Staff Security Engineer

Redpanda is the first runtime and control plane for agent-data interaction — a unified platform that combines streaming, SQL analytics, and intelligent connectivity with the governance layer enterprise AI agents need in production.
Built on infrastructure already trusted by Fortune 500 companies and fast-growing startups, Redpanda enforces governance entirely outside the agent's data path, controlling what agents see, limiting what they do, and capturing a tamper-proof record of everything they touch, so organizations never have to choose between innovation and control.
About the Role:
We're looking for an experienced Staff Security Engineer to own and scale application security across Redpanda's products, from the C++ core streaming engine to our Go cloud control plane, Console, and Rust/Go data-transform SDKs. Security at Redpanda is an engineering problem, not a checklist: you'll spend your time analyzing and breaking real systems code, building the paved roads and automation that make the secure path the default, and helping teams ship faster because security is built in rather than bolted on.
You'll be one of two engineers on a small, high-trust product security team, partnering every day with the engineers who build a system that Fortune 500 companies trust with their most critical data. Reporting to the Director of Information Security and working alongside our infrastructure security engineer, you'll own the day-to-day application-security work: secure SDLC, threat modeling, code-level vulnerability discovery, fuzzing the core engine, and our coordinated vulnerability disclosure and PSIRT response. As the application-security practice grows, you'll help shape its technical direction (in partnership with the Director, who owns the overall security program) and raise the security bar across all of engineering.
You Will:
- Lead threat modeling and secure design reviews for new product features across the C++ engine, Go control plane, and Console, catching trust-boundary and authorization flaws before code is written.
- Own and tune our application security testing (SAST, SCA / dependency scanning, secret scanning, and DAST) across C++, Go, and Rust, driving down false positives and gating the highest-severity findings in CI.
- Build the fuzzing harnesses for the core engine (coverage-guided and protocol-aware) and partner with platform engineering to run them continuously, integrating sanitizers to surface memory-safety and parsing defects early.
- Drive deep secure code review in systems languages, pairing your own expertise with AI-assisted analysis, and partner with engineering to eradicate whole classes of vulnerabilities rather than patching one bug at a time.
- Operate our product security incident response (PSIRT) and coordinated vulnerability disclosure: triaging external researcher reports, driving fixes with engineering, and publishing advisories and CVEs.
- Strengthen our software supply chain (dependency hygiene, SBOMs, build provenance, and progress toward higher SLSA build levels) in partnership with platform engineering.
- Stand up a security champions program and secure-by-default building blocks (libraries, patterns, guardrails) so engineering teams can own security with your support.
- Define security requirements and help shape the security release gates, and advise on product security features: authentication, authorization / RBAC, encryption, audit logging, multi-tenant isolation, and the Agentic Data Plane.
- Raise the security bar across engineering through pragmatic standards, training, and hands-on partnership, using modern AI-assisted development workflows (including tools like Claude Code) to scale your impact.
You Have:
- 7+ years in application or product security or adjacent specialties, with a track record of owning AppSec initiatives end-to-end and influencing engineering teams without direct authority.
- The ability to review and reason about code in a systems language (C++ or Rust strongly preferred, since our core engine is C++; Go valuable across the cloud control plane and tooling), whether reviewing it directly or with AI assistance, with strong instincts for memory safety, concurrency, and the vulnerability classes that matter (use-after-free, buffer overflow, injection, authorization flaws).
- Comfort with the security risks of memory-unsafe code and the appetite to fuzz it; fuzzing or sanitizer experience is a strong plus.
- Practical proficiency with the AppSec toolchain (SAST, SCA, secret scanning, DAST) and the judgment to apply risk-based prioritization rather than rigid textbook approaches.
- Demonstrated experience leading threat modeling and secure design reviews for non-trivial systems.
- Working knowledge of software supply-chain security (dependencies, SBOMs, signing, SLSA) and secure CI/CD practices.
- Familiarity with cloud (AWS / GCP / Azure) and Kubernetes security as it relates to the application layer.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working in a globally distributed, async environment (e.g., GitHub).
Nice to Have:
- Experience with fuzzing (libFuzzer / AFL++ / OSS-Fuzz) and sanitizers (ASan / UBSan / MSan) on a C or C++ codebase.
- Background securing distributed systems, databases, or data-infrastructure products, including threat modeling consensus / replication and multi-tenant isolation.
- Experience running a PSIRT, operating as a CNA, or managing a bug bounty / coordinated disclosure program.
- Exposure to compliance programs (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, FedRAMP) from the engineering-evidence side.
- Contributions to open-source security, or experience handling vulnerabilities in a public open-source repository.

About the Role:
As a Principal Growth Marketing Manager, you’ll build and scale the programs that help technical practitioners and decision makers discover, evaluate, and adopt Redpanda.
