About This Role:
As the engineering leader for Trust & Safety, you own the systems that keep Strava's community safe and compliant: proactive detection and moderation of harmful content, age assurances, and regulatory reporting. You’ll drive technology strategy for core services and product experiences, often built with AI/ML strategies. You partner closely with Policy, Legal, Product, Design, and Ops, while you own the engineering roadmap, team, and delivery.
We follow a flexible hybrid model that translates to more than half of your time on-site in our San Francisco office, three days per week.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Lead a team of engineers supporting Trust & Safety at Strava and guide their career development and the teams overall evolution.
- Partner with AI/ML to set the technical strategy for how Strava applies LLM-based auto-moderation to detect and act on harmful content at scale
- Identify and drive the capabilities and tech investments that build a durable foundation for trust and safety, including the internal platform other Strava engineering teams integrate with.
- Partner closely with Product, Policy, Legal, Design, and Ops to deliver on Trust & Safety's most critical priorities.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TEAM:

- Have experience partnering with Product and other cross-functional stakeholders to balance short-term deliverables with long-term technology investment
- Have 5+ years of experience in Trust & Safety and 5+ years of management experience, including at least 2 years managing managers.
- Full stack experience with 10+ years of systems engineering experience.
- Up to date on AI technology for engineering and engaged in applying best practices for yourself and your team.

About This Role
The Data Science team at Strava works across the organization to find solutions to the highest-leverage, and often the most challenging, problems facing the business. We use machine learning, causal inference, and measurement systems to synthesize Strava’s unique data assets into models, metrics, and recommendations that our leadership team can act on with confidence.
This is a strategic individual contributor role that will partner closely with our engineering and data teams to deliver improvements to our experimentation platform for product and marketing improvements. The role drives organization-wide through expanding functionality of and visibility into our experiments, and by partnering with cross-functional teams to define processes that enable Strava to deliver the highest quality experiences to our athletes.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Build industry-leading experimentation process and platform for a consumer product serving ~tens of millions of athletes worldwide.
- Partner with engineers, product managers, and marketers to ensure experiments are successfully designed and shipped across product surfaces and marketing channels
- Collaborate closely with our Comms & Experimentation Platform engineers to expand our technical capabilities to expand our capabilities to support experiment designs and methods for serving experiences to athletes
- Serve as a domain expert to aid the data team horizontally in pursuits related to experimentation and inference
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TEAM:
- 5+ years of experience in data science or a related quantitative domain with hands-on experience working on experiments, preferably with back-end knowledge of experimentation systems
- Deep familiarity with methodology and common issues in scaling experimentation— e.g. hypothesis/noninferiority testing, incremental lift estimation, power estimation, program-level holdout experiments, winner’s curse, and interaction effects
- Strong SQL proficiency and comfort writing software for statistical data processing
- Python proficiency, with comfort writing production-quality code for statistical analysis and experiment tooling
- Fluency in metrics and measurement for consumer software products, and comfort in working with cross-functional partners to translate business needs into technical plans and vice versa

ABOUT THIS ROLE
Strava's Product Engineering teams build the features athletes use every day. We're looking for a Staff Engineer who wants to be close to the product — shipping athlete-facing features, turning ambiguous ideas into working systems, and acting as tech lead for a small pod of engineers.
This is a builder's role first. You'll spend your time designing and shipping the technical systems that power user facing products, partnering daily with product managers and designers to take features from 0→1, and setting the technical direction for your pod along the way. You'll move fast, work across the stack when the problem calls for it, and own the quality of what ships.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design, build, and ship the backend systems behind Strava's athlete-facing features, owning them from idea to production.
- Act as tech lead for pods of engineers — scoping work, breaking it down, coordinating delivery, and ensuring we are making the right decisions.
- Partner closely with product managers and designers to take features 0→1, shaping what gets built and how, not just executing a handed-down spec.
- Solve tough technical problems and lead the pod to execute, stepping across the stack into client or adjacent systems when the problem calls for it.
- Move quickly on new product bets while keeping an eye on reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Work across Strava's backend stack — Ruby, Scala, Go, MySQL, Redis, Cassandra, Kafka, and Kubernetes — and pick up adjacent surfaces as needed.
- Mentor engineers on the pod and across the Strava tech team.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE TEAM
- 10+ years of professional backend/server engineering experience, with a track record of shipping consumer products.
- Experience acting as a tech lead — facilitating team processes and driving execution.
- A bias toward building and shipping: you've taken features from 0→1 and care about getting real product into athletes' hands, not just designing systems in the abstract.
- Strong system design skills for distributed systems at scale: making architecture decisions, defending trade-offs, and thinking about how a system evolves over time.
- Proficiency in at least one of Strava's backend languages (Scala, Go, Python) with comfort picking up others, and willingness to work across the stack when needed.
- Experience with distributed systems technologies like Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud infrastructure (AWS).
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases in production (we use MySQL, Redis, and Cassandra).
- Resilience with changes and the ability to navigate ambiguous situations, creating clarity for yourself and others.
- An ability to look around corners and predict the future, making decisions now that set us up for success down the line.
- A genuine interest in working closely with product and design partners and leading a team to prioritize the right work and deliver it well. You're interested in more than just putting your head down on an assigned project.

