THUMBTACK HELPS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE CONFIDENTLY CARE FOR THEIR HOMES.
Thumbtack is the one app you need to take care of and improve your home — from personalized guidance to AI tools and a best-in-class hiring experience. Every day in every county of the U.S., people turn to Thumbtack to complete urgent repairs, seasonal maintenance and bigger improvements. We help homeowners know which projects to do, when to do them and who to hire from our growing community of 300,000 local service businesses. If making an impact inspires you, join us. Imagine what we’ll build together.
ABOUT THE DATA ENGINEERING TEAM
Thumbtack’s Data Engineering org is split into 3 groups: Core Data Engineering, Data Platform and Embedded Data Engineering. This role is on the Embedded Data Engineering team, which breaks down into multiple business units that data engineers are embedded into. This role would be on the commercial operations side of the house and will work closely with engineers, analysts, data scientists and machine learning engineers to help design and curate data sets originating from internal and third-party sources to meet current and future needs. Over the next year, it will continue to build on its prior successes in building a more cohesive data warehouse while starting to work more deeply upstream to build data best practices into the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).
THE CHALLENGE
There are several teams all over Thumbtack with Terabytes of data and unique challenges trying to clean and organize this data to measure their performance. In this role, you will work with Engineers, Data Scientists, Managers, and others to understand their needs, and actively work to build datasets to tackle these challenges.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Collaboratively refine and evangelize a comprehensive framework for integrating data-thinking into the software development lifecycle for product teams.
- Design, architect, and maintain core operations datasets, data marts, and feature stores that support a blend of mature products and features with a rapidly evolving product line, in partnership with analytics, data science, and machine learning.
- Integrate deeply with our cross functional partners to understand their data needs, and help design datasets with the same engineering rigor as any other software we design.
- Drive data quality and best practices across different business areas.
- Help build the next generation data products at Thumbtack, leveraging AI models for code generation and incorporating agents into our workflows.
IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST BRING
- 4+ years of experience designing and building data sets and warehouses.
- Excellent ability to understand the needs of and collaborate with stakeholders in other functions, especially Analytics, and identify opportunities for process improvements across teams.
- Expertise in SQL for analytics/reporting/business intelligence and also for building SQL- and Python-based transforms inside an ETL pipeline, or similar.
- Experience designing, architecting, and maintaining a data warehouse and data marts that seamlessly stitches together data from production databases, clickstream data, and external APIs to serve multiple stakeholders.
- Expertise building the above with a modern data stack based on a cloud-native data warehouse, in our case we use BigQuery, dbt, and Apache Airflow, but a similar stack is fine.
- Experience using AI to generate design plans, code and documentation as well as applying AI-enabled workflows to accelerate development velocity and improve data engineering practices.
- Strong sense of ownership and pride in your work, from ideation and requirements-gathering to project completion and maintenance.

ABOUT THE PRO FEEDBACK AND TARGETING TEAM
At Thumbtack, the Pro Feedback and Targeting team is focused on 0->1 work that reinvents the way pro is matched with jobs. This involves moving away from a rigid and static set of questions to understand pro preferences, which often limits innovation and product changes. Our goal is to revamp this to a new, more flexible experience by building systems that leverage AI/LLMs to gain a deeper understanding of the types of jobs pros want and can do. This new system will learn and improve as pros use it, rather than remaining static, ultimately helping pros secure more and better jobs.
We've built conviction through research, experiments, and market-based tests that doing this successfully would be a big unlock for Thumbtack. We are starting to pilot this with a small group of pros. Joining this team now means you are joining an area that already has high conviction and momentum behind, but still has plenty of opportunity to be involved in driving the strategy and making large product changes. Successfully achieving this will not only strengthen Thumbtack's partnership with our pros but also unlock greater impact on the marketplace side and enhance the overall customer experience.
