The opportunity
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Industrial Engineer with a strong background in semiconductor factory automation and advanced manufacturing systems. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who can bridge the gap between equipment, process, and data, transforming complex manufacturing operations into highly efficient, automated production environments.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record in semiconductor fabrication, as well as proficiency in Automated Material Handling Systems (AMHS), including Overhead Hoist Vehicles (OHV) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV), and experience with simulation and layout tools such as FlexSim, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
This role is based onsite at either our Austin, TX or Plantation, FL facility. Relocation assistance may be provided for qualified candidates.
What you’ll do
Partner with R&D, Quality, and Production teams to transition new processes into high-volume manufacturing.
Facilitate Kaizen workshops, standard work documentation (SOPs, work instructions), and GMP compliance.
Mentor engineers and technicians in process troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and yield optimization.
Perform time studies, value stream mapping, and OEE analysis to identify and eliminate waste.
Engage directly with equipment vendors and contractors to resolve complex manufacturing issues
Ability to summarize complex information into executive-friendly presentations
The experience you bring
B.S. in Industrial Engineering.
7+ years of experience in semiconductor or optics manufacturing, including automation projects.
Proven experience with AMHS / OHV / AGV systems or other semiconductor automation technologies.
Proficiency in AutoCAD for layout and space optimization.
Proficiency in FlexSim, Siemens Plant Simulation, or similar discrete event simulation tools.
Advanced knowledge of SPC, MSA, CPK, OEE, and DOE methodologies.
Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification.
Skilled in data analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, or Python for process modeling.
Excellent communication, presentation, and cross-functional leadership skills.
Hands-on cleanroom experience in semiconductor or optics manufacturing.
Familiarity with wet cleans, lithography, etching or vacuum process tools.
Experience in designing automation layouts and data-driven process control loops.
Management of an industrial engineering team

The opportunity
As a Staff Process Engineer within our Optical Process Engineering team, you will directly contribute to our light-field technology by developing and deploying advanced dry etch processes into our eyepiece manufacturing flow. You will work cross-functionally with R&D, Equipment Engineering, Manufacturing, Metrology, and Quality teams to ensure process readiness for high-volume waveguide manufacturing. This is a highly visible, hands-on role focused on process development, yield improvement, process transfer, and manufacturing scale-up within a cleanroom semiconductor-style environment.
Location: This position requires being fully onsite at our Austin, TX or Plantation, FL facilities to support hands-on collaboration and daily operations. Relocation assistance is available for non-local candidates.
What you’ll do
Be part of a high-performing New Product Introduction team developing next-generation optical waveguide technologies
Develop, optimize, and sustain dry etch and plasma processes for wafer-based manufacturing applications
Design experiments, analyze process data, and generate reports to improve process capability and manufacturing performance
Drive process control, yield improvement, and defect reduction using DOE, SPC, CPK analysis, and structured root cause methodologies
Troubleshoot complex process and equipment issues in partnership with manufacturing and equipment engineering teams
Support transfer of R&D processes into high-volume manufacturing, including process qualification and scale-up activities
Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, manufacturing, metrology, and equipment teams to develop new processes and capabilities
Develop and maintain SOPs, process documentation, training materials, and operational standards
Lead PFMEA, OCAP, Kaizen, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on optical quality, throughput, OEE, and cost reduction
Support implementation of process automation, advanced analytics, and data-driven process optimization strategies
Mentor engineers and technicians while helping scale robust, production-ready manufacturing processes
The experience you bring
8+ years of experience in nanofabrication, semiconductor manufacturing, or related microfabrication environments
Hands-on experience with dry etch/plasma processing equipment, vacuum systems, process development, recipe optimization, and yield improvement
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, or Materials Science Engineering, or a related technical field
Hands-on wafer processing experience in cleanroom semiconductor or optical manufacturing environments
Strong understanding of plasma physics, plasma-surface interactions, and etching mechanisms
Experience with SPC, DOE, process capability analysis, and structured root cause methodologies such as Six Sigma or DMAIC
Ability to troubleshoot complex process and equipment issues in high-volume manufacturing environments
It’s exciting if you also have
M.S. or Ph.D. in a related engineering discipline
Experience with JMP or other statistical analysis tools
Metrology experience using SEM, TEM, or related characterization techniques
Familiarity with FDC, automated data collection, or process automation systems
Experience supporting wafer-level optics, photonics, or advanced optical manufacturing environments
Additional Requirements
30-50% travel required, including trips to Plantation, FL for cross-site collaboration

