Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. Substack empowers independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators of all types to create, share, and make a living off their work through subscriptions, while offering them creative freedom, ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences.
This is a "player-coach" leadership seat. We are looking for an elite financial strategist, master modeler, and AI-native operator who will own Substack's long-term financial engine, lead our company-wide budgeting process, and ultimately hire and lead a world-class FP&A team.
In this role, you will pioneer an AI-native finance organization. By leveraging modern technology, automation, and AI tools, you and your team will bypass traditional spreadsheet busywork to operate as an ultra-high-leverage "tiger team"—one that asks the sharpest strategic questions, uncovers crucial business drivers, and rapidly executes on the answers alongside the CEO, CFO, and executive team.
At Substack, you will hold a front-row seat—and a hands-on steering wheel—in shaping the business model behind the future of independent media. You’ll work directly alongside our founders and executive team to build a durable, generation-defining company.
Responsibilities
Team Building & Leadership: Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing FP&A team as Substack scales. Establish team culture, operating standards, and career paths while remaining deeply hands-on in the highest-stakes strategic initiatives.
AI-Native Finance Architecture: Architect an AI-powered, tech-forward FP&A organization. Empower your team with automation and modern data workflows to accelerate financial modeling, variance reporting, and scenario planning.
Company-Wide Budgeting & Forecasting: Design, architect, and lead Substack’s annual budget cycle and rolling quarterly re-forecasts. Partner directly with executive leadership and department heads (Product, Engineering, Marketing, Ops) to build driver-based operational budgets and headcount plans aligned with core business goals.
Budget vs. Actuals (BvA) & Variance Analysis: Establish spending discipline and monthly BvA cadences across the company. Analyze variance drivers, hold department leaders accountable to budget targets, and surface proactive risk-mitigation options when expenses or revenues deviate from plan.
Corporate Financial Model & Long-Range Strategy: Build, maintain, and continuously upgrade Substack’s multi-year three-statement corporate model. Translate high-level strategic goals into granular financial roadmaps.
Creator & Network Economics: Deep-dive into Substack’s platform economics—including creator monetization, subscription take-rates, reader LTV/CAC, churn dynamics, and payment processing margins—to inform pricing, budget allocation, and product investment decisions.
Board & Investor Storytelling: Own financial reporting for executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and investors. Prepare board decks, investor updates, and scenario models for future capital raises or strategic transactions.
About You
Elite Quantitative Foundation: 5–10 years of total experience, starting with foundational years at a top-tier investment bank, private equity firm, or top management consulting firm, followed by high-impact Strategic Finance or FP&A experience at a fast-growing tech company. MBA preferred but not necessary.
Proven Leadership Potential / Track Record: Demonstrated ability or clear readiness to recruit, manage, and mentor quantitative talent. You know how to set high operational standards, delegate effectively, and scale a team without adding bureaucratic noise.
AI-Native Mindset: You naturally use cutting-edge AI workflows, automation, and modern tools to multiply leverage for yourself and your team. You actively eliminate manual repetitive work, baseline reporting, and data ingestion tasks so your team can focus on high-level strategic problem-solving.
Budgeting Process Master: You have built and run company-wide annual budgeting cycles. You know how to drive cross-functional alignment, enforce budget discipline, and streamline planning cycles across complex organizations.
Master Modeler & Data Fluent: Exceptional financial modeling capability paired with hands-on data manipulation skills (familiarity with Snowflake, Looker, Python/R, or modern FP&A stack a plus).
Executive Presence & High Ownership: Able to translate detailed financial outputs into concise, persuasive executive recommendations for the CEO, CFO, and Board members. Low ego, high hustle, with the Gravitas to partner effectively with senior executives.
Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $200,000 - $300,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Substack is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, national origin, veteran or disability status. We’re seeking people passionate about enabling independent expression and building a better business model for creators. If you want to see what media, communities, and content can become when unmoored from advertising models, and you have the skills and experience to contribute, we’d love to meet you.

