Backend Engineer
Octopus Energy started with a bold idea: to build Britain’s first truly digital energy supplier.
By combining world-class tech with brilliant humans who care deeply about customers and driving the renewable energy transition, we made it happen and in 2025, we became Britain’s largest energy supplier.
Now, we’re scaling fast and building the next generation of products to accelerate the green energy transition. From making it effortless to switch to heat pumps, solar and EVs, to launching smart tariffs and creating renewable generation at scale, we’re solving some of the most complex challenges in energy with speed, creativity and customer obsession. We’re also enabling our global businesses to reach the full capability of what we’ve achieved in the UK, taking the learnings, products and experiences that customers love here and rolling them out worldwide.
At Octopus Tech, you’ll have real ownership, variety, and the chance to shape products that make a tangible difference in people’s lives - lowering bills, enabling greener living, and delivering experiences customers genuinely love. You’ll work side by side with teams across marketing, operations, and data, and see the impact of your work in the real world, fast.
We are looking for Backend Engineers (mid level) to join our Devices team and Low Carbon Tech team.
Devices: Since launching our first piece of hardware, Home Mini, in 2022, followed by Cosy Heat Pumps in 2023 and the Charge EV Charger in 2025, we have continued to expand our portfolio of devices, helping customers make the green energy transition.
You'll join a cross-functional team of backend and mobile engineers, working closely with our hardware team to extend and improve integrations for both existing and new devices in the Octopus Energy app. This includes the recently announced Nook family of home batteries, with more exciting products already in the pipeline. If you want to design and build solutions that scale low-carbon technology in homes across the UK, this is the mission for you.
Low Carbon Tech: Low Carbon Tech are installing EV Chargers, Solar, Batteries and Heat Pumps into homes to drive the energy transition at pace. As customer demand grows, our goal is to ensure scaling up never means slowing down or compromising on a world-class customer journey for low carbon tech.
To make that happen, we are building a new, dedicated engineering and product team to completely re-imagine this process - making it fast, transparent, and predictable for our customers from day one. This will be a small multi-disciplinary team who’ll sit within our much bigger low carbon tech team.
You’ll help design and build the platform architecture, data integrations, and automations that eliminate real world friction. If you want to design and build solutions to scale up electrotech in the nation’s homes, this is the mission for you.
We embrace flat hierarchies and an open, agile culture that fosters innovation, flexibility, and creativity.

Backend Developer (m/w/d) – API & Data Integrations
Unsere operativen Prozesse leben in unserem CRM-System, unsere Daten-Intelligence in Databricks.

Senior Data Platform Engineer
Help us make a big green dent in the universe. We're on a mission to drive the global renewable energy revolution, and we need many more people to help us make our vision a reality.
Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN) is a leader in sourcing, investing in, and managing a wide range of utility-scale renewable energy assets. As we continue to expand our investment base, we are dedicated to building a diverse team that reflects the communities we serve. Currently, we manage a global portfolio of over £8 billion in renewable energy assets.
About the role:
As part of our mission to drive smarter energy decisions, we are building a production-grade, governed platform that empowers our teams to deploy AI-enabled tools, agents, and data products safely and at scale.
Sitting within the Systems and Data / Transformation team, you will turn existing platform architectures, governance specs, and prototype patterns into production-grade infrastructure. You’ll work alongside our Tech and Transformation Lead, data engineers, application builders, and business stakeholders across Finance, Asset Management, and Fund Operations.
This is not a general DevOps or blank-page architecture role. The primary focus is designing and implementing enterprise-grade identity, access, and governance controls across human users, systems, and non-human agents.
Our Tech & Ecosystem: Databricks, Lakebase, Unity Catalog, Entra ID / Azure Identity, Okta, ZScaler, GitHub Actions, MCP patterns, and Terraform.
Mechanical Engineer
Octopus Energy's R&D team in Slough is developing the next generation of heat pump systems and hydraulic products that surround them. We're looking for a hands-on R&D Engineer to join the team on a full time basis to help design, build, test and iterate hardware that works alongside heat pumps.
This is a practical, workshop-floor role as much as a design one. You won't just specify components - you'll be plumbing rigs, commissioning systems, instrumenting test loops and getting real data out of real hardware. We need someone who is equally comfortable with a CAD model, a P&ID and a pipe wrench.
If you like the idea of taking a concept from a sketch to a working prototype on a test rig within weeks, this is the role.
\n-
Design, build and commission hydraulic test rigs and prototype products that integrate with heat pumps (buffer tanks, hot water cylinders, heat exchangers, circulation and modulation hardware, and similar).
-
Carry out hands-on assembly and plumbing of water-side and refrigerant-adjacent systems - pipework, fittings, pumps, valves, sensors and controls.
-
Instrument rigs with temperature, flow and pressure measurement, and run structured test campaigns to characterise both systems and components performance.
-
Diagnose and troubleshoot hydraulic, thermal and mechanical issues on live systems, and feed findings back into the design.
-
Work closely with the wider R&D team to iterate designs quickly, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability and serviceability.
-
Produce clear documentation: test plans, build instructions, results write-ups and design records.
-
Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related discipline).
-
Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in an R&D, product development or test environment.
-
Demonstrable heat pump knowledge - you understand how heat pumps work, their operating envelopes, and how the hydraulic system around them behaves (flow, temperature, ΔT, defrost, modulation, etc.).
-
Strong hands-on experience - this is the most important requirement. You can build, plumb, commission and fault-find systems yourself, not just specify them. Practical plumbing and pipework skills are essential.
-
Experience working with hydraulic systems - pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks, pipework and the behaviour of water-side circuits.
-
Comfortable instrumenting rigs and interpreting test data to draw engineering conclusions.
-
CAD proficiency for designing rig components and prototype parts.
-
Able to work independently and using own initiative on-site in Slough and move quickly in a fast-paced R&D environment.
-
Experience developing products specifically intended to operate with heat pumps (buffer tanks, hot water cylinders, DHW modules, hydraulic interface units, etc.).
-
Familiarity with refrigerant-side systems and relevant safety considerations.
-
Thermal/fluids analysis skills (thermodynamic modelling, or sizing calculations) to support design decisions.
-
Experience in setting up, running, and interpreting FEA (structural/thermal) and CFD analyses on complex systems.
-
Relevant trade or industry qualifications (e.g. plumbing, F-Gas, G3 unvented hot water) - not required but valued.
-
Experience taking products through prototype into early manufacture.
-
A genuinely hands-on R&D role at the leading edge of UK heat pump accessory product development.
-
A well-equipped facility and the freedom to build and test real hardware.
-
A collaborative team that moves fast and values practical engineering judgement.
-
Competitive contract day rate, commensurate with experience.
-
