Front is the customer operations platform built for B2B complexity, keeping every team, tool, and customer conversation in sync so companies can scale without losing connection. Others handle simple interactions. Front handles the coordination and context behind complex B2B customer relationships. Over 9,000 companies, including Uber Freight, Navan, and Stripe, rely on Front because it's the only one that can run the operational layer that makes customer-facing work actually succeed.
Backed by Sequoia Capital and Salesforce Ventures, Front has raised $204M from leading venture capital firms and independent investors including top executives at Atlassian, Okta, Qualtrics, Zoom, and PagerDuty. Front has received numerous Great Place to Work accolades, including Built In's 100 Best Midsize Places to Work in SF 2025 https://builtin.com/awards/san-francisco/2025/best-midsize-places-to-work?utm_campaign=bptw-2025&utm_content=article&utm_medium=website&utm_source=editorial, Top Places to Work by USA Today 2025 https://topworkplaces.com/company/front/, Y Combinator's list of Top Companies in 2023 https://www.ycombinator.com/topcompanies, #4 on Fortune’s Best Workplaces in the Bay Area™ https://www.greatplacetowork.com/best-workplaces/bay-area/2022?category=small-and-medium ,Inc. AI is transforming customer service at a pace the industry hasn’t seen before. Front is at the leading edge of that shift, with more than 9,000 companies worldwide, including CultureAmp, Hootsuite, and Y Combinator, already running their support operations on it.
We’re looking for a Senior Design Engineer to help close the gap between how Front is designed and how Front is built. Front has a mature, complex product surface with more than a decade of UI investment, a rich Figma library, and a large production codebase. This role is for someone who is equally comfortable in Figma and in frontend code, and who wants to turn design systems from static documentation into living, production-quality systems that help product teams move faster.
You’ll own the connective tissue between Design and Engineering: building reusable components, shaping design-system architecture, improving the fidelity between Figma and production, and creating the tooling, patterns, and practices that make high-quality UI easier to ship. You won’t just document the system — you’ll build it, ship it, evolve it, and help teams adopt it.
This is a hands-on senior IC role with high leverage across Product, Design, and Engineering. The right person brings strong frontend engineering judgment, excellent UI craft, deep design-systems experience, and the ability to influence teams without becoming a bottleneck.
What will you be doing?
- Own and evolve Front’s design system across Figma, Storybook, and production code, helping create a clearer source of truth between design and engineering.
- Build, refactor, and maintain reusable, accessible, well-documented UI components that product teams can confidently use across Front’s core surfaces.
- Identify and reduce design/code drift across our existing component libraries, legacy UI patterns, and evolving Figma system.
- Establish patterns, conventions, and guardrails that improve consistency, accessibility, maintainability, and developer experience.
- Prototype new interaction patterns and reference implementations in code to help teams align quickly and de-risk complex product decisions.
- Partner closely with Product Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers to define what “great” looks like for complex workflows, edge cases, and enterprise-grade product experiences.
- Use AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate prototyping, iteration, production changes, and system maintenance while applying strong judgment to the output.
What skills and experience do you need?
- 6+ years of experience designing and building production frontend experiences, ideally in complex B2B SaaS, enterprise software, developer tools, or similarly deep product domains.
- Strong frontend engineering skills with modern web technologies and component-based architecture. You do not need to have used Front’s exact stack, but you should be able to ramp quickly in a large, mature codebase.
- High UI/UX craft and strong product taste. You can evaluate whether an interface is not only visually polished, but also usable, accessible, flexible, and maintainable.
- Experience building or maintaining component libraries, Storybook documentation, visual regression workflows, design-token pipelines, Figma workflows/plugins, or similar design-engineering infrastructure.
- Strong accessibility fundamentals, including semantic HTML, ARIA patterns, keyboard interaction models, focus management, and inclusive component states.
- Strong communication skills. You can explain technical and design-system decisions clearly to both specialists and non-specialists.
- A portfolio or body of work showing shipped design-engineering impact: production UI, component systems, prototypes, Storybook examples, design-system documentation, or code-backed product work.
Bonus points
- Experience working on products with a large existing frontend surface area, multiple product teams, and a mature or evolving design system.
- Experience in customer support, customer operations, collaboration software, internal tools, developer tools, or other workflow-heavy SaaS products.
- Experience consolidating fragmented component libraries or aligning Figma libraries with production code.
- Experience using AI-assisted coding or design tools to accelerate prototyping, refactoring, and product iteration.
What you’ll bring to Front
- A systems mindset: you see patterns, edge cases, and long-term maintenance costs, not just individual screens.
- A high craft bar: you care about the last 10% of interaction detail, visual polish, accessibility, and usability.
- A builder’s bias: you prefer to make ideas real in code, learn from how they behave, and iterate quickly.
- A collaborative approach: you raise the quality of work around you by making the right path easier for other designers and engineers.
- Senior-level judgment: you can operate through ambiguity, prioritize high-leverage improvements, and sequence change in a way that teams can actually adopt
Front operates on a hybrid model — we come together in the office each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to collaborate and stay connected.

