become by far both the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer. Our data scientists and software engineers, who come from leading technology companies, jointly lead exploration programs with our renowned exploration geologists.
KoBold has proven its first discovery with materially less capital than the industry average and found one of the best copper deposits ever discovered: the copper is far more concentrated than the global average of copper mines, and this asset alone is expected to generate meaningful revenue for decades. KoBold has a portfolio of more than 60 other projects, each of which has the potential for another high-quality discovery.
KoBold is privately held; investors include institutional asset managers T. Rowe Rice and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, and Standard Investments; and natural resources companies Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.
Responsibilities:
Build intuitive and elegant user experiences to empower fellow KoBolders with backgrounds in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and data science.
Own and improve KoBold’s existing web apps that manage data upload, discovery, search, and visualization.
Collaborate with scientists to architect new tools to support complex, interactive 2D/3D geospatial visualizations, plotting, and data labeling.
Champion frontend best practices. Modernize our stack to standardize our UIs, prototype faster, and deploy useful apps for our geologists and data scientists. Mentor junior developers.
Setup systems to automate the testing of our UIs.
Qualifications:
Experience in architecting, developing, and maintaining frontend applications that provide a rich user experience.
Experience in writing production-quality code that is correct, performant, scalable, and extensible.
Skilled with data visualization libraries (D3, Leaflet, etc).
Experience with the following: modern JavaScript tools (node.js, TypeScript, React, Angular, etc), modern deployment and cloud technologies, Python web frameworks (Django, Panel, Flask, etc), and classic frontend development (HTML, CSS, etc).
Bonus Qualifications
Experience with geospatial data and building map-based experiences.
Familiarity with containerization and container orchestration platforms, such as Docker, AWS ECS, Kubernetes, etc.
Experience with frontend automated-testing systems (Cypress, Selenium, etc).
A great candidate will also be:
Highly intellectually curious and eager to learn about all aspects of mineral exploration, particularly in the geology domain. Will be open to working directly with geologists in the field.
Excited to work on a wide range of problems in a dynamic work environment, to take on a wide range of responsibilities, and to learn new tech and science.
Keen not just to build cool technology, but to figure out what technical product to build to best achieve the business objectives of the company.
A strong communicator who enjoys working with colleagues across the company.
This position is Full-time.
The US base salary range for this full-time exempt position is $160,000 - $240,000.
Location: Remote, Candidates can be located anywhere in the United States or Canada. All candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States or Canada.
What to Expect
Joining KoBold means getting the opportunity for hands-on exposure to our exploration projects around the world. All employees are expected to travel to project sites, with a minimum of one week per year. Field-facing and technical roles spend significantly more time in the field.

Engineering Manager, Data Systems
Rowe Price and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, Durable Capital, StepStone, and Standard Investments; and natural resources companies Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.
About the role:
At KoBold, we believe making mineral exploration data broadly accessible to humans and machines will enable systematic exploration and materially improved exploration success rates. This role is a key ingredient to this strategy. As an early Engineering Manager on the Data Systems Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to shape how we build our product and organization to realize this vision. Through development of our robust data systems, we will empower KoBold to unlock invaluable insights and streamline intricate scientific processes. Collaborating with our exceptional team of data scientists and geologists, you will have the opportunity to tackle complex scientific problems head-on and collectively pave the way for the discoveries of vital energy transition metals like lithium, copper, nickel, and cobalt. Together we can shape the future of mineral exploration and contribute to building a sustainable world.
Responsibilities of this role include:
Thoughtfully build and lead a team of high-performing software engineers, hiring and growing diverse individuals on your team
Leverage your team in collaboration with data scientists, geoscientists, and other software engineers to plan, prioritize, and deliver impactful projects that accelerate our exploration efforts
Work with the Head of Data Systems Engineering and interdisciplinary leaders across the company on our strategy to advance both our technical product and organization
Collaborate with cross functional peers (geoscientists and data scientists) across the company, learning about mineral exploration. Coach your team to better partner across the company.
Spend roughly 1/3rd of your time contributing to projects as an individual contributor
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate will have:
8+ years experience building production software systems
3+ years in an engineering leadership role with reports
Experience building robust distributed cloud data systems. Bonus for experience building systems managing large geospatial or geoscientific datasets.
Deep understanding of multiple database and data storage technologies
A track record of taking ownership from definition of the problem and delivering large projects with demonstrated impact in an iterative manner
Skilled at dealing with ambiguity and prioritizing effectively from multiple inputs
Formal education or job exposure to natural sciences
Work practices and motivation:
Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn about all aspects of mineral exploration, particularly in the geology domain. Open to working directly with geologists in the field across the world. Enjoys constantly learning such that you are driving insights through using our tools in exploration.
Ability to explain technical problems to and collaborate on solutions with domain experts who are not software developers. A strong communicator who enjoys working with colleagues across the company.
Excitement about joining a fast-growing early-stage company, comfort with a dynamic work environment, and eagerness to take on an evolving range of responsibilities.
