Hardware Platform Security Architect
Software Engineer, Enterprise Verticals
About the Team
Enterprise Verticals builds role-specific ChatGPT Work experiences for high-value enterprise workflows. We combine product engineering, plugins and skills, connectors, data, evaluations, and customer evidence to turn useful demos into reliable daily work.
This opening sits within the Technology vertical inside Enterprise Verticals. The group focuses on repeatable workflows for people at technology companies, beginning with functions such as data and analytics, sales, and design, and carries the shared platform needs—tool integration, permissions, quality measurement, and safe rollout—across those experiences.
We work closely with Design, Research, GTM, Security, and platform teams, as well as with customers and design partners. Success means that people can reach a trustworthy first result, understand what the system did, and keep using the workflow—not merely that a prototype exists.
About the Role
We are looking for a full-stack product engineer who can own ambiguous enterprise workflows end to end: understand a customer problem, shape the product, build across frontend and backend, work through platform dependencies, instrument quality, and learn quickly with design partners.
You will build across ChatGPT Work surfaces, services, plugins, connectors, and data or permission boundaries when the experience requires it. You will make quality and rollout observable through evaluations, product and operational signals, and clear fallback or rollback paths.
This is a product-engineering role for someone who can move between user problems and system details without losing ownership of either. The strongest candidates will be able to turn specific customer evidence into a generalizable product, explain scope and architecture tradeoffs, and carry a feature from an early prototype through a bounded production rollout.
In this role, you will:
Build and ship role-specific workflows across ChatGPT Work surfaces, services, plugins, and connectors.
Turn customer and design-partner evidence into clear product decisions, milestones, and measurable quality gates without overfitting to a single customer.
Partner with Design, Research, GTM, Security, and platform teams.
Create robust evaluations, observability, and rollback paths.
Own the full loop from prototype through bounded rollout and iteration.
Define explicit contracts and fallback paths with shared platform teams when a workflow depends on connectors, permissions, model routing, or other cross-team systems.
You might thrive in this role if:
You are a strong product engineer with excellent product judgment.
You are comfortable moving across frontend, backend, APIs, data, and systems integration.
You communicate clearly with customers and cross-functional partners.
You use evidence and tests to make ambiguous work observable.
You care about enterprise permissions, reliability, privacy, and rollout safety.
You have shipped a user-facing product through ambiguity and can explain the decisions, tradeoffs, and evidence behind it.
You can translate a concrete customer workflow into a general product without losing the details that make the first experience useful.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience building and operating full-stack production products across a modern frontend stack (such as React/TypeScript) and backend services (such as Python, Go, Node.js, or comparable technologies).
Experience designing evolvable APIs, data models, and distributed or integration-heavy systems, including authentication, identity, permissions, secure data flows, and partial-failure behavior.
Experience owning production systems at scale, including observability, performance, testing, incident response, safe migrations, staged rollout, and rollback.
Experience building applied-AI or conversational products and evaluating probabilistic behavior with grounding, quality signals, and human-feedback loops.
Experience building dashboards, data visualizations, or workflow and insight products that make complex information understandable and actionable.
Familiarity with experimentation, product metrics, and iterative development, including instrumenting user outcomes from first use through retained usage.

About the Team
This team builds and operates the systems that enable OpenAI researchers to run reliable, scalable, and efficient research workflows. The team sits close to research and works across infrastructure, systems, and automation to make sure researchers have the tools and environments they need to move quickly.
The work spans software engineering, infrastructure, systems administration, cluster operations, and reliability engineering. As OpenAI’s infrastructure evolves from bespoke bare-metal systems toward more standard, scalable platforms, the team needs engineers who can understand how systems work end-to-end and build the right abstractions without reinventing the wheel.
About the Role
As a Software Engineer on this team, you will build and operate the infrastructure that supports frontier research and critical research-facing systems. You will work on systems that sit close to the metal, but the role is not limited to classic operations or sysadmin work. We are looking for someone who can reason about networking, bootstrapping, Kubernetes, scalability, automation, and reliability - while also writing software to make these systems better over time.
This role is a strong fit for an independent, high-ownership engineer who enjoys reliability-heavy infrastructure work but still wants to build. You do not need to come in as a kernel expert or highly algorithmic optimization engineer, but you should be deeply curious about infrastructure, comfortable debugging complex systems, and excited to support researchers doing novel work.
We expect you to:
Build and operate reliable infrastructure for research workloads and research-facing services.
Support and improve systems across data infrastructure, processing, crawl and ingest, caching, search, observability, and clusterwide services.
Improve cluster bootstrapping, provisioning, automation, and deployment workflows.
Debug issues across networking, compute, storage, orchestration, and service reliability layers.
Build software and automation that reduce manual operational work and improve system reliability.
Partner closely with researchers, infrastructure engineers, and service owners to understand system needs and translate them into durable solutions.
Help evolve existing infrastructure toward more scalable, maintainable, and standard patterns.
Take ownership of critical systems and drive work independently from problem definition through execution.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have strong systems fundamentals and understand how infrastructure scales in practice.
Are comfortable with Linux, networking, Kubernetes, provisioning, and distributed systems operations.
Can write software to automate, debug, and improve infrastructure systems.
Have a strong execution mindset and can independently drive ambiguous infrastructure work.
Enjoy supporting a wide surface area of systems, from research tooling to platform services.
Are pragmatic about when to build custom systems versus using existing, well-supported tools.
Care about building reliable systems that make researchers faster and reduce operational friction.
Nice to have:
Experience with PXE boot, cluster provisioning, bare-metal infrastructure, or large-scale fleet management.
Experience operating Kubernetes or similar orchestration systems at scale.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, observability, or deployment automation.
Experience supporting search infrastructure, data platforms, ingest systems, or large-scale research workflows.
Experience with Git-based workflows and internal developer tooling.
Prior experience in environments where reliability, scale, and speed all matter.