THE CHALLENGE
The primary challenge for an Engineering Manager (EM) within the New Hiring Experience org that the Pro Feedback and Targeting team is part of is to help homeowners across the U.S. search for and hire the most relevant home service professionals—and ultimately get their jobs done. We address this by tackling complex problems at the intersection of engineering, data science, and applied science.
We help homeowners start more projects on Thumbtack by enabling them to express their needs in everyday, conversational language through our search bar. This involves solving underlying challenges around query comprehension and problem scoping. As customers define their project, we help them share their preferences and availability to better match them with the most relevant professionals. We then support them in comparing and selecting the right pros for their job.

ABOUT THE BUSINESS APPLICATIONS ORG
The Business Applications org builds and operates the internal systems that help Thumbtack run effectively at scale: Salesforce-centered workflows, admin tooling, and integrations that connect teams across the company. We are expanding that foundation into a broader internal platform for business workflows, with shared APIs, reusable integration patterns, and safe, auditable capabilities for business-critical actions. The org works closely with engineering and business partners to turn complex internal needs into systems that are easier to operate, extend, and automate responsibly.
THE CHALLENGE
Thumbtack's internal systems are becoming more connected, more automated, and more central to how teams serve customers, pros, and the business. Business Applications is helping drive that shift by turning Salesforce-centered workflows and operational tools into a broader internal platform for AI-enabled work. The challenge for this engineer is to build the backend services, APIs, and integration patterns that let agents and business systems take safe, auditable action across Thumbtack's internal ecosystem. This work will shape how teams move from one-off operational workflows to production capabilities that can be reused, extended, and trusted by the business.

ABOUT THE CYBERSECURITY TEAM
The Security Engineering team at Thumbtack is focused on enabling innovation at scale by making the secure path the easiest path. We believe strong security is not a blocker to velocity, but a force multiplier when it is designed into systems, platforms, and developer workflows from the start.
We partner closely with teams across the organization to shape system design, guide architectural decisions, and evolve Thumbtack’s security posture as the company scales. Through collaboration, automation, and thoughtful tradeoffs, we help ensure Thumbtack can ship fast, innovate boldly, and maintain customer trust.
THE CHALLENGE
AI is reshaping how work gets done at Thumbtack. Employees leverage AI assistants in their daily work and teams are building autonomous agents that act on their behalf - reading data, calling APIs, and making changes across enterprise systems. This introduces changes in the risk landscape. Identities now belong to agents and services as often as to people. Protocols like MCP are opening new pathways between AI and enterprise data. And the pipelines feeding AI systems cross more services, vendors, and trust boundaries than they have previously.
The challenge is to evolve security controls to address these shifts in the technology and risk landscape driven by AI-adoption: hardening IAM for non-human and delegated identities, defining safe defaults for MCP servers and autonomous agents, and securing the data pipelines that feed AI systems. We package these controls as secure defaults, paved paths, and reusable patterns so teams can adopt them with confidence. The goal is straightforward — keep Thumbtack moving fast on AI while keeping customer and employee data protected.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- This role focuses on improving AI-adjacent security at Thumbtack, including the agents, identities, integrations, and data pipelines that modern AI systems depend on. It also covers broader security engineering work across the enterprise platforms and services that support them.
- Deliver high-quality security assessments and threat models for first-party and third-party AI tools, agents, and AI-integrated systems, ensuring they adhere to enterprise security principles and approved patterns, with sound authentication, authorization, data access, and observability by design.
- Design and validate technical guardrails and reusable patterns that keep AI usage safe at Thumbtack. This spans AI behavior (safe defaults for agent actions, tool and permission scoping, human-in-the-loop boundaries for sensitive access, input and output controls, audit and observability) and AI connectivity (MCP servers, integrations, trust boundaries, and the data pipelines that feed first- and third-party AI systems). Contribute to the frameworks and tooling that support secure AI development and use across Thumbtack.
- Harden IAM across the enterprise, with particular focus on the non-human and delegated identities behind AI systems (service accounts, agent credentials, SaaS-to-SaaS OAuth, and SCIM federation). Bring least-privilege and lifecycle hygiene to identities that increasingly act at machine speed.