ABOUT THIS ROLE
Some of the most important problems at Strava don't belong to any one team. They're cross-stack, ambiguous, and high-stakes, and they need someone who can walk in, figure out what's actually going wrong, and drive the fix. This role exists to be that person.
You'll report directly to a Senior Director of Product Engineering and join a small bench of exceptional individual contributors deployed against Strava's riskiest and least-understood technical problems. You'll think across client and server at the same time, move between initiatives as priorities shift, and bridge what's on fire today with what we need to build next. You'll also help drive change in newly integrated parts of the business, including our work with Runna.

We are looking for a Staff AI Engineer to join the GenAI + Discovery Platform team at Strava, a team at the core of Strava's AI strategy, responsible for building the shared tooling that enables product teams to ship high value GenAI-powered features at scale. This role sits at the intersection of AI engineering, platform engineering, and server engineering. You will own the systems that make it easy and reliable for all of our product teams to build user facing features on top LLMs at Strava, from shared context, tool management, agent loops, orchestration, data access, search and retrieval to evaluation and ROI frameworks. This is a high-leverage technical role: you're not just building infrastructure, you're building the core understanding of athletes that enable consistent athlete experiences, insight across product surfaces. You'll work closely with product engineers, product managers and data teams to translate cutting-edge AI capabilities into production-ready platforms that facilitate development of AI features that provide value to our athletes.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Build for a Well Loved Consumer Product: Work at the intersection of AI and fitness to launch and optimize product experiences that will be used by tens of millions of active people worldwide.
- Build the GenAI + Discovery Platform: Set the vision, Design and the shared genAI platform: LLM, and workflow orchestration, prompt management systems, RAG pipelines, search and retrieval services (vector, hybrid and structured search), and evaluation tooling
- Enable Teams to Ship AI Features Faster: Build self-serve interfaces and golden paths so that product and CUJ engineering teams can build GenAI-powered features without deep AI expertise.
- Own End-to-End AI Capability Delivery: Drive projects from architecture and interface design through production deployment and monitoring, ensuring correctness, latency, reliability, and cost-efficiency of the AI capabilities your platform serves.
- Collaborate Across Engineering, and Product: Work closely with engineers and PMs across different verticals to enable the new features and build the genAI roadmap. inform product teams on how to consume and leverage AI capabilities effectively.
- Build from a Rich Dataset: Explore and use Strava's extensive unique fitness and geo datasets from millions of users to inform how AI capabilities can extract actionable insights, improve product decisions, and power novel athlete experiences.
YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL HERE BY:
- Treating AI Platform as a Product: Bringing engineering rigor — versioning, contracts, SLAs, monitoring, and deprecation paths — to AI capabilities and LLM integrations that product teams depend on. You don't ship a prototype; you ship a platform.
- Leading as an Owner: Taking end-to-end accountability for the reliability and impact of the systems you build, including their correctness in production, their adoption by downstream teams, and the business outcomes they enable.
- Building for Leverage: Designing platforms and tooling that multiply the output of the broader team, reducing the AI infrastructure expertise required for CUJ teams to ship GenAI-powered features.
- Collaborating Across Disciplines: Working fluidly with ML engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and product managers to align on model selection, evaluation standards, prompt strategies, and consumption patterns.
- Raising the Standard: Helping establish best practices for GenAI system development, responsible AI patterns, and operational health, and mentoring teammates at all levels to do the same.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE TEAM:
- 5+ years of experience building and operating complex, production AI or backend systems at scale, with a track record of decomposing large technical problems into well-scoped execution across teams.
- Demonstrated experience building AI platform tooling or developer-facing infrastructure ideally for LLM or ML systems with a strong instinct for API design, versioning, and self-serve patterns.
- Hands-on experience building with large language models in production: agentic workflows, prompt and context engineering, RAG architectures, embedding pipelines, fine-tuning workflows, or LLM evaluation frameworks and tools like Langchain .
- Proficiency in search systems (Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Vector Search, etc)
- Proficiency in backend service development on cloud environments (AWS preferred), using Python, Go. Solid understanding of distributed systems and containerized infrastructure (Kubernetes, Docker).
- Strong technical leadership: ability to lead multi-team projects, define technical direction, and grow engineers at multiple levels.
- Deep curiosity about the evolving GenAI landscape: model capabilities, agent frameworks, multimodal systems: and strong judgment on where and how to apply them to real product problems.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align cross-functional partners around technical direction and build organizational trust in the platforms your team ships.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Data Products team at Strava, a team at the core of Strava’ AI strategy, responsible for turning Strava's unique community and activity data into reliable, reusable, enriched datasets powering user experiences at scale. This is a technical management role leading a growing team of Machine Learning Engineers, Data Engineers and Data Scientists. You'll be responsible for hands-on technical contributions, driving execution and setting technical strategy as well as coaching and growth of your team. You’ll balance innovative machine learning models with product impact via iterative development to translate durable, high-quality capabilities into athlete experiences at scale across our many product verticals.