Keen not just to build cool technology, but to figure out what technical product to build to best achieve the business objectives of the company.
What to Expect
Joining KoBold means getting the opportunity for hands-on exposure to our exploration projects around the world. All employees are expected to travel to project sites, with a minimum of one week per year. Field-facing and technical roles spend significantly more time in the field.
KoBold Metals is an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer.
Since our founding in 2018, KoBold has become by far both the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer.
Rowe Price and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, Durable Capital, StepStone, and Standard Investments; and natural resources companies Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.
About the job:
The Senior Underground Mine Engineer will lead the mine design efforts for KoBold’s Mingomba project, including pre-feasibility and feasibility engineering studies. You will help to identify, design, and execute all mining engineering programs necessary to maximize the safety, feasibility, and value of our future mine. In addition, you will be responsible for the strategy, implementation and execution of mine design strategies consistent with development plans and in coordination with operations teams. You will also support all modeling work from district to mine scales in support of these goals. You will be responsible for building and fostering a collaborative relationship to support synergies with surrounding operators.
You will join an outstanding team of geoscientists, data scientists, and software engineers. You will be a core part of the project teams, supporting the advancement of the science and practice of exploration. You will support the development of novel data collection and monitoring programs. Working closely with geologists, hydrogeologists, and data scientists you will support construction of physics-based and data-driven models of the hydrogeology of our exploration sites and state-of-the-art water management strategies. A key challenge will be to quantify uncertainties relevant to mining, and to identify efficient means for reducing these uncertainties as the project advances.

We are open to hiring at multiple levels for this role, depending on experience, impact, and demonstrated ownership. While this role is level-agnostic, it is best suited for engineers with experience owning production systems and working in highly ambiguous problem spaces.
Software Engineer
About the company:
The mining industry has steadily become worse at finding new ore deposits, requiring >10X more capital to make discoveries compared to 30 years ago. The easy-to-find, near-surface deposits have largely been found, and the industry has chronically under-invested in new exploration technology, relying on the manual techniques of yesteryear – even as demand accelerates for copper, lithium, and other metals to build electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers.

KoBold is privately held; investors include institutional asset managers T. Rowe Price and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, and Standard Investments; and natural resources companies Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.
We are hiring Software Engineers to accelerate our mission.
About The Role:
At KoBold, software engineers have the unique opportunity to embed directly with their users and learn the ins and outs of mineral exploration and geology while developing state of the art technology solutions. Unlike traditional software engineering roles, we don’t simply ship code and passively wait for feedback about its utility: our userbase includes our colleagues… and ourselves! While there are real technical challenges in making mineral exploration data broadly searchable and accessible to both humans and machines, we believe that solving these technical challenges cannot be done without “getting our hands dirty” – sometimes literally! – by embedding directly with the exploration teams and even occasionally (~once a year) joining our colleagues in the field, be it in Zambia, Canada, or Arizona, to experience the impact of our software in real time.
As a Software Engineer on the Data Systems Engineering team at KoBold, your main role will be to enable systematic exploration and materially improve exploration success rates by making mineral exploration data broadly accessible to humans and machines. Past projects have included SIP (the Structured Ingest Pipeline), DataKit generation (producing curated sets of data on demand), and RAG (Retrieval Augmentation Generation, utilizing natural language processing on unstructured data). Our tech stack is primarily python and includes Django, React, AWS, and additional technologies like Retool and Prefect.
Your work will empower KoBold to unlock invaluable insights and streamline intricate scientific processes. Collaborating with our exceptional team of data scientists, geologists, and other software engineers, you will have the opportunity to tackle complex problems head-on and collectively pave the way for the discoveries of vital energy transition metals like lithium, copper, nickel, and cobalt. Together we can shape the future of mineral exploration and contribute to building a sustainable world.
This role be responsible for:
Deep engagement with exploration geologists and data scientists, continual learning about mineral exploration, and tailoring technology development to the needs of exploration project scientists
Building data pipelines and tooling for deriving advanced human and machine insights from exploration data, often leading a small group of software engineers to successful delivery
Developing expertise in KoBold’s Data Systems and deeply understanding how they impact exploration
End-to-end ownership of projects from design to implementation and testing to continued engagement with colleagues on exploration teams using your solutions
Responding well to design and code feedback, also providing feedback to teammates
Operationally managing the team’s services and assisting scientific colleagues with our tooling
Qualifications
4+ years of software engineering experience, ideally building production cloud data systems
Proficiency with Python
Ability to write production-quality code that is correct, readable, well-tested, scalable and extensible
Skilled in large-scale system design
A track record of taking ownership from definition of the problem and delivering projects with demonstrated impact in an iterative manner
Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn about all aspects of mineral exploration, particularly in the geology domain. Enjoys constantly learning such that you are driving insights through using our tools in exploration and willing to work directly with geologists in the field.
Nice to Haves
Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React
Experience with geospatial data and building map-based experiences
Familiarity with containerization and container orchestration platforms, such as Docker, AWS ECS, Kubernetes, etc.
