ABOUT CARTESIA
Our mission is to architect AI that learns from and interacts with the world like humans do.
We're pioneering the model architectures that will make this possible. Our founding team met as PhDs at the Stanford AI Lab, where we invented State Space Models or SSMs, a new primitive for training efficient, large-scale foundation models. Our team combines deep expertise in model innovation and systems engineering paired with a design-minded product engineering team to build and ship cutting edge models and experiences.
We're funded by leading investors at Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, along with Factory, Conviction, A Star, General Catalyst, SV Angel, Databricks and others. We're fortunate to have the support of many amazing advisors, and 90+ angels across many industries, including the world's foremost experts in AI.
ABOUT THE ROLE
On the Audio Post-Training team, you’ll be building and improving the capabilities that define how the rest of the world interacts with our generative audio models. This team is where customer needs meet research, and covers the full spectrum of modeling from ideation through productionization. On any given day, you might design evaluations to reliably measure new capabilities, build processing pipelines to improve data quality, experiment with finetuning and reinforcement learning approaches to refine model behavior, and more.
This role is broad, and cross functional. Members of this team should combine broad research experience with a deep care about building to solve for customer needs and a strong sense of end-to-end ownership. You should be excited to synthesize customer complaints into a holistic understanding of capability gaps, to drive research efforts across data, model training, and evaluation to close those gaps, and to communicate those improvements to product and customer stakeholders. Ultimately, you will be responsible for creating the model experience that the rest of the world sees.
YOUR IMPACT
- Collaborate with product teams to understand and prioritize customer asks
- Cut through the ambiguity of vaguely described behavioral problems to make concrete research plans.
- Ideate and experiment across the full modeling stack, including data processing, synthetic data, SFT, RL, and evals to solve for high priority model capabilities
- Root cause failures in production models and understand how to fix them in future model iterations
- Decide which features and capabilities are ready for public launch
WHAT YOU BRING
- Strong fundamentals in software engineering, machine learning, debugging complex systems, and the ability + desire to learn quickly.
- Experience building and ensuring quality of large multilingual datasets.
- Experience training and debugging generative models (speech, text, or multimodal), especially SFT, RL, synthetic data, and evaluation (both human and automated).
- Excitement about solving problems grounded in real customer needs, not just benchmarks.
- Bonus points if you have native proficiency in other languages!
Note: Cartesia participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information to confirm employment eligibility after hire.

About the Role
The New Horizons Evaluations team is reimagining how we measure progress in interactive machine intelligence. As Evaluations Lead, you will design evaluation frameworks that capture not just what models know — but how they reason, remember, and interact over time. You’ll work at the intersection of research, product, and infrastructure to develop metrics, systems, and studies that define what “intelligence” means in the next generation of AI. This role is ideal for someone who combines scientific rigor with technical execution, and who’s deeply curious about how people use — and want to use — intelligent systems. Your work will shape how Cartesia builds and evaluates frontier models, ensuring that progress isn’t measured solely by static benchmarks, but by deeper qualities like understanding, naturalness, and adaptability in real-world interaction.
Your Impact
Identify and define key model capabilities and behaviors that matter for next-generation model evals
Develop and implement new evaluation pipelines with robust statistical analysis and clear reporting
Partner closely with model training and research teams to embed evaluation systems directly into model development loops
Prototype new user studies and behavioral experiments to ground evaluations in real-world use.
What You Bring
Experience designing or implementing evaluation frameworks for generative models (audio, text, or multimodal)
Strong technical and analytical skills, ability to take open-ended research ideas and translate them into production-ready systems
Creativity in defining novel quantitative metrics for subjective or behavioral qualities
Excitement for building evaluation systems that bridge research and real-world use
Curiosity and rigor in equal measure; motivation driven by discovering how to measure meaningful progress in intelligent behavior
Nice-To-Haves
Understanding of model alignment concepts and evaluation approaches

As a Researcher on the Post-Training team, you’ll work at the intersection of machine learning research, alignment, and infrastructure, designing new techniques for preference optimization, model evaluation, and feedback-driven learning. You’ll explore how feedback signals can guide models to reason more effectively across modalities, and you’ll build the infrastructure to measure and improve these behaviors at scale.
Your work will directly shape how Cartesia’s foundation models learn, improve, and ultimately connect with people.
YOUR IMPACT
- Own research initiatives to improve the alignment and capabilities of multimodal models
- Develop new post-training methods and evaluation frameworks to measure model improvement
- Partner closely with research, product, and platform teams to define best practices for creating specialized models
- Implement, debug, and scale experimental systems to ensure reliability and reproducibility across training runs
- Translate research findings into production-ready systems that enhance model reasoning, consistency, and human alignment
WHAT YOU BRING
- Deep knowledge of preference optimization and alignment methods, including RLHF and related approaches
- Experience designing evaluations and metrics for generative or multimodal models
- Strong engineering and debugging skills, with experience building or scaling complex ML systems
- Ability to trace and diagnose complex behaviors in model performance across the training and evaluation pipeline
NICE-TO-HAVES
- Experience with multimodal model training (e.g., text, audio, or vision-language models)
- Contributions to alignment research or open-source projects related to model evaluation or fine-tuning
- Background in designing or implementing human-in-the-loop evaluation systems
Note: Cartesia participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information to confirm employment eligibility after hire.
