QUICK SUMMARY
Own Kin’s eastern region pricing strategy, lead a team of state managers, and drive the data and risk decisions that keep our portfolio growing profitably.
WHO WE ARE
Kin makes life simpler, more affordable, and better for homeowners — especially in the places where climate risks, rising costs, and outdated systems make it hardest. We start with smarter homeowners insurance and expand to everything homeowners need to thrive.

Our disciplined growth, strong customer satisfaction, and focus on long-term sustainability fosters outstanding growth, attracts marquee investors, and earns recognition and accolades, including:
- Built In Chicago’s Best Places to Work, Midsize Companies (2021-2026)
- Forbes’ America’s Best Startup Employers (2026)

THE OPPORTUNITY
We’re looking for a Pricing & Risk Director to own the strategic direction of Kin’s eastern region — leading a team of state managers and setting the pricing and risk frameworks that drive sustainable, profitable growth across our most complex markets.
This role exists at a pivotal moment. As Kin continues to expand into new states and deepen its presence in high-risk markets, we need a director who can move with speed and precision — someone who brings both the analytical depth to make smart pricing decisions and the leadership presence to align teams, influence executives, and navigate a demanding regulatory environment. You’ll need the ability to synthesize ambiguous, multi-variable situations into clear strategic direction — not just execute established frameworks but build new ones as conditions evolve. If you’re energized by high-stakes problems, thrive in data-rich environments, and want to build something that actually matters for homeowners, this is the role for you.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own end-to-end P&L for the eastern region, driving rate strategy, loss ratio targets, and expense management to deliver sustainable profitability
- Lead, develop, and set clear performance expectations for a team of two state managers, ensuring consistent, high-quality execution across the region
- Define and continuously refine pricing strategies and risk frameworks for eastern states, translating complex data into actionable decisions that strengthen competitive positioning
- Present pricing and risk insights to executive leadership and regulatory bodies, clearly articulating trade-offs and strategic recommendations with confidence
- Build and maintain regional dashboards and risk KPIs that give leadership real-time visibility into portfolio performance
- Own regulatory modeling and compliance strategy for the eastern region, proactively navigating evolving requirements to protect market access
- Apply AI and data tools to surface emerging risk patterns, improve pricing accuracy, and sharpen the team’s analytical output
- Drive a continuous state optimization discipline across the eastern region — treating profitability, growth, and competitive positioning as always-in-progress workstreams rather than periodic initiatives
- Lead cross-functional problem solving on complex regional challenges, bringing together pricing, actuarial, product, and operations to drive aligned outcomes
SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE
In your first 6–12 months at Kin, success is less about checking boxes and more about the impact you create. You’ll use your skills and judgment to take ownership of meaningful work, improve how we operate, and help move Kin’s mission forward. Along the way, you’ll deliver outcomes that make a real difference for both Kinfolk and the homeowners we serve.
By the end of your first year, you should feel confident in your role, trusted as an owner, and proud of the progress you’ve helped make.
- The eastern region has a clear, well-understood pricing and risk roadmap that the team and executive stakeholders are aligned on and actively executing against
- State managers are operating with greater clarity, accountability, and independence — spending less time on escalations and more time driving results in their markets
- Executive leadership is relying on eastern region data and insights to inform high-stakes business decisions with confidence
- Regulatory interactions in eastern states are proactive, well-supported, and no longer reactive — reducing risk and strengthening Kin’s standing in key markets
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- 10+ years of pricing, risk, actuarial, or advanced analytics experience, with at least 7 years carrying direct P&L or regional business ownership
- Proven track record leading a pricing, risk, or analytics function with full accountability for strategy, team performance, and business outcomes
- Experience managing state- or regional-level budgets and headcount, with a demonstrated ability to hit financial targets
- Deep expertise building and interpreting executive dashboards, risk KPIs, and performance reporting that inform real decisions — not just reporting
- Demonstrated ability to navigate complex, multi-state regulatory environments and translate compliance requirements into actionable strategy
- Comfort using AI and data tools to enhance analytical workflows, identify risk patterns, and inform pricing decisions — you don’t need to build the models, but you know how to use what’s in front of you
- Strong presence with executive leadership and external stakeholders — you can translate complex trade-offs into clear, confident narratives
- Demonstrated ability to triage competing priorities across a complex portfolio, making clear calls on where to focus team resources for maximum impact
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, evolving environment where priorities shift and the ability to adapt quickly is as important as technical depth
- Track record of developing direct reports and building a team culture rooted in accountability, curiosity, and continuous improvement
HOW WE HIRE
We believe a great hiring experience should be clear, respectful, and human. We will accept applications for this position until August 17th, 2025. While our recruiting team uses AI tools for efficiency, resumes are still screened by Kin’s in-house recruiters, and candidate evaluations and hiring decisions are made by recruiters and hiring teams. Rest assured, real people make real decisions.