The opportunity
As a Sr Mechanical Engineer within our Hardware Equipment Team, you'll play a pivotal role in designing and developing advanced, automated clean room manufacturing equipment for diffractive optics used in smart glasses. What you’ll do
Design and integrate precision mechanical systems, including robotics, linear motors, encoders, air bearings, and exact constraint mechanisms, to achieve micron-level accuracy in manufacturing equipment.
Collaborate on the development of machine vision systems integration, pneumatic actuators, valving, system controls and sensor integration and electrical panels for automated process equipment.
Lead the mechanical design of dispensing and curing systems, optical positioners, and metrology tools to ensure reliable performance in clean room environments.
Perform design analysis, simulations, and bench-top prototyping to validate equipment functionality under varying priorities and constraints.
Optimize machine frames and precision mechanisms for stability, repeatability, and ease of assembly.
Troubleshoot and iterate on designs based on testing feedback, balancing scrappy resourcefulness with rigorous process adherence.
Work cross-functionally with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to integrate components into complete systems. Also work with OEM’s and contract manufacturers to create multiple instances of your system designs.
Document designs through specifications, drawings, manuals, and testing procedures to support scalable production.
The experience you bring
5+ years of professional experience in mechanical design for precision manufacturing equipment or automation systems.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Proven expertise in designing systems with micron-level precision, such as stages, actuators, or optical alignment tools.
Hands-on experience with CAD software (CREO for modeling complex assemblies preferred).
Familiarity with pneumatic and electromechanical components, including valves, linear motors, and encoders.
Knowledge of clean room standards and manufacturing processes like dispensing, curing, and metrology.
Ability to conduct design analysis, including FEA, tolerance stack-ups, and failure mode assessments.
Experience in prototyping, testing, and iterating on mechanical designs in a resource-constrained environment.
Strong problem-solving skills with a track record of adapting to changing priorities while maintaining rigor in critical areas.

Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience with machine vision cameras or optical systems in precision applications.
Familiarity with air bearings or advanced constraint design principles.

The opportunity
As a Senior Equipment Engineering Technician (Etch) within our Manufacturing Engineering team, you will play a critical role in maintaining and optimizing plasma etch systems that are essential to our waveguide manufacturing process. This is a highly hands-on role focused on maximizing tool uptime, resolving complex failures, and driving performance improvements in a cleanroom environment.
You will partner closely with Equipment Engineering, Process Engineering, and Operations teams to support high-volume manufacturing and ensure stable, repeatable tool performance.
What you’ll do
Perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on plasma etch systems (Plasma-Therm or similar dry etch tools)
Diagnose and resolve issues across vacuum systems, RF power delivery, gas flow systems, and plasma processes
Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic subsystems, including motors, pumps, valves, sensors, and PLC-controlled systems
Support tool recovery and uptime efforts, minimizing downtime in a high-volume manufacturing environment
Execute and continuously improve preventive and corrective maintenance procedures
Partner with Process and Equipment Engineers on tool optimization, experiments, and process stability improvements
Analyze equipment performance data to identify root cause and recurring failure modes
Support vendor interactions and escalations, including remote diagnostics and onsite service coordination
Train and mentor junior technicians; develop SOPs and technical documentation
Ensure compliance with cleanroom and safety protocols
What you'll bring
5+ years of hands-on experience supporting semiconductor manufacturing equipment, with a strong preference for etch tools
Direct experience with plasma etch systems (Plasma-Therm, Lam, Applied Materials, or similar)
Strong understanding of vacuum systems, RF / plasma systems, gas delivery, and process tool integration
Proven ability to troubleshoot complex systems across electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic domains
Experience with PLC systems, sensors, alarms, and system-level diagnostics
Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, high-urgency manufacturing environment
Familiarity with cleanroom operations and protocols
Experience documenting maintenance and work orders in systems such as CMMS or equivalent

