Manus is seeking a Microbiologist embedded within the Quality Control (QC) function at our Augusta, GA manufacturing plant. This hands-on role owns routine and investigative microbiological testing across raw materials, in-process streams, finished food ingredients, water and utilities, and the manufacturing environment. Key Responsibilities
Microbiological Testing & Methods
- Routine testing — Perform routine micro testing — aerobic / total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms / E. coli, Enterobacteriaceae, and other indicator organisms.
- Pathogen testing — Conduct pathogen screening and confirmation (e.g., Salmonella, Listeria) per validated methods.
- Media & technique — Prepare and QC culture media, reagents, and controls; maintain strict aseptic technique and sterility.
- Lab instrumentation — Operate and maintain micro lab equipment — incubators, autoclaves, biosafety cabinet, and plate-reading or rapid-detection systems.
- Method support — Support method verification / validation and the onboarding of rapid microbiological methods.
Environmental Monitoring & Sanitation Verification
- Environmental monitoring — Execute the environmental monitoring program (EMP): zone-based swabbing and sampling, ATP, and air, water, and utility monitoring.
- Sanitation verification — Verify sanitation effectiveness (post-CIP / COP, hygienic zoning) and support the plant hygiene and sanitation program.
- Trending — Trend EMP and verification data to identify hot spots and emerging microbiological risks.
Investigations, Data & Compliance
- Investigations — Investigate out-of-specification (OOS) and atypical results; lead micro root-cause analysis and support corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Data & reporting — Record and trend data in LIMS and generate periodic microbiological reports and dashboards.
- Documentation — Maintain GLP / GMP documentation, sample chain-of-custody, and retains with full data integrity.
- Audit support — Support GMP, FSMA, HACCP, and GFSI (SQF / BRC) audits and customer and regulatory requests.
- Standards — Contribute to microbiological specifications, sampling plans, and SOPs.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Microbiology, Biology, Food Science, or a closely related discipline.
- 3+ years of microbiology experience in a food, beverage, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, or related manufacturing QC laboratory.
- Hands-on expertise in microbiological methods (enumeration, indicator organisms, pathogen screening) and aseptic technique.

- Apply a strong understanding of U.S. GAAP across fixed assets, inventory, accruals, lease accounting, and investments.

The Fermentation Plant Operator is responsible for the continuing efficient operation of the fermentation plant and providing overtime support as needed for production. This includes maintenance, equipment reliability, and operations. Creativity and decision-making skills are required. Must be able to maintain a good working relationship with all personnel. Work as a member of the fermentation plant team which includes assisting in the Pilot Plant. Controls, monitors, and measures fermentation processes as instructed. Abides by all safely, environmental, and quality requirements. Perform minor maintenance and duties related to product testing, including sampling.

Responsibilities:
- Interface with production to provide resources to solve fermentation and product isolation problems.
- Execute and help evaluate fermentation experiments. This activity includes:
- Prepare fermentation and downstream equipment in accordance to SOPs, this include equipment setup, media make up, equipment disassembly, cleaning, etc.
- Collect samples during manufacturing process for analytical analysis.
- Prepare all required batch records, reflect constantly changing experimental designs and ensure clear communication to the process development subject matter expert of the targeted design parameters.
- Collect and review all batch records. Data reduction includes electronic data conversion into and formatting in Excel for purposes of trending key operational parameters. Data is reviewed and checked. Off-line analytical data is reviewed for accuracy, retesting if necessary. Final results are organized and distributed to the process development subject matter expert.
- Coordinate day-to-day Fermentation Plant activities, including manufacturing scheduling conflicts, coordinating equipment maintenance and installation activities, troubleshooting process upsets, troubleshooting equipment and instrumentation problems, optimizing operations, addressing contamination issues, addressing downtime or other runtime losses.
- Prepare SOP for new process or operations as needed.
- Assist and provide hands-on support of Fermentation Plant maintenance activities, including rebuilding of probes and housings, changing out gear boxes on vessels, rebuilding valves, piping modifications, and modifying/fabricating new and existing equipment.
- Maintain the upkeep of the Fermentation Plant equipment through the process of initiating work notifications/work orders and maintenance scheduling; Use your own tools to correct minor maintenance issues is encouraged.
- Adhere to company EH&S policies and procedure. Ensure fermentation plant compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Physical demand requirements are in excess of sedentary work due to inspection of equipment. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
- Must be able to wear required protective equipment including respirators (if needed).
- Work schedule is considered shift but will vary depending on manufacturing plan and and other extraordinary conditions.

This role focuses on fermentation science and development to bring new commercial bioprocesses through the Manus R&D pipeline. The Fermentation Engineer is responsible for the design, development, optimization, and scale-up of microbial fermentation processes to produce bio-alternatives, applying fundamental microbial physiology and fermentation science knowledge to achieve applied bioprocess objectives. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative. Responsibilities
Process Development & Optimization
- Design and optimize fermentation processes (batch, fed-batch, continuous) for microbial or cell culture systems.
- Develop strategies to improve yield, productivity, titer, and process robustness.
- Conduct media optimization, feeding strategies, and metabolic performance analysis.
- Apply statistical tools (DOE, multivariate analysis) to accelerate process improvement.
Scale-Up & Technology Transfer

- Identify and mitigate scale-dependent risks (mixing, oxygen transfer, heat removal, shear sensitivity).
- Support technology transfer to manufacturing sites or CMOs.

Process Characterization & Validation
- Define critical process parameters (CPPs) and critical quality attributes (CQAs).
- Support process characterization studies and regulatory submissions (as applicable).