We are looking for an exceptional, high-leverage Business Operations leader to serve as a strategic co-pilot to our CEO and CFO.
This is not a pure strategy seat, a deck-building role, or traditional corporate management. We are looking for an "athlete": someone with elite analytical rigor, a first-principles mindset, and the hands-on drive to build data pipelines, run complex business analyses, and personally execute high-stakes initiatives across the company.
You will sit at the center of Substack’s business—identifying bottlenecks, uncovering growth drivers, optimizing creator and reader economics, and building the operating infrastructure that scales our business.
At Substack, you’ll work directly alongside our founders and executive leadership team to shape the future of independent publishing and media. You’ll have a front-row seat—and a hands-on steering wheel—in scaling the business.
Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Execution: Uncover, prioritize, and drive the business’s highest-impact initiatives across product, growth, pricing, and creator economics.
Data-Driven Business Insights: Get hands-on keyboard with our data. Perform deep-dive analyses on core metrics (e.g., creator churn, reader LTV, network monetization, conversion funnels) to guide product and monetization decisions.
External & Market Intelligence: Conduct rigorous competitive analysis, market mapping, and strategic positioning to evaluate new opportunities, industry shifts, and expansion vectors.
Executive Decision Support: Partner directly with the CEO and CFO to translate complex operational data into clear, actionable executive decisions and board-level strategy.
Management Infrastructure: Design and run our business cadence—KPI tracking, operational reviews, cross-functional alignment, and objective-setting—keeping the executive team in sync and operating with discipline.
Team Building & Leadership: Lead and mentor a lean team of operators as Substack scales, while remaining willing and eager to do the frontline analytical work yourself.
About You
Elite Foundation: 5–10 years of total work experience, including foundational years at a top-tier management consulting firm or investment bank, followed by high-impact BizOps/Strategy experience at a fast-growing tech company. Top-tier undergraduate or MBA (HBS, Stanford, Wharton, etc.) preferred.
Hands-on Analytics: Comfortable with quantitative modeling and data manipulation. Ideally you don’t ask a team to pull numbers for you—you dig into the database yourself.
First-Principles Problem Solver: You break down complex, messy problems into clear hypotheses and actionable frameworks before writing code or pulling data.
Bias for Action & Execution: You don't stop at giving recommendations or making slides. You can help drive implementation end-to-end in partnership with other leaders.
Low Ego, High Ownership: You act like an owner. You care deeply about solving the right problems for creators and readers, regardless of whether a task falls neatly into your job description.
Executive-Level Communication: Concise, direct, and persuasive—able to influence senior executives, engineers, and creative partners alike without relying on corporate jargon.

Overview
Application
Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. Substack empowers independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators of all types to create, share, and make a living off their work through subscriptions, while offering them creative freedom, ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences.
Brand Partnerships at Substack
We're building Substack's sponsorships business from the ground up. The Implementation Lead makes campaigns scale into a marketplace. You own the operational backbone of the business: campaign workflows, integrations/operations, and marketplace quality that makes it all happen. When a brand’s ad ops team and solutions engineers need to understand each other, you're the translator. This is a founding role on a small team and a build role.
Responsibilities
Serve as first-line solutions lead for brands & agencies accessing our marketplace
Implement scalable systems through campaign trafficking, QA, launch, delivery monitoring, and wrap
Build the pipes and process for the business: order management, campaign workflows, reporting, and billing handoffs
Execute and maintain the integrations brands expect, including tracking, third-party, and more
Generate an AI-first outbound engine to drive demand and onboarding into our system
Onboard brands and agencies, then troubleshoot fast when something breaks mid-flight
Work with design and engineering to decide what deserves real tooling and what an ad-hoc operation can handle for now
Write the playbooks and documentation that let the team move faster and better
About You
10+ years in ad operations, solutions engineering, or technical account management at a platform, publisher, or ad tech company
Hands-on experience with campaign trafficking, tag management, and third-party measurement or verification vendors
Fluency with data: strong spreadsheet skills at minimum, SQL and scripting a real advantage, and the judgment to know when a number looks wrong
Experience sitting in on sales calls to answer the technical questions and scope feasibility on the spot
The range to debug a tracking discrepancy with an agency in the morning and spec an internal tool with an engineer in the afternoon
An operator's instinct for process: you build systems that scale without over-engineering before there's volume to justify it
Familiarity with how creator sponsorships are sold, delivered, and measured is a plus
Experience with APIs, workflow automation, or light scripting (Python, JavaScript) is a plus
Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $150,000 - $200,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.

