We're looking for someone equally comfortable whiteboarding API architecture with a prospect's engineering team as they are building the business case with a Chief Compliance Officer.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Own the technical win by partnering with Account Executives throughout the sales cycle—leading technical discovery, qualifying requirements, and driving deals to close by removing technical objections and building champion confidence.
- Run discovery and solution design by understanding each prospect's onboarding workflows, risk and compliance requirements, and technical environment, then mapping those needs to Middesk's APIs, data products, and verification workflows.
- Deliver compelling demos and presentations by tailoring product demonstrations to each audience—from hands-on API walkthroughs for engineers to business-impact narratives for risk, compliance, and executive stakeholders.
- Lead technical evaluations and proofs of concept by scoping success criteria, supporting prospects through sandbox testing and data evaluations, and translating results into a clear case for Middesk.
- Design integration architectures by advising prospects on scalable, resilient implementation approaches that fit their compliance, risk, and operational needs, especially in high-volume or regulated environments.
- Handle technical diligence by owning responses to RFPs, security questionnaires, and technical deep-dives, and coordinating with internal teams on complex requirements.
- Ensure a clean handoff to post-sales by documenting solution designs, requirements, and commitments so implementation teams can take new customers to production quickly and without surprises.
- Champion the voice of the prospect internally by synthesizing feedback, feature gaps, and competitive intelligence, and collaborating with Product, Engineering, and Marketing to sharpen our roadmap and positioning.
WHO YOU ARE:

ABOUT THE ROLE:
We're hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE): a deeply technical builder and technical leader who thrives at the intersection of engineering, product, and real customer problems.
You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with customers and internal product and engineering teams to design, ship, and iterate on mission-critical integrations and AI-driven systems that run in production. You'll write real code, own complex deployments end-to-end, and help shape how these systems are built across Middesk. Forward Deployed Engineers close the gap between product intent and real-world usage—acting as a tight feedback loop that shapes both how our product is used and what it becomes.
You will act as a technical leader, helping set direction, influence architecture, and establish best practices for how we deploy and operate systems in the real world.
This role is ideal for a recovering founder, a former core engineer who misses direct customer impact, or someone who thrives on ownership and wants to build real systems where the feedback loop is immediate.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Own Technical Direction for Deployments
- Lead architecture and technical design for complex, customer-facing systems and integrations.
- Make and communicate clear trade-offs across speed, reliability, and scalability.
- Identify systemic risks and drive improvements across deployments, not just one-off solutions.

Build & Deploy Real Systems
- Partner deeply with strategic customers to understand their architecture, workflows, and constraints.
- Design, build, and deploy production-grade integrations using Middesk APIs, data pipelines, and AI workflows.
- Own deployments end-to-end: from architecture and implementation to rollout, monitoring, and iteration. Deployment quality matters—we operate in the critical path of customer systems.
- Solve ambiguous, high-impact problems that don't yet have established playbooks.
AI, Agents & Evaluation
- Build and operate LLM- and agent-based systems in real customer workflows.
- Design and maintain evaluation frameworks (evals) to measure quality, reliability, and correctness of LLM outputs and agent behavior.
- Create test harnesses, metrics, and feedback loops to continuously improve AI-driven systems.
- Feel comfortable running multiple coding agents or automated workflows in parallel, debugging failures, and reasoning about system behavior.
Influence Product & Engineering Direction
- Translate deployment learnings into reusable abstractions, internal tooling, and product improvements.
- Influence roadmap priorities by surfacing recurring patterns, technical gaps, and opportunities for leverage.
- Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to org-wide technical decisions.
- We believe engineering velocity is only valuable if it delivers customer value—your role is to make sure it does.
Lead & Raise the Bar
- Lead through influence, not authority—setting a high standard for engineering quality and pragmatism in a high-ownership, high-trust environment.
- Guide engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on collaboration.
- Enjoy real autonomy, direct influence on product direction, and deep technical problems with real-world impact.
- Work with a team that values thoughtful engineering over performative process.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
Core Requirements
- 6+ years of experience building and shipping software in production environments.
- Demonstrated experience acting as a technical lead or domain owner for a team or major system.
- Strong proficiency in Python and at least one additional language (TypeScript, Go, etc.).
- Experience designing and operating distributed systems, APIs, and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Comfort operating across the stack: backend systems, integrations, infrastructure, and tooling.
- Strong debugging instincts and an ownership mindset—you care deeply about failure modes, not just happy paths.
- Strong communication skills—able to articulate trade-offs clearly to engineers, product, and non-technical stakeholders.
AI / LLM Experience (Strong Plus)
- Hands-on experience building or deploying LLM-powered or agent-based systems.
- Familiarity with LLM evaluation techniques (evals) and performance measurement.
- Experience orchestrating automated workflows, agents, or developer tooling powered by AI.
- Clear understanding of failure modes and tradeoffs in applied AI systems.
Customer & Domain Experience
- Experience working in startup environments with high ambiguity and rapid iteration.
- Background in fintech, compliance, or regulated systems where correctness and data quality matter.
- Comfortable working directly with customers on complex technical problems.
NICE-TO-HAVE:
- Former founder or early startup engineer.
- Experience with identity systems, risk/fraud, or workflow automation.
- Familiarity with observability, reliability engineering, or system safety practices.