- Provide broader security engineering support across Thumbtack's enterprise platforms and services, including SaaS security and posture management, third-party and integration security, data governance, endpoint security, and identity-centric controls. Build paved paths, shared tooling, and automation that scale these controls.
- Lead cross-functional security initiatives end-to-end. Partner with IT, Engineering, Legal, Privacy, Procurement, and business stakeholders to surface risk early, set clear requirements, and support scalable adoption of secure patterns. Conduct security design and architecture reviews for enterprise applications, SaaS platforms, and internally developed systems.
- Mentor engineers and partner-team members, raising the overall security bar through guidance and example.
- Support security incident response and drive learning through post-incident analysis.
IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST BRING
- 6+ years of experience in security engineering, enterprise security, application security, cloud security, or a related field.
- Experience developing threat models and proposing technical guardrails for AI tooling and agentic systems, including non-human identities, tool/permission scoping, and safe defaults for agent behavior.
- Deep expertise in modern enterprise security disciplines: authentication and authorization (SSO, OAuth/OIDC, SAML, federation, SCIM), API security and token handling, secrets management, least-privilege design, SaaS security and posture management.
- Strong experience evaluating risk and conducting security design and architecture reviews across enterprise applications, SaaS platforms, integrations, and internally developed systems, including evaluating data flows, third-party integrations, trust boundaries, automation platforms, AI-connected workflows, and emerging integration patterns such as MCP.
- Strong experience securing modern, cloud-native systems (AWS and/or GCP) and familiarity with core control domains such as audit logging, encryption, access control, data retention, and incident response.
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability, balancing hands-on technical execution with the ability to mentor others, raise standards, and drive measurable improvements in enterprise security.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence without authority and translate technical risk into clear requirements and actionable guidance for both technical and non-technical audiences.

ABOUT THE DEVELOPER EXPERIENCE TEAM
The Developer Experience (DevEx) team makes Thumbtack's ~250 engineers more productive. We own the AI-powered developer workflows, cloud development environments, and internal developer platform the whole engineering org builds on. We're small and senior: a four-person team in Productivity Engineering, alongside Mobile Infra, Frontend Infrastructure, and Design Systems Engineering. We partner closely with engineers across the company to find their pain points and ship solutions. You can read more about our engineering culture on the Thumbtack Engineering Blog https://medium.com/thumbtack-engineering.
THE CHALLENGE
We're building the infrastructure for an AI-native engineering organization, and every stream here is active work today: agentic developer tools like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, backed by a library of skills that encode Thumbtack-specific knowledge; a catalog of Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers that make our internal tools AI-accessible; and cloud development environments (CDEs) built for humans and agents alike. Alongside these, we're modernizing the Web and CLI tooling layers engineers reach for every day. A single improvement we ship can move dozens of teams forward.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Build the platforms behind agentic developer workflows: roll out the tools the org builds on (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) and ship the skills, plugins, and MCP servers that run across them.
- Design and build the product surfaces engineers and AI agents reach for daily: self-service workflows in our Backstage developer portal, our developer CLI, IDE integrations, and the framework engineers use to build and deploy their own agents.
- Own and evolve our Cloud Development Environment (CDE) platform for both human developers and AI agents.
- Improve the build systems, CI/CD pipelines, test infrastructure, and observability the whole org depends on.
- Prototype and evaluate new AI developer tools as they land, and decide what to adopt, configure, and scale across the engineering org.
IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST BRING
- Demonstrated experience building developer infrastructure, DevEx, or platform tools that other engineers depend on, from CDE rollouts and internal CLIs to MCP servers and build/CI at 100+ engineer scale.
- Strong systems thinking: you reason about build pipelines, CI/CD, dev environments, and test infrastructure as interconnected systems, not isolated tools.
- A UX mindset applied to engineering systems: you think in personas, journeys, and end-to-end workflows, and design for the people and agents who use what you build.
