The Nuclear Fuel Development Engineer supports Standard Nuclear’s fuel development and manufacturing programs by contributing to process development, fuel material fabrication, characterization, testing, and technical documentation. This role works across engineering, laboratory, and manufacturing environments to help develop reliable processes for advanced nuclear fuel production.
This is a hands-on technical role suited for an early-career engineer with experience or strong interest in nuclear fuels, materials processing, chemical processing, ceramics, powders, or fuel fabrication. The Nuclear Fuel Development Engineer will support experimental planning, process execution, data analysis, and transition of development activities into repeatable manufacturing practices.
The role requires strong technical fundamentals, disciplined documentation, and the ability to work closely with fuel development, manufacturing, characterization, quality, EH&S, radiological controls, and licensing teams in a regulated nuclear fuel fabrication environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Fuel Development & Process Engineering
Support development and optimization of nuclear fuel fabrication processes
Assist with planning and execution of experiments, process trials, and technical demonstrations
Evaluate process parameters, operating conditions, and material behavior to improve repeatability and product consistency
Support scale-up of fuel development activities from laboratory or pilot work into manufacturing workflows
Help identify process limitations, sources of variation, and opportunities for yield or throughput improvement
Materials Processing & Fabrication Support
Support hands-on work involving nuclear fuel materials, powders, ceramics, chemical processing, thermal processing, and related fabrication steps
Assist with preparation, handling, movement, and tracking of materials in accordance with approved procedures
Work with technicians and operators to support equipment setup, process readiness, and production execution
Help troubleshoot process issues, equipment limitations, and material performance concerns
Support development of tooling, fixtures, work instructions, and process documentation as needed
Characterization, Testing & Data Analysis
Coordinate with characterization and quality teams to evaluate material properties, product attributes, and process results
Review and analyze data from process runs, inspections, measurements, and characterization activities
Use data to identify trends, assess process performance, and support technical decision-making
Prepare technical summaries, test reports, process records, and data packages
Support root cause investigations and corrective actions related to material or process deviations
Manufacturing & Cross-Functional Integration
Work closely with manufacturing, quality, characterization, EH&S, radiological controls, licensing, and supply chain teams
Ensure development activities are planned and executed with safety, quality, traceability, and manufacturability in mind
Support development of process flows, material movement plans, and manufacturing readiness activities
Help translate engineering requirements into practical production methods and procedures
Communicate technical status, risks, and results clearly to project and technical stakeholders
Documentation, Quality & Compliance
Develop and maintain technical documentation including procedures, work instructions, test plans, process records, and reports
Ensure work is documented clearly, accurately, and in accordance with company requirements
Support audit readiness, configuration control, and traceability of fuel development activities
Follow applicable safety, radiological, quality, and environmental requirements
Support continuous improvement of procedures, workflows, and technical practices as programs mature
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline
3–4 years of experience in nuclear fuels, materials processing, chemical processing, ceramics, powders, fuel fabrication, or related technical work preferred
Hands-on experience in laboratory, pilot, manufacturing, or regulated technical environments
Familiarity with nuclear fuel fabrication, fuel materials, uranium processing, ceramic processing, powder handling, thermal processing, or advanced materials manufacturing is preferred
Experience supporting process development, experimental execution, process troubleshooting, or manufacturing scale-up
Ability to analyze technical data and develop clear conclusions from process, test, or characterization results
Strong technical writing skills and experience preparing procedures, test plans, reports, or controlled documentation
Ability to work cross-functionally with engineers, scientists, technicians, operators, quality personnel, and safety teams
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety, quality, and procedural compliance
Experience in nuclear, DOE, NRC, national laboratory, aerospace, defense, chemical processing, energy, or other regulated environments is a plus

This role is based on-site at Standard Nuclear’s Idaho nuclear fuel fabrication facility and involves work across office, laboratory, manufacturing, and controlled environments.