ABOUT MIDDESK:
Middesk is building the data and intelligence infrastructure that helps businesses work together with confidence. We started by creating a comprehensive platform for understanding businesses, bringing together authoritative and proprietary data to help customers verify business identities, onboard customers faster, and manage risk throughout the customer lifecycle.
Today, Middesk is used by more than 700 banks and fintechs, and in 2025 we verified more than 7 million companies. We've also expanded beyond business verification to help companies form, register, manage, and maintain their businesses, supporting more than 50,000 companies in setting up over 100,000 accounts required to hire employees, run payroll, and stay compliant.
Middesk came out of Y Combinator, and is backed by Sequoia Capital, Accel, Insight Partners, and Canapi. We're proud to be named on the Forbes Fintech 50 and Best Startup Employers lists.
ABOUT MIDDESK ENGINEERING:
"Velocity" is the rate at which we effect realized value for our customers, not the rate at which we ship code. We believe that great products result when technical excellence and craft is combined with deep understanding of our customers and the problems we can help them solve. We're a humble, self-motivated team that seeks to ship early and ship often; we pride ourselves with being willing to roll up our sleeves to solve even the messiest problems our customers present to us. Middesk Engineering is customer-first engineering.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
We’re looking for an engineer who wants real ownership early: someone independent, curious, and pragmatic, with strong systems instincts and good judgment.
You’ll work across reliability, security, automation, cost, developer experience, and internal platforms. A growing part of the role is building the systems underneath how AI is changing work at Middesk: the infrastructure that lets people and agents collaborate safely, ship faster, and operate with more leverage.
We don’t expect someone to have seen every tool before. We do expect them to learn quickly, care about the details, and take responsibility for systems that matter.
We follow a hybrid work model, and for this role, there is an expectation of 2 days per week in our SF office. Candidates should be based within a commutable distance of San Francisco — this role is built around close, in-person collaboration and mentorship with the team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Design, build, and scale cloud infrastructure and orchestration systems, including Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD, with support from senior engineers who are invested in your growth.
- Own and evolve developer experience (DevEx) tools and workflows, from local development to deployment.
- Build observability systems that provide insight into performance, reliability, and usage.
- Improve the reliability of our production systems through safer deploys, automated rollback, failover, and platform hardening.
- Collaborate with Data Scientists, Data Platform and Product Engineers to build shared platform tools necessary to scale our products and services.
- Help enforce and maintain security and compliance standards across infrastructure (SOC 2, FedRAMP, etc).
- Drive a culture of automation, resiliency, and operational excellence.
- Build the infrastructure underneath how AI is changing work at Middesk, including systems that let engineers, operators, and agents collaborate safely and effectively.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
- 3+ years of experience as a software engineer, with genuine interest in infrastructure, platform, or systems work – you don't need to have done this exact job before, but you need to want it.
- Strong technical fundamentals: a deep, careful understanding of how systems actually work. This is work you can't vibe-code your way through.
- A fast learner who is reliable, humble, and excited to absorb everything from experienced teammates.
- Comfort with (or excitement about) work that isn't customer-facing – the impact here is deep, not loud.
NICE-TO-HAVE:
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, high-availability systems, production infrastructure, or infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g. Terraform) and GitOps workflows — none of this is required, you'll learn our stack here.
- Experience building internal platforms, developer tools, automation systems, or AI-enabled engineering workflows.
- Experience in a fast-moving startup or another environment where engineers own broad surfaces and learn quickly.