The hiring process and timeline for each role will vary, depending on the position. However, here are some things you can expect from us:
- Prompt updates and feedback following interviews
- Interviews with recruiters, hiring managers, and members of teams
- Skills assessment relevant to the position, if applicable

HOW WE WORK
We don’t just hire for skills. We hire for alignment. Kinfolk bring diverse perspectives, but we’re united by a shared set of values that shape how we work and how we show up for each other and our customers.
Run through walls, together - Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. We assume the best in each other and challenge ideas, not intentions. We show up, work hard, and play to each other's strengths — because that’s how great teams win.
Raise the bar. Drop the ego - Attitudes are contagious. Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. Like professional sports teams, we win by working in sync. We show up, work hard, and play to each other’s strengths.
Act like an owner - We are owners, fully accountable for achieving Kin’s mission. That requires positive, proactive, big-picture thinking well beyond our job descriptions. Ask questions, Take ownership. Do the right thing, even when it‘s hard. Because when Kin thrives, so do you. And so do our customers.
Operate lean. Deliver more - We build efficiency into everything we do. Each dollar we save gets reinvested to deliver more to our customers: better pricing, more products, and new innovations. We work smarter by relentlessly prioritizing and using technology, including AI, to multiply our impact. Lean is about focus, not deprivation. Lean isn't a limitation — it's our competitive advantage.
Keep asking ‘What if?’ - We value curiosity. To make insurance better for our customers, we experiment. We embrace insights. And we base decisions on data rather than assumptions. We see setbacks as opportunities for growth and are always learning and improving. Both individually and as a company.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Kin's long-term vision is to become the most trusted platform for homeownership -- a connected ecosystem of insurance, financing, home intelligence, and services that feels like one product, not a collection of handoffs. Every new thing we build has to feel like Kin. The Principal Product Designer role exists to make that possible.
In the past six months, Kin has launched auto insurance, flood insurance, property tax protests, home financing, and more. Every one of those products has to feel cohesive. Right now, our design system is a collection of disconnected branches that limits what the team can build and consumes hours that should go toward craft and personality. This role exists to solve that. You'll own the token layer, establish Figma-to-code parity, define the contribution model, and make the system the easiest path to a consistent experience — across everything we build next.
This is a principal-level IC role. You'll work across a federated, domain-based org and drive adoption through influence. The work you do here has direct implications for how Kin scales — and as AI makes it cheap to ship something that just works, the way our products feel to use is increasingly the thing that sets us apart.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Using AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor), audit existing component libraries and live product experiences — mapping gaps, drift, and inconsistencies — to generate a data-backed plan to unify and streamline the system.
- Own and drive Kin's token architecture across color, typography, spacing, and motion, structured as primitive, semantic, and component tokens, as the single source of truth for design and code.
- Experience designing token systems that scale across different contexts -- internal tools, customer-facing apps, or multi-brand surfaces -- with an architecture that can flex without fragmenting.
- Establish and maintain Figma-to-code parity, partnering with engineering on the pipeline from design tokens to implemented, documented components.
- Introduce new components and patterns thoughtfully as Kin moves into new product domains, ensuring the system grows with intention rather than sprawl.
- Define the contribution model and governance — versioning, changelogs, intake, and quality bars — and implement automated guardrails that let teams extend the system without fragmentation.
- Build the single source of truth that replaces disparate tools as the canonical reference for Kin's design patterns.
- Advocate for accessibility in components so teams inherit it by default, using automated testing and AI-assisted audits to proactively identify compliance gaps.
