About Formation Bio
Formation Bio is a tech and AI driven pharma company differentiated by radically more efficient drug development.
Advancements in AI and drug discovery are creating more candidate drugs than the industry can progress because of the high cost and time of clinical trials. Recognizing that this development bottleneck may ultimately limit the number of new medicines that can reach patients, Formation Bio, founded in 2016 as TrialSpark Inc., has built technology platforms, processes, and capabilities to accelerate all aspects of drug development and clinical trials. Formation Bio partners, acquires, or in-licenses drugs from pharma companies, research organizations, and biotechs to develop programs past clinical proof of concept and beyond, ultimately helping to bring new medicines to patients. The company is backed by investors across pharma and tech, including a16z, Sequoia, Sanofi, Thrive Capital, John Doerr, Spark Capital, SV Angel Growth, and others.

Our Current Drug Portfolio
Our Technology & Platform
At Formation Bio, our values are the driving force behind our mission to revolutionize the pharma industry. Every team and individual at the company shares these same values, and every team and individual plays a key part in our mission to bring new treatments to patients faster and more efficiently.
About the Position
Formation Bio is looking for a Director, People to drive operational excellence, lead strategic people programs, and partner with leaders to solve complex organizational challenges.
Reporting to the SVP, Head of People, you'll have broad ownership across the People Team, translating business priorities into scalable programs, processes, and decisions that help the company grow. This is a high-impact role for someone who is comfortable thinking strategically, diving into the details, and operating with a high degree of autonomy.
Our People Team operates as business-first partners, setting a high bar for talent, culture, and execution while embracing AI and technology to rethink how People Teams create value. We're looking for someone who shares that mindset, is energized by challenging conventional approaches, and wants to help build an AI-native People Team that supports Formation's mission and culture.
Responsibilities
This role is responsible for three areas that are critical to the success of our People Team and the broader business. The majority of your time will be spent in the first two pillars, where you'll drive strategy, execution, and continuous improvement across our People Team.
People Operations Excellence
Drive AI-native operations across the People Team, identifying opportunities to leverage technology and fundamentally redesign workflows while maintaining the human elements of our work.
Ensure operational excellence and compliance and continuously evolve our people processes as the business scales.
Lead complex, cross-functional processes and partner with internal stakeholders including Legal, Finance, Tech Ops, and Quality Assurance to deliver business outcomes.
Serve as the escalation point for complex people operations, benefits, and compensation matters.
Manage external vendor relationships and consultant partnerships while continuously evaluating opportunities to improve quality, cost, and effectiveness.
Program Design & Strategic Execution
Elevate and own our performance, promotion, and compensation review programs to ensure quality, consistency, and scalability as we grow.
Own our compensation strategy and execution for Formation's unique business model, including framework design, market positioning, and equity programs.
Lead benefits strategy, vendor selection, and plan design, ensuring our total rewards package is competitive and supports our culture and business needs.
Anticipate future people program needs based on business priorities and organizational growth.
People Business Partnership
Serve as a strategic People partner for designated leaders and functions.
Develop a deep understanding of the business and build trusted relationships with leaders to anticipate business needs, identify organizational risks, and develop solutions.
Coach managers through complex people situations while balancing employee experience, business outcomes, and long-term organizational health.
About You
8+ years of experience in people operations, people business partnering, total rewards, and/or HR leadership roles.
Proven track record leveraging AI and automation to improve people operations. You have concrete results, not just enthusiasm, and a clear vision for what an AI-native People Team can become.
Strong operational background. You've owned people systems, benefits, compliance, and built scalable people operations infrastructure that enables the business.
Experience designing and scaling people programs while balancing quality, consistency, and operational efficiency. You’ve successfully led change by building alignment and bringing leaders and employees along through it.
Ability to make independent, complex decisions. You exercise strong judgment, evaluate tradeoffs with a company-wide perspective, and anticipate long-term implications.
