This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Senior System Safety Engineer to join Ursa Major, a leading aerospace company focused on cutting-edge propulsion systems. As a Senior System Safety Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our rocket engines and propulsion systems meet stringent safety and reliability standards.
Your responsibilities will include:
Analyzing engineering hardware, mechanical and electrical schematics for fault tolerance, latent hazards, and compliance with safety requirements.
Maintaining and evolving Ursa Explosive Safety Management Program (ESMP)
Reviewing system test procedures, operational protocols, and maintenance procedures to ensure the implementation of appropriate safety controls.
Collaborating across all engineering teams to mitigate hazards and ensure safety measures are embedded throughout the product lifecycle.
Coordinating with program management and external regulatory bodies from program initiation through production, operations, and decommissioning.
Oversee Ursa Major Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Training program
Coordinating explosives training program in accordance with Federal, State, Local and Ursa Major specific requirements
Additional Key Responsibilities:
Conduct System Safety Program or Design safety assessments.
Lead safety initiatives for large-scale propulsion system safety programs or multiple mid-sized safety projects.
Monitor the technical execution of safety requirements throughout the program.
Act as a key interface with stakeholders including customers, regulatory authorities, subcontractors, and vendors.
Prepare and present Safety Assessment Reports and Program Safety Briefs for both internal and external review.
Lead safety discussions in technical reviews, ensuring alignment with the approval process.
Participate and contribute to Safety Review Board
Interpret and implement system requirements based on customer specifications and aerospace industry safety standards.
Generate reports that document various safety analyses and system safety program findings.
Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure a comprehensive understanding of product architecture, system integration, and design.
Maintain ATF and CDLE company, individual and magazine permits and licenses
Qualifications You Must Have:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant Systems Engineering or Safety Engineering experience. A Master’s or advanced degree may reduce the years of required experience.
Experience: Prior experience in System Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Explosive Safety, Software/Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other Safety Engineering disciplines.
Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. government-issued security clearance.
This is an on-site position splitting time between our facilities in Berthoud, Colorado and Galeton, Colorado.
This role will occasionally require supporting an overnight shift (about once per quarter, on average).
Qualifications We Prefer:
Experience in propulsion systems, aerospace systems, or other high-performance engineering systems.
Knowledge of aerospace safety programs and experience with standards from organizations such as NASA, FAA, or DoD.
Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with a proven ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Demonstrated leadership in managing safety programs and directing teams of safety professionals.
Experience with project management tools like Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and familiarity with proposal development processes.
Master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).

Your responsibilities will include:

Coordinating obtaining explosives shipping approval through the DoD (IHC/FHC) and DOT (EX authorization)
Additional Key Responsibilities:

Lead safety initiatives for large-scale propulsion system safety programs or multiple mid-sized safety projects.

Role Overview
Ursa Major is seeking a Chief Engineer, Hypersonic Missile & Interceptor to serve as the technical authority and architectural owner for the Draper Engine Hypersonic program. This individual will be accountable for the end-to-end vehicle technical baseline, ensuring the successful integration of propulsion, structures, avionics, GNC, thermal, and mission systems into a flight-worthy, scalable vehicle solution.
As Chief Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across the full lifecycle—from requirements definition and trade studies through design, integration, test, and flight operations—while partnering closely with Program Management, Manufacturing, Mission Assurance, and Business Development. This role is critical to delivering reliable, high-performance systems to government and commercial customers on aggressive schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Authority & Architecture
Own and maintain the vehicle system architecture, technical baseline, and configuration for the Draper Engine Vehicle.
Serve as the final technical decision authority for vehicle-level design trades, requirements allocation, and risk acceptance.
Ensure propulsion (Draper engine) is fully integrated into the vehicle system with appropriate margins, interfaces, and operational envelopes.
Systems Engineering & Integration
Lead vehicle-level systems engineering, including requirements flow-down, interface control, verification & validation (V&V), and configuration management.
Oversee cross-disciplinary integration across:
Propulsion
Structures & airframe
GNC
Avionics & software
Thermal & TPS
Mission & flight systems
Chair technical reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and FRR.
Program Execution Support
Partner with Program Management to balance performance, cost, schedule, and risk.
Support proposal efforts, customer technical interchange meetings (TIMs), and design reviews with government and commercial customers.
Identify technical risks early and lead mitigation plans through test, analysis, or design iteration.
Test, Qualification & Flight Readiness
Define and approve vehicle-level test strategies including ground testing, qualification, and flight test.
Ensure data-driven decisions using analysis, modeling, and test results.
Provide technical sign-off for vehicle readiness and flight authorization.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to subsystem leads and senior engineers.
Foster a culture of engineering rigor, accountability, and rapid execution.
Help scale engineering processes and standards as programs mature.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (Master’s or PhD strongly preferred).
12+ years of experience in aerospace vehicle development, including system-level ownership.
Prior experience serving as a Chief Engineer, Lead Systems Engineer, or Vehicle Architect on a flight vehicle or missile system.
Deep understanding of propulsion integration, vehicle dynamics, and system trades.
Demonstrated experience leading vehicles through design reviews, test campaigns, and flight readiness.
Ability to clearly communicate complex technical decisions to executive leadership and customers.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and stay flexible based on customer demands and company priorities along with daily firefighting
Ability to make sound technical decisions under schedule and performance pressure
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
Experience with hypersonic vehicles, missiles, launch vehicles, or advanced propulsion systems.
Familiarity with thermal, structural, and aero integration challenges in hypersonic regimes
Experience in design and analysis of fluids systems
Experience operating in ISO 9001 or AS9100 certified organizations
Experience with SMC-S-016 Test Requirements
Background working with DoD, DARPA, or classified programs.
Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools.
Experience scaling a vehicle program from prototype to production.
Active or ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.

