As part of Waymo's Legal team, you will work on the exciting legal issues surrounding our transformational autonomous driving technology and help drive our business lines forward from technology ideation through scaled commercial deployment. We partner with our public policy, safety, security and privacy experts to define transportation policy for the autonomous driving world to come, advising on regulatory changes that support and protect our users around the world. We collaborate with our engineering, product, strategy and operations teams to develop and protect our intellectual property portfolio and drive our corporate and commercial transactions. We ensure compliance with an increasingly complex and dynamic range of global regulations. And we anticipate, mitigate, and litigate high-profile and precedent-setting legal matters.
In this hybrid role, you will report to an Assistant General Counsel.
You will:
Organization, collection and management of information related to product litigation matters, internal investigations, legal holds, pre-litigation claims, and third party requests, including discovery and governmental requests for information
Partner with counsel to guide internal stakeholders and custodians on the litigation and investigations process, and help with preparation for pre-trial and trial testimony.
Lead, and as needed develop, and proactively streamline, processes and dashboards, keeping organized and timely the team’s litigation, investigations, and claims efforts, taking ownership of case files and preparation of documents and letters as needed to drive matters to conclusion.
Innovate and improve internal processes across the legal team related to knowledge management, document and data storage, and coordinate with client teams to optimize document practices and drive legal reviews.
Flex to the Legal Operations team as needed to support billing, vendor management and tooling initiatives, including potentially managing complex cross-functional projects that support the legal department’s continuous improvement efforts.
Keep abreast of the current trends to support and advise on the adaption and the implementation of record retention and other best practices, including the use of AI.
You have:
Detailed and in-depth understanding of the litigation life-cycle, experience managing offensive and defensive litigation team efforts, overseeing outside counsel updates, and coordinating all aspects of ediscovery processes, workflows and best practices, including experience with the latest ediscovery technology.
5+ years of prior litigation experience with a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
Excellent communication skills and ability to partner effectively at all levels of the company and cross-functionally, including executives and technical staff.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage a significant work load for multiple internal stakeholders with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
High level of enthusiasm for winning together as a team, driving achievement while being business-focused, and working collaboratively with legal and non-legal stakeholders.
We prefer:
Experience working with or at an automotive and/or technology company.
Experience supporting and partnering with product counsel and regulatory teams.
Experience supporting product litigation and investigation matters, with focus on product liability.
In-house and/or trial experience.
Experience responding to governmental requests for information, and/or other torts, commercial, employment, or IP litigation experience.

As Commercial Counsel for Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car business, you will be responsible for negotiating and closing commercial agreements to help drive our business forward. You will work on varied and exciting legal issues related to self-driving cars that require creative and proactive legal guidance. You will be part of an adaptable, dynamic and creative group of in-house lawyers, and the projects you take on will challenge you to think big and differently. You are collaborative - ready to partner in initiatives that influence all aspects of the business and work with teams from all over the company. In this role, you will support our entire organization, including our partnerships team, our supply chain team, and our engineering team.
In this hybrid role, you will report to a Managing Counsel.
You will:
Review, draft and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, with a focus on agreements with OEMs for the development of vehicle programs, vehicle supply, aftermarket services, etc.
Respond promptly to legal requests from vehicle partnerships, supply chain, product, engineering, sourcing, business development, finance, marketing, and other clients, summarizing and communicating legal concepts in a clear and concise manner.
Advise business and cross functional stakeholders on legal issues that may include product liability, regulatory issues, agreement structures and approval processes, company policies and procedures, IP, and negotiation strategy.
Support the continuous improvement of Waymo and the legal department by identifying and implementing improvements in processes, forms and operations.
You have:
JD degree and must be admitted to the bar in which position is located and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.
10+ years of experience advising on commercial agreements.
Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements; vehicle manufacture/supply agreements, licenses, supply chain agreements and services agreements.
Experience in another specialist subject area of law (for example but not limited to employment, intellectual property, corporate, or competition).
Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills, and demonstrated ability to manage several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure.
Ability and interest in developing expertise in new, complex subject areas.
We prefer:
Experience drafting and negotiating agreements for the development, manufacture and supply of vehicle platforms, as well as agreements related to service/maintenance of vehicles

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Managing Counsel.
You will:
Develop risk-based approaches to cybersecurity compliance that balance legal risk mitigation and regulatory requirements with business objectives.
Partner effectively with Security, Engineering, Safety, and Product teams on vulnerability management, threat analyses, and cybersecurity risk assessments.
Spearhead the evolution of Waymo’s cybersecurity incident response and reporting program in connection with the domestic and international expansion of its autonomous vehicle operations.
Drive efforts to manage cybersecurity risk effectively within the company’s supplier and partner ecosystem and promote supply chain security.
Support internal and external audits, assessments, and regulatory inquiries related to cybersecurity compliance.
Monitor emerging cybersecurity laws, regulations, executive orders, and agency guidance, and lead business-focused compliance efforts.
You have:
Law degree (LLB, LLM, or JD), plus at least 5 years of experience counseling on cybersecurity matters with a law firm, government agency, or in-house legal department.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to explain complex legal and cybersecurity issues cogently to technical and non-technical audiences, including executives.
Experience advising clients on cybersecurity compliance and incident response programs (e.g., ransomware events, supply chain compromises, and insider threats), including incident containment, forensic investigations, and reporting programs for complying with federal, state, and international laws and regulations.
Experience with supply chain cybersecurity risk management, including advising on third-party security risk assessments, preparation of SBOMs and HBOMs, and supply chain cybersecurity.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage a significant workload with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency and comfort navigating ambiguity and developing effective, business-oriented solutions to managing legal and cybersecurity risk; enthusiasm for winning together as a team and working collaboratively with legal and non-legal stakeholders.
We prefer:
Extensive knowledge of applicable standards for cybersecurity, including NIST CSF, ISO 27001, and/or ISO 28000.
Experience engaging with regulators, such as CISA, FBI, or state attorneys general, on cybersecurity matters.
Experience advising on security risk management in connection with AI/ML systems, operational technology, cyber physical systems, critical infrastructure, or autonomous systems.
Cybersecurity or information security certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM).
Experience advising and participating in incident response teams in connection with cybersecurity attacks.

In this hybrid role, you will report to an Managing Counsel.
You will:
Develop vision, strategy, and implementation for complying with a range of regulations - this includes interpreting legacy legal and regulatory frameworks that didn’t contemplate our novel technology and advising on new laws and regulations developed with AVs and related emerging technology in mind.
Advise on matters primarily U.S. federal matters, with an emphasis on areas of greatest need (e.g. legislative review and drafting of proposed legislation and regulations). This role will also support international regulatory matters.
Engage in cross-functional planning efforts to ensure that regulatory compliance and strategy are properly incorporated into the project roadmap.
Respond to novel questions of law on various topics, including issues that may be new to you and/or the company.
Provide counsel on proposed legislation and regulations and in negotiations among stakeholders. Collaborate with our Policy team on advocacy strategies for engaging with regulators and policymakers.
You have:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and an active bar membership
5+ years of experience as an attorney at a firm, in-house at a company, or in government.