This is a founding role on a small team, so the playbook is yours to write.
Responsibilities:
Build sponsorships revenue number, and the pipeline, forecast, and pacing behind it
Sell directly to senior brand and agency decision-makers, leading the largest and most strategic deals from prospecting through close
Contribute to building the sales infrastructure a new business needs: territory and account coverage, pricing and packaging discipline, CRM hygiene, and a deal process that holds up as volume grows
Translate Substack's story into a pitch that lands with CMOs and media planners, working with creative strategy to shape proposals that feel native to the platform
Work closely with publishers and their teams to make sure sold campaigns are ones they actually want to run
Bring market signal back into the company, shaping product, pricing, and positioning based on what you hear in rooms with buyers
Represent Substack at industry events and in key agency relationships, opening doors for the whole team

10+ years in media or advertising sales, with meaningful time selling premium, direct-sold sponsorships at a publisher, platform, or media company
A track record of closing seven-figure deals with brands and holding company agencies, and relationships you can activate from day one

Fluency in how brands buy creator and content-led media, including measurement expectations, agency dynamics, and where budgets are moving
Strong instincts for pricing and packaging, and the discipline to protect them under pressure to close
Exceptional communication skills; you can pitch a CMO, coach a team member, and help build products that land in market
Genuine belief in independent publishing and what Substack is building; bonus if you're a Substack reader or writer yourself

Creative Strategist, Brand Partnerships

Employment Type

Department
Sponsorships
Overview
Application
Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. The terms of our culture should not be set by gate-keeping legacy media or chaos-fueling social media, but by the people who make and participate in that culture. Substack's model, based on direct subscriptions, has fueled an explosion of independent publishing. It empowers creators with economic autonomy, creative ownership, and a direct connection to their most engaged audiences.
About the Role
The Brand Partnership team at Substack is building our sponsorships business from the ground up. The Creative Strategist sits between the brands and their agencies and the publishers and their agents on Substack. Your job is to turn a brand's goal into a campaign idea, find the publishers who can carry that idea credibly, and stay with it from the first pitch through the work going live and wrapping post-campaign. This is a founding role on a small team, so the frameworks are yours to write.
Responsibilities
Craft creative, culture-defining ideas that work for a brand and feel native to Substack, rather than an ad bolted onto someone's content
Match brands with the right creators and publications, using judgment about audience, voice, and what a given publisher will want to do
Own the creative side of the pre-sale: read the brief, build the proposal, and respond to client feedback with new concepts and pivots
Run campaigns from idea through execution, keeping the brand, the publisher, and our team pointed in the same direction
Join client and agency calls to pull out the information you need to sharpen brand goals into clear pitch materials that help brands picture what they can do on Substack
Manage campaign reporting and metrics reports
Watch what's working across the platform and feed real examples back into the next round of ideas
About You
5+ years in creative strategy, branded content, or content strategy, at a publisher, an agency, or a platform
A portfolio of campaign ideas you've taken from concept to live work, ideally involving creators, social and/or publishers
A feel for the brand RFP process and for writing proposals that win
Real instincts for the creator and media space, and a sense for what's fresh versus what's played out
The range to hold a creative conversation with a CMO and a practical one with a creator, sometimes on the same day
Strong writing, and the organization to run several campaigns at once without dropping the details
Sharp project management and attention to detail to ensure no balls are dropped and execution is tight
Familiarity with how creator brand deals are structured and contracted is a plus
Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $130,000 - $170,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.

About the Role
We're looking for an IT Systems Administrator to own our internal IT operations end to end. This is a hands-on individual contributor role for someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, takes pride in running a tight, well-organized IT function, and knows how to build systems that scale. You'll be the go-to person for everything from onboarding new hires to managing our SaaS tool stack and supporting our path to SOC 2 compliance.
What You'll Own
Identity & Access Management
Administer Okta across our full tool stack — managing SSO, SCIM provisioning, and app integrations
Onboard and offboard users across both Okta and non-Okta applications
Add and deactivate tools in Okta as our stack evolves
Manage and track access for vendors and contractors, ensuring appropriate permissions are granted and revoked promptly
IT Onboarding & Endpoint Management
Own the new hire IT onboarding experience — from laptop setup to tool access on day one
Manage device enrollment, configuration, and compliance through Iru
Maintain hardware inventory and manage device lifecycle
SaaS & Vendor Management
Serve as the point of contact for IT tool vendors
Identify integration requirements for new tools and manage their setup and deprecation
Maintain documentation on our tool stack, access policies, and vendor relationships
SOC 2 Readiness
Partner with our Systems Team to support SOC 2 compliance efforts
Help implement and manage our future compliance platform, such as Vanta.
Ensure IT processes around access, onboarding, and offboarding meet audit requirements
What We're Looking For
3–5 years of experience in a corporate IT or systems administration role, ideally at a tech company
Hands-on Okta experience — you've set up SSO integrations and managed provisioning, not just administered existing configs
Experience with an Apple-focused MDM — Iru/Kandji, Jamf, or similar
Familiarity with SOC 2 requirements and ideally experience working in or toward a SOC 2 environment
Experience with compliance platforms like Vanta or Drata is a plus
Strong communicator who can work cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and external vendors
Organized and process-oriented — you document what you build and build for repeatability