Front is a customer operations platform that helps teams work better together. At the core of everything we build is the Foundations team — the engineers who make it possible for the rest of engineering to move fast and build with confidence. This team owns the frameworks, libraries, and internal systems that power Front's backend, from our event-driven task queue to our CI/CD infrastructure and database ORM.
As a Software Engineer on the Foundations team, you'll work at the intersection of platform engineering and developer experience. You won't be building features end users click on — you'll be building the systems that make those features possible. If you're energized by designing for scale, eliminating friction across engineering teams, and setting the architectural patterns that an entire company relies on, this role is for you.
What will you be doing?
- Building and maintaining shared backend frameworks, libraries, and internal tooling used by engineering teams across Front
- Designing and implementing systems with a strong emphasis on reliability, observability, and performance — including our task queue, batch job framework, database ORM, and real-time event infrastructure
- Owning and evolving our CI/CD systems, ensuring fast, reliable, and safe delivery pipelines
- Collaborating closely with other engineering teams to understand their pain points, establish shared patterns, and drive adoption of new frameworks
- Influencing Front's backend architecture and the engineering-wide standards that flow from it
- Navigating ambiguity, defining the right problems to solve, and delivering solutions of significant complexity
What skills and experience do you need?
- We are looking for backend JavaScript/TypeScript engineers — this role is not focused on frontend development.
- Experience building frameworks, libraries, and/or developer-facing internal tools
- Experience building distributed systems with an emphasis on reliability, observability, and performance
- Exceptional software design fundamentals and a track record of delivering high-complexity projects
- Clear, structured thinking and strong communication skills — your stakeholders are other engineers, so the ability to explain technical tradeoffs matters
- Comfort navigating ambiguity: you can drive clarity and execute without a fully-defined roadmap
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative, low-ego, and high-growth environment
Bonus points:
- Deep TypeScript performance optimization experience
- Prior work on platform or enablement teams at a product-led company
Why is this role special?
You'll get exposure to a wide range of production systems — our task queue (event-driven architecture), database ORM, real-time events, CI/CD pipelines, and batch job framework
- You'll heavily influence Front's backend architecture and the patterns used by the entire engineering org
- Your primary stakeholders are other engineering teams — you're building for builders
- Your work has compounding impact: improvements you make ripple across every team shipping customer-facing features
Front operates on a hybrid model — we come together in the office each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to collaborate and stay connected.

Over 9,000 companies rely on Front to run their customer operations. AI is reshaping what's possible in this space, and Front is building the platform to deliver on that promise. At the center of this effort is our Core AI Platform team - a group of our strongest applied AI and engineering talent whose work underpins every AI-powered experience across the product. We're looking for an engineering leader to own this team and its outsized impact on Front's product and customers.
The Core AI Platform team is responsible for three things:
- Building and maintaining the foundational AI infrastructure (LLM integrations, RAG pipelines, evaluation systems) that all product teams at Front rely on
- Enabling product feature teams to ship AI-powered experiences quickly and reliably by providing well-abstracted, production-grade AI capabilities
- Pushing the frontier on AI techniques and tooling so Front stays ahead of the rapid pace of change in AI/ML
To be successful in this role, you will manage a team of senior AI engineers - both applied AI and full-stack AI specialists - to deliver on an ambitious technical roadmap. You will guide strategic AI investments by evaluating emerging techniques and directing effort toward the highest-impact bets. You will lean in on technical design and architecture, scale the team by attracting top AI talent, and drive the processes that let a platform team serve many product teams effectively. This is a highly collaborative role where you will partner closely with product managers, other engineering managers, and engineers across the organization.
What will you be doing?
- Own the technical roadmap for Front's AI platform, guiding strategic investments in AI by evaluating emerging techniques, making build-vs-buy decisions, and partnering with product and engineering leadership to prioritize the highest-leverage capabilities
- Drive architectural decisions on AI infrastructure - LLM orchestration, RAG systems, model evaluation, prompt management - ensuring reliability, scalability, and developer ergonomics
- Manage and grow a team of senior engineers, providing mentorship and career development while maintaining a high talent bar
- Define and improve the interfaces between the AI platform and product feature teams, enabling autonomous and efficient execution across the organization
- Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Front's engineering management team
What skills and experience do you need?
Must have -
- Deep technical fluency in AI/ML systems, particularly LLM-based applications, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs and guide architectural decisions alongside senior engineers
- Track record of managing and scaling a team of senior/staff engineers through ambiguous, fast-moving problem spaces
- Proven ability to guide strategic AI investments - evaluating emerging techniques, making build-vs-buy decisions, and directing team effort toward the highest-impact bets in a rapidly evolving space
Should have -
- Strong cross-functional partnership skills to align AI platform capabilities with product needs across multiple teams
- Ability to attract, develop, and retain top AI engineering talent in a competitive market
- Experience building and operating AI/ML infrastructure or platform services in production at scale
Nice to have -
- Founded or built a new team/function/capability from early stages
- Experience at a B2B SaaS company applying AI to enterprise workflows
- Background in developer experience or internal platform work that accelerated other engineering teams