Mission-critical avionics require dedicated technical ownership throughout production to ensure reliable delivery, sustained performance, and continuous improvement. As an Avionics Product Engineer, you will serve as the technical owner for an avionics product as it transitions from development into production, becoming the subject matter expert responsible for successful hardware delivery, production support, and product lifecycle execution.
In this role, you will develop expert-level knowledge of the product’s electrical design, architecture, manufacturing processes, and test methodologies to support production, troubleshoot technical issues, certify production hardware through Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP), and coordinate cross-functional efforts to meet customer commitments and internal development milestones. Working closely with Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Program Management, and external vendors, you will drive execution across the organization to ensure production hardware is delivered on schedule while maintaining the highest standards of quality and technical performance.
The ideal candidate enjoys owning a complex hardware product from a technical and execution perspective. They are equally comfortable diving into electrical schematics to troubleshoot a technical issue, leading cross-functional discussions to resolve production challenges, and representing the product in customer, program, and business development meetings.
Responsibilities:
Own the overall technical success and execution of an assigned avionics product throughout production.
Develop and maintain expert-level understanding of the electrical design, architecture, manufacturing processes, and test methodologies.
Troubleshoot technical issues across production, test, integration, and fielded hardware, engaging subject matter experts when appropriate.
Own production schedules and drive execution to meet customer contract commitments, internal milestones, and R&D deliverables.
Coordinate activities across engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and program management to ensure successful hardware deliveries, acting as the primary technical point of contact.
Support active programs, customer meetings, and technical discussions as the product representative.
Complete Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP), review results, certify production hardware, and ensure compliance with product requirements.
Review and disposition technical documentation including ATPs, discrepancy reports, vendor test reports, and manufacturing data packages.
Lead first-line technical evaluation of circuit boards, assemblies, harnesses, and other supplied hardware, coordinating with SMEs as needed.
Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability, production yield, quality, cost, and lead times through engineering and process improvements.
Maintain configuration awareness and ensure technical documentation remains current throughout the product lifecycle.
Support root cause investigations and corrective actions for production and customer issues.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related engineering discipline.
5+ years of engineering experience developing, testing, or supporting electronic hardware.
Experience with avionics, aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated electronic systems.
Strong understanding of electrical hardware design and troubleshooting techniques.
Experience supporting products through manufacturing, integration, qualification, or production.
Experience interpreting electrical schematics, drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
Experience with hardware verification, acceptance testing, and production test processes.
Ability to coordinate cross-functional teams and drive execution across multiple organizations.
Strong project planning, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to balance technical decision-making with schedule and business priorities.
Desirable Experience:
Experience owning a product throughout its production lifecycle.
Experience with PCB assemblies, cable/harness assemblies, and electronic manufacturing processes.
Familiarity with aerospace quality standards and production documentation.
Experience reviewing discrepancy reports, non-conformances, and root cause investigations.
Experience working directly with contract manufacturers and external vendors.
Familiarity with configuration management and change control processes.
Experience improving manufacturing yield, reducing cost, or shortening production lead times.
Experience supporting customer technical meetings and program reviews.
Familiarity with environmental, vibration, EMI/EMC, and qualification testing.
Experience with ERP/MRP systems and production planning.
Experience in a fast-paced aerospace startup or high-growth manufacturing environment.
Active U.S. Department of Defense Security Clearance or the ability to obtain one.