Strong ownership mentality and high accountability. You take full responsibility for outcomes, proactively identify opportunities, and drive work to completion.
People management experience. You've developed and elevated individuals and teams, set a high bar for performance, and care deeply about career development.
Strong cross-functional partnership skills. You build trusted relationships with leaders, internal teams, and external vendors.
Comfortable working in fast-paced, high-growth environments. You thrive in ambiguity and can seamlessly shift between strategic thinking and hands-on execution.
Compensation expertise is a plus. You've designed compensation frameworks, conducted market analyses, and thought strategically about equity and total rewards.
Experience in biotech, pharma, or other technical or regulated industries is a plus but not required.
Total Compensation Range: $177,500 - $232,000
Compensation Individual compensation is determined by several factors, including role scope, geographic location, and skills & experience. Your offer will reflect where you fall within the range based on these considerations. In addition to base salary, we offer equity, comprehensive benefits, and generous perks. If the posted range doesn't match your expectations, we still encourage you to apply!
Where We Hire Formation Bio is prioritizing hiring in key hubs, primarily the New York City and Boston metro areas, with a hybrid model requiring 3 days per week in office. Applicants from the Research Triangle (NC) and San Francisco Bay Area may also be considered. Please apply only if you reside in these locations or are willing to relocate.

Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. Our Vision for AI in Pharma
Why This Role Matters
People are the single most important thing we have to get right to succeed as a company. Every hire we make either accelerates or slows down our mission to get critical medicines to patients faster.
We hold an extremely high bar and run a rigorous process. Every person you bring in should be capable of outsized impact: someone who raises the level of the team around them, ships things that would not have happened without them, and moves the company forward in a way that is disproportionate to a single headcount.
About the Role
As Lead Tech Recruiter, you will be at the forefront of attracting and securing top technical talent for our data science, engineering, and product teams. Formation Bio is an AI-native pharma company, and this role is built for someone who thinks that way too. You will develop and execute recruiting strategies that reflect how AI is changing both the work our teams do and the way we find, evaluate, and win the people who do it.
You will own sourcing, screening, and interviewing for mission-critical roles, act as a strategic thought partner to hiring managers and leadership, and continuously push our recruiting process to be smarter, faster, and more rigorous through the intelligent use of AI tools.
Key Responsibilities
Manage your own requisition load end-to-end, from sourcing through offer, holding every hire to a high bar.
Partner with hiring managers and leadership to discuss headcount, prioritize requisitions, and shape hiring strategy for critical technical roles.
Act as a true business partner to directors, VPs, and CTOs, advising on market trends, salary benchmarks, and best practices in technical and AI talent recruiting.
Bring an AI-native mindset to every part of the role: use AI tools (Claude Code, Codex, and similar) to source candidates, calibrate evaluation, streamline workflows, and continuously raise the quality and speed of our process.
Stay genuinely obsessed with AI and technology, tracking where the field is moving so we know exactly who the best people are and how to reach and win them.
Have a perspective on and interest in developing employer branding strategies that position Formation Bio as the place builders come to solve the hardest problems in drug development.
Act as a thought leader in the technical talent market: identify and participate in events, partnerships, and non-obvious channels to find candidates others miss.
Use data and recruiting metrics to identify where our process can improve, and drive those improvements yourself rather than waiting to be asked.
Organize and participate in events relevant to our target candidate pools to build a pipeline of exceptional technical talent.
Qualifications
At least 5 years of technical recruiting experience, with at least 3 in-house at a tech startup, with bonus points for life sciences, health technology, or AI-focused companies.
A demonstrated obsession with AI and technology, not just as a nice-to-have but as a lens you bring to how you source, evaluate, and think about talent.
Fluency using AI tools (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) to make recruiting materially faster and more effective, with real examples of how you've done this.
Experience filling roles across levels, from senior engineers to management, with a track record of hiring people who had outsized impact after joining.