The Quality Engineer supports Standard Nuclear’s quality management system by ensuring manufacturing processes, materials, and products meet internal and regulatory quality standards. This role works closely with manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain teams to implement quality controls, investigate nonconformances, and drive continuous improvement across production operations.
This is a hands-on engineering role within a regulated manufacturing environment. The Quality Engineer supports inspection and verification activities while leading root cause analysis, corrective actions, and process improvements to strengthen product quality and operational reliability. The role contributes to maintaining compliance with NQA-1 and other applicable regulatory and industry quality standards while helping scale manufacturing operations safely and efficiently.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Quality Engineering & Process Improvement
Develop and implement quality controls to ensure manufacturing processes consistently meet product specifications and regulatory requirements.
Lead root cause investigations for nonconformances, process deviations, and quality events.
Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and verify effectiveness.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen manufacturing quality, reliability, and efficiency.
Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to improve processes, documentation, and inspection methods.
Support new product introduction and process development by integrating quality requirements into production workflows.
Inspection & Verification
Support receiving, in-process, and final inspections of materials, components, and assemblies.
Verify that manufacturing work is performed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and procedures.
Review inspection results and evaluate nonconformances for disposition.
Support calibration and maintenance of inspection tools and measuring equipment.
Supplier Quality & Material Verification
Assist with supplier quality activities including review of material certifications, inspection reports, and supplier documentation.
Support supplier qualification, evaluation, and corrective action activities.
Coordinate with procurement and engineering teams to ensure supplied materials meet technical and quality requirements.
Quality Systems & Documentation
Maintain quality documentation, inspection records, and traceability in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
Support document control programs and ensure procedures, forms, and work instructions remain current.
Assist with development and improvement of quality procedures and manufacturing documentation.
Audits & Regulatory Compliance
Support internal audits, external audits, and quality system assessments.
Participate in corrective action reviews and follow-up verification.
Help maintain compliance with NQA-1 quality requirements and applicable DOE and NRC regulatory frameworks.
Support audit readiness and quality program implementation as manufacturing operations scale.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
3+ years of experience in quality engineering, quality assurance, or manufacturing engineering within an industrial or regulated manufacturing environment.
Experience working with quality systems such as NQA-1, ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar regulated standards.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
Experience performing root cause analysis using structured methods such as 5 Whys, Fishbone, or similar tools.
Hands-on experience with inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, or other measurement equipment.
Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain teams.
Experience working in nuclear, aerospace, defense, energy, or other regulated industries is a plus.

The Licensing Engineer supports the development and execution of licensing activities for Standard Nuclear’s fuel fabrication and transportation programs. This role focuses on authoring and reviewing technical documentation, supporting safety analyses, and ensuring alignment between engineering design and regulatory requirements.
This is a technically focused role within the licensing organization, intended for an engineer who can contribute immediately to project deliverables while developing deeper expertise in nuclear licensing. The position works closely with engineering, operations, and project teams to translate technical designs and processes into compliant, high-quality licensing documentation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Documentation & Analysis
Author and review technical documents including design criteria, functional requirements, purchase specifications, operating procedures, materials evaluation reports, code reconciliations, and similar technical work scopes
Develop and support Safety Analysis Reports (SARs) and associated technical sections Ensure technical accuracy, clarity, and regulatory alignment of all documentation
Licensing & Regulatory Support
Support licensing activities related to NRC regulations, including 10 CFR Part 71 (Packaging and Transportation of Radioactive Material)and 10 CFR Part 70 (Domestic Licensing of Special Nuclear Material) as applicable
Review engineering, design, and fabrication drawings for licensing compliance
Assist in preparation of regulatory submittals and responses to regulatory inquiries
As required assist in hazard identification, accident sequence evaluation, and identification of Items Relied on for Safety (IROFS)
Perform regulatory gap analysis and regulatory comparison evaluations
Support development of licensing strategies and documentation packages
Engineering Integration
Work closely with engineering teams to understand system designs, materials, and processes
Ensure licensing requirements are incorporated into design, fabrication, and testing activities
Support evaluation of design changes for licensing impact
Project & Cross-Functional Support
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineering, quality, operations, and project management
Support project execution by contributing to work scopes, schedules, and technical deliverables
Assist in tracking and coordinating licensing deliverables across projects
Professional Development
Develop subject matter expertise in nuclear licensing, regulatory frameworks, and safety analysis
Build familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code
Contribute to continuous improvement of licensing processes and documentation quality
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field
3–5 years of experience in a technical engineering role within a regulated or industrial environment
Strong technical writing skills with experience developing engineering documentation
Familiarity with NRC regulations (Part 71 preferred; Part 70 a plus)
Equivalent licensing experience under Department of Energy (DOE) regulations will also be considered (i.e. DOE-STD-3009, Preparation of Nonreactor Nuclear Facility Documented Safety Analysis)
Experience with fabrication, materials testing, or mechanical systems is a plus
Experience with Integrated Safety Analyses (ISA) development activities and document development in accordance with Part 70
Experience with various types of radioactive material packaging is a plus
Experience or familiarity with full scale or scale model testing is a plus
Familiarity with pressure vessel design and fabrication is a plus
Working knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code is preferred
Familiarity with source terms and containment analysis is a plus
Experience with defining allowable leakage and establishing leak rate criteria is a plus
Familiarity with leakage testing methods and procedures is a plus
Familiarity with international regulations addressing safe transport of radioactive materials, IAEA SSR-6, ADR, RID, ICAO, IATA and/or IMDG, is a plus
Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

This role is based in Oak Ridge, TN and involves regular work in manufacturing, laboratory, office, and industrial environments.