About Substack
Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. Substack empowers independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators of all types to create, share, and make a living off their work through subscriptions — offering them creative freedom, ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences.
We're growing fast. Millions of readers come to Substack directly every month, and our app is the primary destination for our most engaged users. We're looking for a rare hybrid — someone who thinks like a product manager, works closely with engineers, and has deep expertise in the organic growth levers that compound over time: SEO, ASO, and new user onboarding.
The Role
This is a new role on the Growth team and a product role first. You'll own the organic side of our user acquisition flywheel, ensuring that Substack is discoverable at every surface where people are looking for great writing and ideas, and that when they find us, the experience from first click to first subscription is as frictionless as possible.
You'll report to the Head of Growth. You'll work most closely with the Activation team on the onboarding and post-onboarding arc, and with Growth Marketing on ASO, paid-to-organic handoffs, and bespoke App Store landing pages.
This is a hybrid role in the truest sense: you'll write PRDs and work with engineers one day, and audit keyword rankings or optimize an App Store listing the next. You should be comfortable in both modes and know which one the moment calls for.
What You'll Do
User Sign-up & Onboarding
Own the first-run experience end-to-end: app splash, sign-up flow, first-session orientation, and the handoffs that turn a new install into an active reader
Partner with the Activation team on the post-onboarding arc — ensuring the moves we make in the first 60 seconds compound through the first week and beyond
Design and run experiments to improve sign-up conversion, first-action completion, and D1 / D7 retention, with particular attention to users arriving from different surfaces (organic search, App Store browse, creator-shared links, paid campaigns)
Define and instrument the funnel events needed to measure quality across the sign-up and activation journey
App Store Optimization (ASO)
Own App Store and Google Play listing optimization across all Substack surfaces: the main app listing, bespoke vertical landing pages, and creator-specific pages
Design and run experiments to improve install conversion rates — working with creative and data teams to test copy, screenshots, preview videos, and ratings/review strategy
Partner with Growth Marketing on paid-to-organic handoffs, particularly where paid campaigns drive traffic to custom App Store landing pages and ASO affects the downstream conversion rate
Monitor competitor ASO strategies and maintain keyword coverage across category-relevant and creator-adjacent search terms in both stores
SEO
Own Substack's SEO strategy — protecting and extending an already-strong position rather than rebuilding it
Partner with product and engineering to ensure any product-level changes (new pages, URL structures, navigation, rendering, indexability) have SEO and AEO implications accounted for before launching
What We're Looking For
5-8 years Product management experience and strong product instincts: you've written specs, worked in sprints with engineers, and understand how to navigate a product roadmap to get growth work prioritized
High agency and strong written communication — this role requires influencing engineering and product partners, which means making crisp cases for why growth work should be prioritized
Strong analytical skills — you can build your own analyses, define the right success metrics for an experiment, and know the difference between a signal and noise in an A/B test
Technical SEO fluency — you understand how rendering, crawlability, structured data, Core Web Vitals, and site architecture affect rankings, and you can have a substantive conversation with an engineer about any of them
Hands-on ASO experience including keyword research, listing copy optimization, creative testing, and conversion rate analysis across both the App Store and Google Play
Experience with answer engine optimization (AEO) and an understanding of how AI-powered search is changing organic discovery — or a clear point of view on how to think about it
Genuine interest in media, publishing, and the creator economy
Why This Role, Why Now
Substack Is quickly becoming much more than just an email newsletter product. Our app is the newest and most valuable strategic asset as it is a force multiplier in the growth of the homegrown Substack network, which has propelled Substack to become a cultural phenomenon that millions of people come to daily. You'll operate at the center of this growth, with the product and engineering partnership, the data access, and the mandate to accelerate the organic flywheel.
Compensation
Substack's compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is $190,000–$230,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise.