Experience as a genuine strategic partner to directors, VPs, and CTOs.
Strong project management skills and a track record of delivering process improvements that measurably raised the bar for hiring quality.
Demonstrated expertise in non-standard, creative sourcing strategies for hard-to-find technical talent.
Strong alignment with how we work: curiosity, high ownership, and a bias toward efficiency and impact.
Ability to build trust quickly with both hiring managers and candidates, and to operate with little direction while staying closely connected to the team.
What We're Really Looking For
Someone who does not need to be told that AI is changing recruiting. Someone who is already using it, already thinking about what's next, and already holds themselves to a bar as high as the one we hold candidates to. You should read this job description and feel like it was already how you think.

We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.
Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.

Our Vision for AI in Pharma
Our Current Drug Portfolio
Our Technology & Platform
At Formation Bio, our values are the driving force behind our mission to revolutionize the pharma industry. Every team and individual at the company shares these same values, and every team and individual plays a key part in our mission to bring new treatments to patients faster and more efficiently.
About the Position:
As General Manager for a Formation Bio asset, you will be the accountable leader —responsible for translating the investment thesis into action and progressing the asset towards value inflection with speed, efficiency, and leverage. You will own the asset strategy, budget, and execution rhythm, ensuring momentum, clarity, and disciplined delivery across functions. GMs at Formation Bio own outcomes: they make high-stakes decisions (including no-go calls), anticipate inflection points, and deploy resources to maximize value. You will align financial and operational decisions with the asset strategy and work in close partnership with a Clinical Lead and other cross functional partners and stakeholders to advance the asset with scientific rigor, operational excellence, and AI-enabled leverage.
Responsibilities
Refine and deliver the strategy for the asset and define key results that ladder up to asset objectives.
Drive and own business outcomes—including asset P&L, budgets, ROI, and value inflection with speed.
Lead a team of full-time and contract team members, forecasting and pulling resources (functional experts, tech, and other services) as needed.
Partner with the assigned Tech Lead, Clinical Development Lead, and other functional subject matter experts (e.g., CMC, Regulatory, Data Science) to drive asset strategy and execution.
Establish and run team rituals (charters, prioritization touchpoints, etc.) that ensure clarity, accountability, and disciplined execution.
Anticipate and surface tradeoffs, risks, and governance needs, while maintaining autonomy for operational decisions.
Develop and maintain comprehensive governance tools such as asset development roadmaps, registers and dashboards.
Track and manage against success metrics, including milestone adherence, team efficiency and overall asset value.
Provide ongoing strategic updates to the Formation Bio Leadership Team, ensuring alignment with broader portfolio and company-level strategy.
About You
Outcome-Driven: You optimize for value creation and speed, not process for its own sake.
Radically Accountable: You own timelines, budgets, risks, and tradeoffs without relying on matrix ambiguity.
AI-Native: You naturally embed AI and automation into team culture, workflows, and decisions.
Generalist With Range: You flex across disciplines, knowing when to go deep or bring in expertise and when to rely on the team.
Influential Without Authority: You earn trust and alignment among SMEs and functional leaders without direct reporting lines.
Structured & Decisive: You run the team like a business—with sharp prioritization, clear charters, and disciplined execution.
Comfortable in Ambiguity: You thrive in dynamic environments, simplify complexity, and adapt quickly.
Strategically grounded with tactical depth: You seamlessly connect high-level vision to detailed, practical action.
Total Compensation Range: $311,000 - $388,500
Compensation Individual compensation is determined by several factors, including role scope, geographic location, and skills & experience. Your offer will reflect where you fall within the range based on these considerations. In addition to base salary, we offer equity, comprehensive benefits, and generous perks. If the posted range doesn't match your expectations, we still encourage you to apply!
Where We Hire Formation Bio is prioritizing hiring in key hubs, primarily the New York City and Boston metro areas, with a hybrid model requiring 3 days per week in office.
