Team & Role Overview:
We are looking for an expert in risk and resilience of the built environment. Our Science teams build world class hazard models across several perils, and this person will work with them to build world class loss models of the risk for a variety of asset types. The loss models will represent structure damages and associated downtime from exposure to natural hazards like flood, wildfire, and wind, enabling our customers to connect physical risk to financial risk. The Risk & Resilience Modeler will have a background in a combination of engineering, materials science, resilience, cost estimation, and data science. A successful candidate will demonstrate the capability to solve technical challenges in data poor areas.
What you’ll do:
- Connect climate and financial risk by developing custom loss models representing impacts to structures and infrastructure assets globally to pair with First Street’s hazard models
- Create models of structure damage, repair time, and indirect impacts using a combination of approaches including first principles of engineering, cost estimation, statistics, and machine learning.
- Analyze historical loss observational data to improve model accuracy, identify quality control issues, and develop suggested remedies for identified issues.
- Perform statistical analysis to validate loss model predictions and assess model uncertainties.
- Conduct background research and using insights from the current state of academic literature to inform approaches in quantitative modeling.
- Analyze building codes and exposure datasets to identify common construction practices globally to inform loss model section
- Create property level adaptation scenarios that enable customers to understand the return on investment of personal property protections
What you’ll need:
- Ph.D. (preferred) or Master’s degree with 3 years experience in structural engineering, civil engineering, operation research, or a related field.
- Strong background in vulnerability developments, statistics, and/or quantitative analytics
- Hands-on experience in developing risk models for buildings or infrastructure systems using machine-learning models or statistical methods
- Experience working with multi-hazard data, catastrophe models, building level damage data, and construction cost estimation data
- Expertise using scripted languages like Python
- Expertise in a science-based approach with a high degree of concern for reliability, accuracy and reproducibility
What will make you stand out:
- Experience in developing scalable and generalized catastrophe risk models
- Strong publication record
- Proficiency with source control platforms such as Git
- Research experience in the latest resilience modeling, technical guidelines, etc.
- ML/AI experience
- Expertise with big data analysis in high performance compute environments, either on premises or on cloud platforms including AWS, GCP, and/or Azure
- Hands on experience in building loss models from scratch
Our anticipated US base salary compensation range for this role is $90,000-$125,000 plus competitive benefits package, which includes bonus, 401(k) with company match, paid time off, paid parental leave, and comprehensive health benefits. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as work location as well as additional factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills, experience, competencies, and relevant education. Team & Role Overview
The engineering team at First Street is the backbone of our mission: using technology and data to help the world understand and adapt to climate risk. We’re an AI-native team building the systems that power our global products—tools relied on by customers to make informed, climate-aware decisions.
As a Software Engineering Manager, you will primarily be a hands-on individual contributor responsible for architecting and delivering end-to-end features across frontend and backend systems, while also providing technical leadership and management for a small team of engineers. You will spend the majority of your time on software execution, working closely with product managers, designers, and data partners to translate complex climate data into performant, accessible, and intuitive user experiences.
This role is ideal for an engineer with strong frontend fundamentals who is comfortable working across the stack and collaborating deeply with cross-functional partners.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as a lead individual contributor, personally building and shipping critical product features across the frontend and backend.
- Develop user-facing experiences with attention to UI architecture, performance, and accessibility.
- Integrate frontend applications with backend APIs and services (primarily written in Go).
- Collaborate closely with product managers and designers, actively contributing ideas, tradeoffs, and technical perspectives.
- Debug and reason about issues across the stack, including identifying whether problems originate in the frontend, backend, or underlying data.
- Work with platform engineers and data partners to ensure product behavior aligns with real-world data and customer expectations.
- Drive high standards for code quality, documentation, and engineering excellence through direct technical contribution and mentorship.

- Professional experience working as a software engineer on production systems.
- Strong frontend fundamentals, including UI architecture, performance optimization, and accessibility.
- Experience building and integrating with APIs.
- Comfort working across the stack, even if your background leans frontend or backend.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners such as product managers and designers.
- Ability to debug complex systems and reason about issues across frontend, backend, and data layers.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

Team & Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be someone who deeply cares about the environment, loves information technology, and appreciates the importance of data for the success of the First Street mission. They will assist in the ingestion of climate risk and ancillary data from First Street modelers and data partners, develop data pipelines, query geospatial databases, calculate applicable statistics, implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes, utilize geographical imagery, and ensure that databases and pipelines coordinate and synchronize with APIs, and web services. This individual’s expertise and leadership will enable all members of the Data Operations team to be successful in their roles.
What you’ll do:
- Provide technical support in the processing, analysis, and interpretation of geospatial observations and modeling data.
- Develop and implement processes for processing large volumes of hazard prediction data to improve risk assessment quality and accuracy.
- Plan, execute and workflows on local and cloud-based environments, using technologies such as GDAL, PostgreSQL, Python, Spark
- Analyze raster and vector data at scale to improve model accuracy, identify quality control issues, and develop suggested remedies for identified issues.
- Perform statistical analysis to validate hazard model predictions and assess model uncertainties.
- Design and implement quality assurance checks on the climate risk data and derived statistics
- Assist in resolution of customer support issues through quality control checks and explanation of the models and risk statistics
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor's Degree in Data or Climate Science, or a related field
- 5+ years of professional experience
- Data operations: Experience with the design and use of databases, such as PostgreSQL
- Programming: Proficiency with SQL queries to efficiently and reproducibly analyze complex datasets preferred. Additional languages like Python also required.
- GIS knowledge: Experience with writing software to efficiently process and analyze with geospatial data using open source tools
- Strong understanding of probability and statistics as applied to spatial data
- Expertise using scripted languages to build data pipelines on both local and cloud-based systems
- Proficiency with source control platforms such as Git
- A science-based approach with a high degree of concern for reliability, accuracy and reproducibility
- Experience in GIS and/or geospatial statistical analysis
- Nice to have: experience in DBT and Spark