Millions of readers now come to Substack directly, and our app is the primary destination for our most engaged users. We're building the subscription network of the internet, and we're looking for a sharp, execution-oriented growth leader to build paid acquisition from the ground up.
The Role
This is Substack's first dedicated paid acquisition hire. You'll own the strategy and execution of paid media across all channels — with an immediate focus on driving net-new, app-first user acquisition at efficient cost. You'll report to the Head of Growth and operate as a key member of the growth team at a pivotal moment: we have strong organic momentum, a proven gifting and referral flywheel within the existing user base, and now we're ready to scale growth beyond it.
This is a high-ownership role. You'll manage budget, own channel strategy, run creative testing, instrument measurement infrastructure, and work cross-functionally with product, data, and creator partnerships to make it all work. You'll define what paid acquisition looks like at Substack including the frameworks, the channels, the metrics, and eventually the team.
What You'll Do
Own paid acquisition end-to-end: strategy, execution, optimization, and reporting across Meta, Google UAC, YouTube, TikTok, podcast, and emerging channels
Design and run rigorous experiments to find efficient CAC on net-new users — people who have never been on Substack before
Build and manage our MMP infrastructure including deferred deep linking, in-app event tracking, and ad platform integrations
Partner with creator partnerships to develop first-party ad creative featuring Substack writers, and establish the playbook for creator-led paid campaigns
Build and maintain lookalike audience pipelines, working with our data team to turn high-quality install cohorts into scalable targeting seeds
Define the right optimization signals at each stage of maturity, from install volume in the learning phase to subscription starts at scale, and work with product and engineering to ensure those events are correctly instrumented and passed to ad platforms
Develop a clear framework for CPI targets and payback windows grounded in install-cohort LTV data, and evolve it as we learn
Collaborate with product on the new user onboarding experience, particularly the deferred deep link personalization flow that connects ad creative to first app experience
Own budget pacing and efficiency reporting, and communicate performance clearly to leadership
Eventually hire and develop a small team as the function grows
What We're Looking For
5–8 years of experience in performance marketing or paid user acquisition, with meaningful time spent at a consumer subscription app or subscription media product
Deep channel expertise across Meta and at least one other major channel (Google UAC, YouTube, TikTok); experience with podcast and influencer-driven acquisition is a plus
Hands-on experience with an MMP (AppsFlyer strongly preferred) including attribution setup, deferred deep linking, event schema design, and fraud prevention
Strong analytical foundation — you're comfortable in SQL, know your way around a data warehouse, and can build your own cohort analyses rather than waiting for a data team to do it for you
Experience building lookalike audience pipelines and thinking rigorously about seed quality, audience overlap, and creative-audience fit
Sharp instincts for creative — you don't need to design ads yourself, but you know what makes a good hook, can brief creative teams and creators effectively, and have a framework for testing and iterating on ad concepts
Fluency with LTV modeling and payback window thinking; you understand why CPI is the wrong primary metric and can articulate what the right one is in a given context
High agency and low ego. This role requires building something from scratch, which means doing unglamorous instrumentation work alongside high-leverage strategy. You're comfortable with both
Genuine curiosity about media, writing, and the creator economy. You should care about what Substack is building, not just the acquisition funnel
Based in San Francisco or New York
Why This Role, Why Now
Paid acquisition at Substack is genuinely greenfield. We have strong data infrastructure, a product with real retention and monetization, a growing app with millions of daily active users, and an expanding network of some of the world’s most influential creators. The challenge (and the opportunity) is extending that to cold audiences at scale.