You’ll own the strategy and execution across paid search, paid social, content syndication, and other digital channels. You’ll set the roadmap, run experiments, analyze performance, and continuously improve how we reach and convert our target audience. This role will require you to collaborate closely with product marketing, content, demand generation, sales, and operations to turn top-of-the-funnel awareness into pipeline and revenue growth.
You’ll own outcomes, not just campaigns: growing our marketing database, increasing brand awareness, driving pipeline, and acquiring new customers. If you enjoy learning from data and finding creative ways to reach technical audiences, you’ll thrive in this role.
You Will:
Set and drive the performance marketing roadmap and experimentation calendar (channels, creative, targeting, landing pages)
Own competitive and channel benchmarking to identify new paid/emerging platforms worth testing
Own multi-persona campaign strategy and messaging across paid search, paid social, and content syndication channels, engaging both technical practitioners and decision makers rather than optimizing to a single persona
Manage and optimize global paid media campaigns and budget across Google, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, and emerging platforms, reallocating spend based on CAC, pipeline contribution, and ROI by channel
Execute and scale paid social programs focused on awareness that yields account engagement and pipeline generation
Own the Qualified.com platform to create custom, targeted digital experiences on our website to generate pipeline and account engagement
Build and scale content syndication and database growth programs to expand the marketing database
Drive conversion rate optimization on paid landing pages in partnership with web marketing and product marketing
Manage agency and vendor partners executing on campaigns, holding them accountable to quality, timelines, and performance against goals
Own brand awareness measurement (share of voice, impression share, engagement) and tie it back to pipeline impact
Partner with marketing ops to build and maintain attribution infrastructure that connects top-of-funnel awareness activity to pipeline and revenue outcomes
Monitor, analyze, and report on funnel performance, conversion rates, attribution, and ROI
Build automation workflows using internal and external AI tools, ensuring growth experiments run efficiently and at scale
Work closely with BDRs and sales teams so leads from paid campaigns are handed off with the right context, helping sales prioritize and convert them effectively
You Have:
5+ years of experience in digital marketing or growth marketing in B2B SaaS or infrastructure software
Deep expertise in managing paid media campaigns
Strong understanding of attribution, conversion tracking, and marketing analytics
Experience managing campaigns with platforms like Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Reddit Ads, and analytics tools
Familiarity with AI search trends, GEO, AEO, and optimizing content for LLM visibility
Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
Excellent communication and project management skills
Experience working in fast-paced startup or high-growth environments
Nice to Have:
Experience marketing developer tools, cloud infrastructure, streaming, Kafka, or data platforms
Experience with AI-driven marketing tools, automation, and agent workflows
Experience with Qualified.com or similar website personalization/conversational marketing tools
U.S. base salary range for this role is $160,500 - $189,000. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
Redpanda is building the Agentic Data Plane (ADP) — the streaming and data infrastructure the world’s largest enterprises run mission-critical agents on. The enterprises winning right now are building agents that encode their own business logic, their own data, their own institutional knowledge into production-grade infrastructure. That’s digital sovereignty, and Redpanda ADP is the infrastructure layer that makes it real.
Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) is the delivery arm. We embed engineers directly with strategic customers and build the agents and integrations that turn ADP into owned outcomes. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you are the builder: embedded on-site, working inside the customer’s environment, writing the code that ships.
This is not a solutions engineering role. You are not here to demo or advise. You are here to build — agents, integrations, data pipelines, and the infrastructure that runs them — alongside a customer team, in their environment, on their timeline.
You Will:
Build at the customer site. Write production-quality agents, integrations, and data pipelines on Redpanda ADP, inside the customer’s environment and codebase. What you ship has to work after you leave.
Work in unfamiliar territory, fast. Every customer engagement is a new codebase, a new data environment, a new set of constraints. Ramp quickly, orient to what exists, build on top of it without breaking it.
Own the technical deliverable. Understand what the engagement is supposed to produce, design the technical approach, build it, and hand it off clean — documented, maintainable, and running in production.
Be the Redpanda technical voice with the customer’s engineers. Work alongside their team daily. Earn their trust. Make sure the work integrates correctly with what they already have and what they’ll maintain after you leave.
Drive toward exit from day one. Build with handoff in mind. Write documentation that their team can actually use. Train them on what you built. Don’t create dependencies on you.
Feed learnings back. Identify patterns across engagements — what customers keep needing to build, where ADP makes things hard, what should be productized. Bring that back to Product and Engineering clearly.
You Have:
Engineering depth. You write production software. You’ve built backend systems, data pipelines, APIs, or agent systems that ran in production and had real consequences when they broke. Language background is flexible; what matters is that you build things that work.
