Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
The Fleet Response team's mission is to accelerate the safe deployment of Waymo's autonomous technology. Fleet Response operates at the cutting edge of our autonomous driving operations. In certain highly ambiguous or complex situations, the Waymo Driver can request the assistance of human Fleet Response Operators (FROs) to provide extra context and information. Those operators use a web application to receive real-time video, audio, and other telemetry from the vehicle and provide guidance back to the Driver.
We are seeking a passionate engineer to develop Fleet Response’s mission-critical full-stack systems that make this real-time collaboration possible. You will work with a team of talented engineers to deliver reliable, globally-available, low-latency visualization and interaction — with a direct impact on Waymo’s autonomous fleet every single day.
You will:
Contribute to the end-to-end reliability and performance of mission-critical web applications used for real-time autonomous vehicle support.
Work on frontend and backend infrastructure, including robust APIs and seamless integration with upstream and downstream services.
Ensure the Fleet Response platform scales effectively to meet Waymo’s reliability, performance, and functionality requirements.
Advise and guide cross-functional engineers across Fleet Response and broader Waymo teams to ensure optimal utilization of web application systems
Partner closely with Waymo SRE to drive global scalability and maintain the high availability of mission-critical, real-time platforms.
You have:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field of study
4+ years of industry experience with web applications (frontend and backend).
Familiarity with web client architectures (Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, etc).
Enjoyment from working closely with your users.
A strong intrinsic motivation for reliability.
We prefer:
Experience bringing technical and non-technical groups together.
Experience with C++.
Experience building high-reliability distributed systems or RPC services.
An investigative mindset.
A track record of successful partnerships with SRE.

Define actionable follow-ups and track their implementation to continuously enhance safety, efficiency, and overall incident response capabilities for a distributed team, ensuring lessons learned are integrated back into processes.
Deliver executive-level communications - on active incidents and present comprehensive analyses of key outcomes, trends, and strategic learnings from past events.
You have:
7+ years of direct experience in incident management, having served as an Incident Commander or lead responder for high-severity, cross-functional incidents within a complex operational environment.
Proven technical expertise & cross-functional leadership, apply technical understanding of complex engineering systems to drive incident response, root cause analysis, and remediation for live operational incidents, coupled with an exceptional ability to build and align diverse stakeholders (e.g., Engineering, Legal, Operations) during critical events.
Demonstrated capability to remain calm and decisive under pressure, efficiently coordinating response efforts and making sound judgments in rapidly evolving, high-stakes situations.
Experience briefing senior executives and leadership, in real-time, on complex, fast-moving incidents, articulating technical details, impact, and proposed resolutions clearly and concisely across various communication channels.
Exceptional attention to detail with a track record of meticulously documenting incident timelines, contributing factors, and post-incident analysis to drive accurate reporting and continuous improvement. Willingness and ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, demonstrating flexibility to cover shifts as part of a global "follow the sun" incident response capability.
We prefer:
Advanced degree in a relevant field such as Emergency Management, Business, Operations, Law, or a related discipline, demonstrating a deeper theoretical understanding of incident dynamics and organizational response.

As a Staff Software Engineer (L6) on the Labeling Team, you will lead the technical strategy for automating our data pipelines. You will build cutting-edge auto-labeling systems to drastically scale our throughput and develop intelligent auto-graders to guarantee exceptional data quality. This is a high-impact leadership role where you will train, deploy, and orchestrate state-of-the-art computer vision architectures and Vision-Language Models (VLMs) to solve complex semantic labeling challenges across our massive autonomous driving fleet.
In this hybrid role, you will report to a Technical lead Manager, Staff Software Engineer.
You will:
Architect and Scale Auto-Labeling: Lead the design and deployment of highly scalable auto-labeling pipelines that significantly improve data throughput and reduce our reliance on manual annotation bottlenecks.
Build Robust Auto-Graders: Develop automated anomaly detection and quality evaluation systems (auto-graders) to assess annotation accuracy, detect regressions, and enforce rigorous quality standards across millions of labels.
Train & Deploy SOTA Computer Vision Models: Train, optimize, and push into production advanced 2D and 3D computer vision models. You will utilize architectures ranging from foundational zero-shot models like SAM (Segment Anything Model) and efficient real-time detectors like YOLO, to bespoke 3D perception and tracking models.
Leverage Vision-Language Models (VLMs): Fine-tune, and deploy large VLMs and LLMs, utilizing prompt optimization and advanced post-training techniques (SFT, RL, etc.), to solve complex, open-set labeling and contextual reasoning tasks.
Drive Technical Direction: Act as a technical pillar for the Labeling organization. Set the long-term ML strategy, guide architectural decisions, and mentor senior and mid-level engineers.
Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Perception, Planner, and Simulation teams to align labeling capabilities with the evolving ML data needs of the Waymo Driver.
You have:
8+ years of professional experience in the field of software engineering and applied machine learning
Experience programming in C++ or Python
Experience building, evaluating, and deploying deep learning models for object detection, segmentation, and spatial tracking
Experience in large model training, distributed computing, and scaling deep learning architectures using frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow
Experience taking machine learning solutions through the entire lifecycle—from research and experimentation to robust, scaled production deployment
We prefer:
Experience building internal tooling for ML developers