Listed by Substack for a position based in the United States. Employers on this board attest they are hiring domestically.
Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the most interesting people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. The terms of our culture shouldn't be set by legacy media gatekeepers or chaos-fueling social platforms, but by the people who actively shape it.
This role exists to make Substack the obvious home for those people.
The Role
This is not a creator partnerships role, or influencer marketing, or a PR function.
The work is to craft Substack’s product-led story making the most ambitious voices in culture want to create here. When a great writer /creator/podcaster is deciding where to go to build their independence, we want Substack to feel like the only real answer.
Your north star will be to drive high-quality creator inbound that converts into paid subscriptions and app users. You will craft and bring to life our creator marketing narrative (through product marketing, programs, and creator campaigns), and build the machine that drives cultural authority for Substack.
This is a 0-to-1 role which means the team and infrastructure you'll need doesn't fully exist yet. You'll build it.
What you'll own
The platform story at every altitude. You'll develop and steward the product-led narrative that explains what Substack is and why it matters for creators right now. The narrative work is not only external, it includes internal thought leadership that will keep creator-facing work coherent across product, comms,, and partnerships.
The proof-point machine. You'll identify the creator stories that prove what's possible on Substack, and build the operation that gets those stories into the places where creators actually pay attention (press, social, industry moments, word of mouth). You'll know how to make a creator win feel like a signal, not a press release.
Cultural authority. You'll partner with our Head of Partnerships and Head of Brand/Editorial to build campaigns, programs, story angles, partnerships, and content that make Substack a persistent presence in the conversations where creators make decisions. What those look like is yours to determine but it needs to earn Substack a seat at the table across priority categories.
Creator inbound and conversion. You'll own how the platform story reaches the right people and work across partnerships, comms, and product to close the loop from narrative to pipeline to lifecycle to evangelism. What we're saying, to whom, through which channels, and how we know it's working.
The team. You'll build and lead a small, high-craft function that leverages AI to deliver on narrative and a distinctive brand identity at scale.
Who we're looking for
You connect story to business by default. You don't see creativity and growth as separate modes. You care about how a narrative translates to inbound and how a creator win drives signal in the market. You’ve also worked closely enough with product teams to know how a feature becomes a proof point and how to get in front of technical teams early enough to shape/substantiate story rather than react to it.
You've operated at a senior level inside an agency, media company, or platform. You've run programs, led teams, and owned business outcomes. You know how to develop and lead from a point of view, and influence excellence in the people around you.
You've been a writer, journalist, or have spent time working directly with creators. You understand how creative people make decisions, what earns their trust, and what makes a platform story inspire someone to act.
You have legible evidence of taste. Either your own (in what you've written, built, or championed), or in your track record of developing people who have it.
Stretch:You've published something yourself. You understand firsthand how stories travel, what makes audiences grow, and what it feels like to build something people show up for consistently.
Why this role, why now
Substack has global scale, ambitious creators, and a sharp point of view about what the internet needs to look like (especially in the AI era). This point of view is still getting threaded through our platform and go to market. Building, substantiating and capitalizing on Substack’s role in culture – at a time when so many people are looking for quality, depth, originality – is the opportunity in front of us. This person will play a central role.
Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $250,000-310,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Substack empowers independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators of all types to create, share, and make a living from their work through subscriptions, offering them creative freedom, ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences.
The Role
This role leads product for the full creator lifecycle on Substack: from helping independent creators confidently start, publish, grow, and monetize, to serving sophisticated enterprise publishers and partners building at scale on the platform.
You’ll work at the intersection of creator empathy, platform strategy, product analytics, partnerships, and execution. Success in this role means deeply understanding creator needs across the spectrum, identifying the behaviors and product systems that drive long-term success, and building scalable primitives that serve both new creators and large-scale publishers.
You’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Design, Data, and Partnerships teams to translate creator needs into durable product systems, including onboarding and activation flows, guidance and education, analytics and insights, site customization, publisher tooling, and platform capabilities that help creators build sustainable businesses on Substack.
What You’ll Do
Define the product strategy for creators across the full lifecycle, from first launch and activation to growth, monetization, customization, and enterprise-scale publishing
Build the systems, tooling, analytics, and platform primitives that help creators of every size succeed on Substack
Translate creator insights, enterprise partner needs, and company strategy into clear roadmaps, product requirements, and shipped work
Partner closely with Engineering, Design, Data, Partnerships, and Sponsorships teams to onboard creators, support major publishers, and turn bespoke needs into scalable product capabilities
Define the metrics, dashboards, experiments, and feedback loops that help the company understand creator progress and product impact
Own product storytelling and go-to-market strategy for creator-facing launches, clearly communicating what changed, why it matters, and how creators benefit
What We’re Looking For
6+ years of Product Management experience, ideally in creator, growth, platform, marketplace, media, or publisher-facing products
Strong creator empathy and a deep understanding of how creators build audiences, monetize, and evaluate platforms
Excellent product judgment, with the ability to balance simplicity, flexibility, and power across very different creator segments
Strong analytical skills, including experience defining metrics, using BI tools, running experiments, and applying cohort or growth analysis
Ability to translate bespoke partner or enterprise needs into reusable systems and platform primitives
Strong communication skills, including strategy writing, launch storytelling, and executive-level presentation
Comfort operating from high-level product strategy down to detailed UX, copy, and execution decisions
An ability to roll up your sleeves and do what needs to be done
Why This Role, Why Now
Creators are arriving at Substack with higher expectations, more sophisticated needs, and more alternatives than ever. The biggest leverage in improving creator outcomes comes from building systems that help creators make progress at every stage: getting started, finding traction, growing an audience, understanding what’s working, customizing their presence, and scaling into durable publishing businesses.
This role exists to turn creator intent into momentum across the full lifecycle, building the onboarding systems, analytics, publisher tooling, customization capabilities, and platform primitives that help creators of every size succeed on Substack.