Experience specifically with Plasma-Therm etch tools
Prior support of high-volume semiconductor or advanced manufacturing environments

The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Staff Metrology & Optical Test Engineer to serve as a key technical leader within our waveguide manufacturing team. This role will drive measurement, calibration, and instrumentation approaches across nanostructure characterization and optical performance testing for outgoing products. The position has broad impact across the organization, helping ensure the highest standards of accuracy, repeatability, and compliance are met in support of customer requirements.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in metrology and optical test principles, quality systems, and advanced measurement equipment, while serving as a strong cross-functional partner and technical resource to the broader organization. This role is integral to advancing our Optics NPI and Manufacturing practices and will work closely with design, process, materials, and integration teams. This position requires being fully onsite in either Plantation, Florida or Austin, Texas.
What you’ll do
Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Influence
Drive and evolve metrology and optical test approaches for Optics NPI and Manufacturing, ensuring alignment with product, process, and quality objectives
Serve as a technical leader for metrology-related problem solving, helping establish best practices in structured root cause analysis and technical communication
Partner closely across R&D, Manufacturing, NPI, Materials, and related teams to support solutions from early NPI through high-volume ramp
Influence measurement strategy, workflow integration, and test methodology to improve capability, consistency, and operational readiness
Deliver clear technical documentation and presentations, and build effective partnerships across internal teams and external suppliers
Measurement and Optical Test Tools:
Lead technical oversight of measurement and test equipment to ensure calibration, verification, traceability, and compliance with applicable quality standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 9001
Develop and refine standard methodologies for metrology and optical test, including measurement uncertainty analysis, gauge R&R, calibration planning, and tool performance validation
Define, develop, and qualify advanced test and characterization methods to deepen understanding of waveguide materials, processes, and their impact on device performance
Drive setup and optimization of test recipes, configurations, and validation plans, including GR&R, matching studies, calibrated standards, golden units, long-term stability, and factory/site acceptance activities for new equipment
Partner across engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams to improve measurement capability, test robustness, and overall process confidence
Technical Expertise and Support:
Serve as a primary technical subject matter expert for complex measurement, characterization, and optical test challenges, providing guidance across R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and related teams
Apply deep expertise in metrology, characterization, optics, and nanofabrication to support processes such as imprint and replication, wafer cleaning, plasma etch, chemical vapor deposition, and metals deposition
Drive technical prioritization across metrology and optical test activities to support efficient workflow, strong measurement coverage, and timely problem solving
Support and optimize metrology platforms such as AFM, ellipsometry, interferometry, and related characterization equipment, as well as waveguide optical testers tied to key performance metrics including ANSI, MTF, and Transmission
Analyze and interpret data from metrology and optical test tools, including identification of measurement error sources, tool variation, and tester-to-tester correlations
Operations and Compliance:
Drive metrology and optical test capability planning, tool implementation, and compliance support in partnership with Quality and cross-functional teams to support the company’s Quality Management System
What you’ll bring
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field
6+ years of experience in metrology, optical test, quality, or precision manufacturing, including strong hands-on experience with advanced materials and nanostructure characterization
Deep technical expertise in metrology methods, measurement systems, uncertainty analysis, and statistical data analysis using tools such as JMP, Python, R, or Matlab
Hands-on experience with characterization techniques such as SEM, AFM, ellipsometry, interferometry, XRD, EDX, uXRF, FTIR, DSC, and TGA
Strong working knowledge of relevant quality and metrology standards such as ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025, and MSA/GR&R methodologies
Comfortable working in a cleanroom laboratory environment and able to operate effectively in fast-paced settings with evolving priorities
It’s exciting if you also have
Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related technical discipline
Experience in semiconductor, AR hardware, or other advanced manufacturing environments
Six Sigma, CQE, or related quality/process certification
Experience with LIMS, calibration management systems, or manufacturing systems integration
Experience with scripting or data post-processing tools such as Python, R, JMP, or Matlab

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
US Base Salary Range
$140,000 - $155,000 USD