Agent and integration experience. You’ve built agents, worked with LLM APIs, or built integrations between complex systems. You know what makes an agent reliable vs. brittle, and you’ve made that call in production.
Ability to operate in any environment. You’ve worked in someone else’s codebase, with constraints you didn’t set, in a stack you didn’t choose. You can read unfamiliar code, understand what it does, and extend it without breaking it.
Customer-facing communication. You can work directly with a customer’s engineering team — their leads, their architects, their individual contributors — and be a credible, trusted technical partner. You don’t need a PM to translate for you.
Shipped at a customer site or in a deployment context. You’ve personally been in the room when something hard went live. You know the difference between a demo and a production deployment.
Bonus:
Experience in a forward-deployed or customer-embedded engineering model — Anthropic FDE, OpenAI Deployed Engineer, Stripe FDE, Sierra, Palantir FDSE, or analogous.
Background in streaming or real-time data systems (Kafka, Flink, Redpanda, or similar).
Experience in regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, public sector) or air-gapped environments.
Have been the first or only technical person in a customer engagement — run it end-to-end without a playbook.
How We Work:
Reports to: Head of FDE
Travel: 30–50% during active engagements; lighter between engagements. You’ll be on-site when the build is live.
US Salary base range is $194,400- $228,800 and Canadian Salary base range is 244,540 CAD- 287,694 CAD. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Overview
Application
Redpanda is the first runtime and control plane for agent-data interaction — a unified platform that combines streaming, SQL analytics, and intelligent connectivity with the governance layer enterprise AI agents need in production.
Built on infrastructure already trusted by Fortune 500 companies and fast-growing startups, Redpanda enforces governance entirely outside the agent's data path, controlling what agents see, limiting what they do, and capturing a tamper-proof record of everything they touch, so organizations never have to choose between innovation and control.
About the Role:
We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help architect and build Redpanda's Agentic Data Plane (ADP), the control and execution layer that powers how AI agents safely interact with real-world data across the technological sprawl of the modern enterprise. Redpanda’s Agentic Data Plane enables intelligent agents to autonomously access, reason over, and act on enterprise data in real time, while providing their human counterparts with the visibility and control to ensure and validate that they do so securely. It combines Redpanda’s industry-leading low-latency streaming layer, a distributed query engine for real-time context, 300+ connectors for seamless data integration, and a global policy and observability framework that enforces access, records intent, and enables replayable audits.
You'll work on identifying and integrating the next generation of ADP capabilities as the agentic AI landscape evolves, translating emerging research and industry shifts into concrete engineering proposals and product bets. You'll partner closely across Engineering, with our Product and GTM teams, as well as directly with strategic customers to shape the product’s architecture and direction.
This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco office.
You Will:
Track emerging research, frameworks, and industry developments in the agentic AI space, and translate the most relevant signals into concrete engineering proposals and product bets
Identify, prototype, and deliver high-leverage emerging capabilities for ADP, in partnership with the broader team
Define architectural patterns for new ADP capabilities, ensuring they integrate cleanly with the existing runtime, policy, and observability layers
Engage directly with strategic customers and the field to stress-test new capabilities against real enterprise deployment scenarios
Serve as a technical ambassador for ADP externally, publishing research, writing engineering blog posts, and speaking at conferences to establish Redpanda's credibility at the frontier of agentic infrastructure
Participate in on-call and help drive down operational toil, improving system observability and self-healing capabilities over time
You Have:
10+ years of software engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of leading the design and delivery of complex, large-scale distributed systems
Experience building or contributing to emerging areas of agentic AI infrastructure, e.g. eval frameworks, orchestration layers, context management, AI gateways, or similar
Fluency with AI-assisted development at the level of agentic orchestration, i.e. composing multi-agent coding workflows with subagents to dramatically accelerate research and prototyping
Deep expertise in at least one systems language (Go preferred) and comfort working across the stack
Understanding of streaming data systems, messaging infrastructure, or data plane/control plane architectures, experience with Apache Kafka or Redpanda is a plus
Experience designing and operating systems that enforce access control, policy, and auditability at scale
Self-directed, strong written communicator, comfortable collaborating asynchronously in GitHub, Slack, and Google Docs
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Able to lead without authority across engineering teams and engage credibly with technical customers and external audiences
Nice to Have:
Familiarity with AI safety, alignment, or responsible AI research as it applies to autonomous systems in enterprise environments
Experience with protocol buffers, protoreflect and codegen
Background in security, identity, or data governance systems relevant to enterprise environments
Experience running Kafka/Redpanda and/or Postgres at scale
Experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure across AWS, GCP, or Azure
Prior experience in an early-stage or growth-stage startup, especially in a category-defining product area