- Partner across Product, Engineering, and embedded domain designers to make the system the easiest path to a cohesive, on-brand experience across every surface.
- AI and people can both generate Kin-consistent visual design from one source of truth, with the token layer as its foundation.
- Engineering and design are aligned on a shared token structure, with a clear rollout approach for updating shared components without breaking downstream consumers.
- The contribution and governance model is documented, adopted, and holding — teams know how to request from and extend the system without routing around it.
- New product surfaces launching at Kin inherit consistency by default, rather than requiring design rework to bring them into compliance.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- A track record of taking a design system from audit through architecture to adoption — you treat the system as a product, not a deliverable.
- Significant visual and product design experience, commonly 7+ years, with a meaningful stretch focused specifically on design systems work.
- Deep fluency in token architecture (primitive / semantic / component) and mastery of Figma as a systems tool — variables, libraries, and modes.
- Proven ability to leverage AI tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) to accelerate manual tasks, automate documentation, and speed up the design-to-code feedback loop.
- The ability to influence without authority — you set direction and bring partners along across a federated org without relying on positional power.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and 0-to-1 spaces, where the structure doesn't exist yet and you're the one building it.
Bonus if you have:
- Experience in insurance, fintech, or other complex, regulated, high-consideration product domains.
- Familiarity with the design-to-code toolchain — Storybook/Chromatic, a token transformer like Style Dictionary, and how tokens land in a real front-end stack (Angular, Rails, etc.).
- Comfort reading or contributing to component code.
HOW WE HIRE

Why are you being asked to complete this form?
We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Pie's mission is to empower small businesses to thrive by making commercial insurance affordable and as easy as pie. We leverage technology to transform how small businesses buy and experience commercial insurance.
Like our small business customers, we are a diverse team of builders, dreamers, and entrepreneurs who are driven by core values and operating principles that guide every decision we make.
The Senior Manager, Underwriting is the operational leader of the New Business Underwriting team, responsible for translating strategic direction from the Director of New Business Underwriting into day-to-day execution. This role owns team performance, service delivery, and underwriter development — ensuring the team operates with consistency, quality, and efficiency. The Senior Manager is a seasoned underwriting professional whose technical expertise is sought out by team members, and who can make sound, independent decisions in complex or ambiguous situations without waiting for direction.
How You’ll Do It
Lead Day-to-Day Underwriting Operations
Own team adherence to service levels, underwriting guidelines, and quality standards; proactively surface and resolve operational bottlenecks before they escalate.
Serve as the primary internal escalation point for complex submissions, risk evaluations, and underwriting judgment calls within the team.
Manage workload distribution and capacity across the team to maintain SLA performance during volume fluctuations or staffing changes.
Oversee training and SOP currency; ensure team members are up to date on appetite, product changes, pricing models, and industry developments.
Develop Underwriting Talent
Directly manages a team of underwriters that may include senior individual contributors, Team Leads, and/or other managers depending on organizational structure.
Coaches and develops team members with a focus on building independent decision-making, accountability, and technical proficiency — creating the conditions for others to operate with greater autonomy over time.
Partners with the People team and the Director throughout the full team member lifecycle, including performance management, coaching plans, hiring, and offboarding.
Identifies hiring needs and leads recruiting for high-quality underwriters; shapes team composition with a view toward future capability needs.
Execute on Operational Process and Improvement
Identify, develop, and implement process improvements that drive efficiency, underwriting quality, and conversion within the team.
Gather feedback from underwriters and internal partners to surface operational gaps; bring forward well-scoped recommendations to the Director.
Provide reporting and performance data to the Director and leadership; use data to frame team results and highlight trends requiring action.
Support implementation of new underwriting tools, best practices, and product or pricing changes as directed by the Director and cross-functional partners.
Support Partner and Stakeholder Relationships
Serve as an operational point of contact for partner agents on day-to-day underwriting matters, escalating relationship-level issues to the Director as appropriate.
Partner with Business Development to support retention and partner engagement at the team level.
The Right Stuff
High school diploma/GED required; Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Minimum 8 years of commercial insurance experience required; workers' compensation underwriting experience strongly preferred.