Formal education or job exposure to natural sciences
The US base salary range for this full-time exempt position is $150,000 - $240,000.
Location: KoBold is a remote-first workplace. All candidates must be legally authorized to work in one of the following countries: United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Finland, Sweden, or Botswana.
What to Expect
Joining KoBold means getting the opportunity for hands-on exposure to our exploration projects around the world. All employees are expected to travel to project sites, with a minimum of one week per year. Field-facing and technical roles spend significantly more time in the field.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?
We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.
Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.

About the company
KoBold Metals is a mineral exploration company using AI to explore for the metals we need for our transition to a low-carbon economy. KoBold’s business is discovering, defining, expanding, and developing mineral resources, and KoBold’s objective is to achieve a step-change improvement in exploration success: we aim to discover more tier 1 resources, faster, and with fewer failures.
KoBold has a global portfolio of more than 80 exploration properties targeting nickel, copper, cobalt, and lithium, which range from 100%-owned to partnerships with both majors, junior explorers, and prospectors.
Our team includes the best of the industry in exploration geoscience, data science, software engineering, operations, and business personnel. Prior to joining KoBold, KoBold team members have made nearly 20 discoveries. Our exploration programs are co-led by our geoscientists and data scientists, who develop exploration hypotheses, rigorously quantify uncertainty in our understanding of the subsurface, and design data collection programs that most effectively reduce uncertainty, drawing upon a large suite of proprietary exploration technology built by our data scientists and software engineers. Our field programs validate and improve the system and have demonstrated material improvements over conventional exploration methods
KoBold is privately held and our investors include: institutional asset managers T. Rowe Rice and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, Standard Investments, and Sam Altman’s Apollo Projects; and leading natural resources companies Equinor, Mitsubishi, and BHP.
We are hiring a Data Scientists to help accelerate our mission.
About the position
In this role, you will build predictive models and apply a wide range of scientific computing, statistical, and physics-based methods to find places where there is evidence of ore-forming processes at work and to predict the locations of ore-grade mineralization in 2D and 3D. You will help build a worldwide dataset that underlies our exploration program, with careful attention to identifying and quantifying uncertainty in the data and in our predictions. You will create models and develop software to accelerate discovery of critical battery metals.
You will join an outstanding team of data scientists and engineers and will work closely with KoBold’s world-renowned geoscientists to incorporate our best understanding of the chemical and physical processes that create ore deposits. Working with your geoscience colleagues, you will create 2D and 3D geologic predictions, identify exploration targets, design field programs to collect data, and use that data to reduce the uncertainty in our predictions and guide the next phase of field work.
Ultimately, your role is to help KoBold make valuable discoveries by building data tools to solve scientific problems. As one of the early members of this team, you will help build these tools from the ground up.
Responsibilities
The Data Scientist will:
Help develop KoBold’s proprietary software exploration tools.
Find and curate geophysical, geochemical, geologic, and geographic data and integrate it into KoBold’s proprietary data system.
Build models to make statistically valid predictions about the locations of compositional anomalies within the Earth’s crust.
Create effective visualizations for evaluating model performance and enabling rapid interaction with the underlying data and key features.
Develop and apply data processing, statistical, and physics-based techniques to geoscientific data — from computer vision to geophysical inversions — and use the results to guide our targeting efforts and inform our acquisition and exploration decisions.
Present to and collaborate with our external partners and stakeholders.
Qualifications
A great Data Scientist candidate will have:
Technical skills, including extensive experience with:
Python’s data science packages and general software engineering practices.
Collaborative software development (git), and familiarity with software engineering best practices like unit test / integration test suites, and CICD pipelines.
Cloud computing resources.
Building predictive models, applying them to different problems, and evaluating and interpreting the results.
Data from a variety of physical systems.
Geospatial analyses and visualizations.
Technical knowledge:
Broad skills in and knowledge of applied statistics and Bayesian inference
Substantial understanding of machine learning algorithms
Training and work experience:
An advanced degree in the physical sciences, engineering, computer science, or mathematics.
A minimum work experience of 4 years post PhD or 8 years post MS, ideally as a data scientist or data engineer.
Experience leading technical teams to apply novel scientific approaches to core business problems
Work practices and motivation:
Ability to take ownership and responsibility of large projects.
Ability to explain technical problems to and collaborate on solutions with domain experts.
Communicates well on a collaborative, cross-functional team.
Excitement about joining a fast-growing early-stage company, comfort with a dynamic work environment, and eagerness to take on a range of responsibilities.
Ability to independently prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn about all aspects of mineral exploration, particularly in the geology domain.
Enjoys constantly learning such that you are driving insights through using our tools in exploration and willing to work directly with geologists in the field.
Keen not just to build cool technology, but to figure out what technical product to build to best achieve the business objectives of the company.
A valid passport and willingness to travel to observe our work at Mingomba or at an exploration site around the world.
It is also helpful but not required to have experience with:
Creating machine learning models on geospatial data
Geostatistics
Image processing or computer vision
Distributed computing applications for machine learning and other computations