We follow a flexible hybrid model that translates to more than half your time on-site in our San Francisco office — three days per week.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Build for a Well Loved Consumer Product: Work at the intersection of fitness and geospatial to launch and optimize product experiences that will be used by tens of millions of active people worldwide. Contribute hands on to the solutions we deliver in product.
- Lead a High-Impact Data + ML Team: Manage, mentor, and grow a team of machine learning engineers, data engineers and data scientists to deliver ML and data -powered experiences to users while fostering a collaborative culture across experience levels
- Own End-to-End Data Products Strategy and Execution: Drive the roadmap for Data Products (both the models, datasets and systems) owning from initial model prototyping to production deployment, scaling, and optimization
- Drive Innovation in ML for Fitness: Guide your team in designing and developing novel models algorithms and dataset for unique fitness, routing and athlete insights
- Building cross-functional partnerships: Develop strong relationships and effectively communicate with many cross-functional partners in product and engineering to identify highest leverage opportunities across product verticals
- Championing team culture: Be passionate about developing your people and contributing positively to Strava's inclusive and collaborative culture, fostering an environment where your team can do their best work
- Build from a rich dataset: Unlock your curiosity and explore Strava’s extensive unique fitness and geo datasets from millions of users to extract actionable insights, inform product decisions, and optimize existing features
YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL HERE BY:
- Treating Data Products as Products: Bringing engineering rigor versioning, contracts, SLAs, monitoring, and deprecation paths to data artifacts and ML insights that product teams depend on. You don't ship a pipeline; you ship a capability.
- Leading as an Owner: Taking end-to-end accountability for the reliability and impact of the systems you build, including their correctness in production, their adoption by downstream teams, and the business outcomes they enable.
- Building for Leverage: Designing platforms and tooling that multiply the output of the broader team reducing the ML and data engineering expertise required for CUJ teams to ship features on top of data products.
- Collaborating Across Disciplines: Working fluidly with ML engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and product managers to align on artifact semantics, evaluation standards, and consumption patterns.
- Raising the Standard: Helping establish best practices for data product development, access patterns, and operational health and mentoring teammates at all levels to do the same.
- Being passionate about the work you are doing and contributing positively to Strava's inclusive and collaborative team culture and values.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TEAM:
- 2 years of experience managing an AI/ML engineering team, with a proven track record of growing engineers and delivering complex technical projects.
- Demonstrated track record of solving complex, ambiguous machine learning problems and broken them down into strategies and tactical execution for teams.
- Technical experience building, shipping, and supporting complex ML models in production at scale
- Experience building and maintaining production data pipelines and batch/stream workflows using technologies like Spark, Kafka, Snowflake, or similar.
- Hands on coding for model development and serving in backend service development on cloud environments (AWS preferred), using Python.
- Interested in production ML model operational excellence and best practices,including scalable ML architecture, serving optimization and dataset versioning.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and align stakeholders across multiple engineering and product teams.

We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join the growing AI and Machine Learning team at Strava. This team is responsible for sophisticated machine learning models and systems which provide value to Strava athletes including personalization, recommendations, search, and trust and safety. The team also maintains the ML platform and infrastructure that enables our team to iterate on models quickly and deploy them reliably at scale.
This is an important role in the ML team and across Product teams designing, roadmapping, and implementing innovative machine learning algorithms. We value full stack ML engineers who are able to work on all parts of an ML pipeline from model building, evaluation, optimizing performance, and ensuring the scalability and reliability of these production models. We also seek those who can improve the systems and tools behind the ML pipeline to further empower the team.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TEAM:
- Have worked on numerous machine learning problems and broken them down into incremental tasks.
- Have demonstrated solid interpersonal and communication skills, and collaborative approach to drive business impact across teams.
- Have experience building, shipping, and supporting ML models in production at scale.
- Have experience with exploratory data analysis and model prototyping, using languages such as Python or R and tools like Scikit learn, Pandas, Numpy, Pytorch, Tensorflow, and Sagemaker.
- Have built and worked on data pipelines using large scale data technologies (like Spark, Hadoop, EMR, SQL, and Snowflake).