Minimum 4 years of progressive leadership experience in commercial insurance underwriting; experience leading managers or team leads is a plus but not required.
Disciplinary expertise sought out by peers and team members; strong technical underwriting judgment with the ability to handle complex risks independently.
Proven ability to manage operational execution across a team, balancing throughput, quality, and team development simultaneously.
Skilled at translating strategic direction into operational plans and guiding a team through execution — including during periods of change or ambiguity.
Strong data fluency: able to track team performance metrics, identify trends, and communicate findings clearly to leadership.
Effective cross-functional communicator; builds trust with internal partners and escalates appropriately without over-relying on the Director.
Advanced problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate multi-layered situations and anticipate downstream impacts.
Experience with performance management, coaching plans, and talent development.
Knowledge of insurance underwriting best practices, service metrics, and customer experience operations.
Progress toward or attainment of a professional designation (CPCU, ARe, or equivalent) is a plus and encouraged as a development milestone for those on a Director-track trajectory.
Proficiency in G-Suite tools and collaboration platforms (Slack preferred).

The opportunity
We’re looking for a Senior Pricing Actuary to strengthen and evolve Kin’s actuarial pricing capabilities as we scale our homeowners portfolio. This role exists to ensure rate adequacy, sharpen segmentation, and elevate the technical rigor of our pricing analyses in a rapidly changing risk environment.
Reporting to the Director, Actuarial Pricing, you’ll operate as a highly technical individual contributor — building and refining indications, integrating catastrophe and reinsurance impacts, and modernizing workflows through automation and Generative AI tools. You’ll partner closely with actuarial leadership, insurance product, and technology teams to translate complex analyses into decisions that directly impact growth, profitability, and customer value.
Your responsibilities
- Build and deploy tools using Generative AI and advanced analytics to automate pricing workflows and improve analytical insight.
- Perform statewide and segmented actuarial pricing indications for homeowners insurance products, ensuring rate adequacy and sound risk segmentation.
- Develop and enhance pricing methodologies by incorporating loss trends, expense assumptions, reinsurance costs, and catastrophe modeling outputs.
- Reconcile actuarial indications with financial performance and business objectives in partnership with actuarial leadership.
- Prepare actuarial support for rate filings, including exhibits, documentation, and responses to regulatory inquiries.
- Partner with insurance product teams to support rate changes, pricing reviews, and state expansion initiatives.
- Lead class plan builds and pricing support for new state launches and product expansions.
- Pull, clean, and validate data for CAT modeling; run catastrophe models and analyze results to inform ratemaking decisions.
- Collaborate with technology and data teams to improve data quality, automate analyses, and modernize pricing pipelines.
- Monitor regulatory developments, market trends, catastrophe activity, and structural changes that impact pricing strategy.
- Pricing indications are timely, technically rigorous, and clearly reconciled to financial results and business strategy.
- New actuarial tools meaningfully reduce manual work and improve decision-making through automation and advanced analytics.
- CAT modeling and reinsurance impacts are consistently and accurately integrated into ratemaking analyses.
- Actuarial pipelines and documentation are reliable, transparent, and scalable to support continued state expansion and product growth.
What you’ll bring
- FCAS or Career ACAS designation.
- 5+ years of actuarial experience in personal lines pricing.
- Demonstrated expertise in actuarial pricing techniques, including indications, trend analysis, and risk segmentation.
- Hands-on experience using SQL and Python (preferred) or R for data analysis and model development.
- Experience independently executing technically rigorous actuarial analyses.
- Proficiency in Excel for advanced modeling and analysis.
- Curiosity and practical experience leveraging Generative AI tools to improve actuarial processes.
Bonus:
- Direct experience with Florida, Texas, and/or California residential property insurance.
- Experience supporting rate filings and responding to DOI inquiries.
- Experience working with large datasets and modern analytics workflows.
- Predictive modeling experience, particularly loss cost modeling.
- Experience in an insurtech or high-growth environment.
- Hands-on experience with Git/GitHub in a collaborative team setting.
- Advanced experience applying Generative AI tools in actuarial or analytics workflows.
How we hire
We believe a great hiring experience should be clear, respectful, and human. We’ll accept applications for this position until April 20th, 2026.
