About Chalk
Chalk is building the data platform that powers the future of machine learning applications. We tear down complexity, latency, and scale barriers that have traditionally constrained ML capabilities. Our platform combines Rust-speed performance with elegant tools that developers love to use. Leading companies depend on Chalk for everything from stopping fraudulent credit card swipes, verifying identities, and maximizing clean energy capture. We've recently raised a $50 million Series A https://www.reuters.com/business/databricks-competitor-chalk-raises-50-million-series-2025-05-28/, led by Felicis.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are hiring our first software engineer dedicated to developer productivity. Today this work is spread across the engineering team alongside everything else people are shipping. You would be the first person to own it outright, set the priorities, and build the function from here. What you build will be used by every engineer at Chalk.
Chalk's engine is C++ and Rust with a Python interface, and it is held to a demanding latency bar of 100k QPS in 5ms. Much of your work will be making those builds and tests fast, hermetic, and reliable. We run a mix of GitHub Actions and Buildkite today and are currently consolidating on Buildkite and Bazel.
We're in the office 5 days a week. When unavoidable conflicts come up, we're flexible. This is not a hybrid role.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Own our Bazel build system, including toolchains, dependency management, and remote execution.
- Work across the engineering organization, with support from leadership, to create a consistent experience for engineers to run and develop Chalk in containerized dev environments.
- Establish test and benchmark patterns.
- Own CI health which includes speed, reliability, and completion.
- Drive down test flakiness.
- Make C++ and Rust builds and tests faster through toolchain work, caching, remote execution, and dependency hygiene.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, ideally in developer productivity.
- Hands on Bazel experience. You have written and debugged BUILD files and Starlark, configured toolchains, and worked through either a real migration or in a large existing workspace
- C++ coding experience as a Software Engineer.
- Ability to work autonomously and to make pragmatic tradeoffs with an eye towards business outcomes.
- Strong communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience. Strong experience matters more here than the credential
BONUS POINTS
- Experience with Nix
- Experience with Buildkite
- Experience with Bazel remote execution and remote caching at scale
- Experience writing custom Bazel rules
- Experience with benchmark infrastructure for latency sensitive systems
- Experience building developer platforms used by an entire engineering org

About the role
Working directly with our founders, you'll serve as the engineering site lead for our New York office. You'll start by directly managing individual contributor engineers and tech leads, and as we scale the team, you'll hire and develop engineering managers beneath you — building the leadership layer of our NYC organization from the ground up.
This is a rare opportunity to define the technical strategy, organizational structure, and engineering culture of a fast-growing AI infrastructure startup. You'll collaborate with brilliant folks, including Putnam and Advent of Code winners, former Jane Street quants, and Rust compiler contributors — all dedicated to bending the curve of what's possible in AI inference.
We're in the office 5 days a week. When unavoidable conflicts come up, we’re flexible. This is not a hybrid role.
What you will do
- Serve as the engineering site lead for New York, with ownership of all NYC engineering
- Directly manage engineers building Chalk's data platform, and hire and grow engineering managers as the site scales
- Partner with the founding team to set technical strategy and shape our long-term product and platform roadmap
- Design the organizational structure, hiring plan, and leadership pipeline for a rapidly growing engineering site
- Establish engineering processes and operating rhythms that enable high velocity without sacrificing quality
- Work directly with customers and executives to understand requirements and ensure Chalk's platform solves real-world ML challenges
- Define and champion Chalk's engineering culture in New York — you'll set the bar for how we attract, develop, and retain top talent
What we're looking for
- 10+ years of engineering experience with 5+ years of engineering management
- Experience managing managers, or a clear readiness to build and lead a multi-layer organization
- Previous experience at an early-stage startup
- Experience building production ML systems or data infrastructure
- Strong programming skills and systems thinking — you understand how things work under the hood, and you stay close to the technology
- Proven ability to lead through others: hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers and engineering leaders
- Executive-level communicator who can bridge technical, business, and customer contexts
- Track record of delivering complex, high-stakes projects and scaling teams through rapid growth
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
Bonus points
- Experience as a site lead or founding leader of a new office or engineering hub
- Experience with Rust or distributed systems
- Experience with query planners or compilers
- Experience implementing data infrastructure or PaaS-like software
- Experience scaling engineering organizations from single-digit to multi-team in high-growth environments

THE ROLE
We are hiring an Engagement Manager to manage the delivery of customer engagements into production. Working for our Head of Engagement Management, you will own the project and program management of defined-scope implementations—running the plan, coordinating the team, tracking risks and action items, and keeping stakeholders informed—so our customers reach live, value-generating deployments on time.
This is a hands-on delivery role with room to grow. You will build the technical fluency and stakeholder judgment that lead, over time, to owning our largest and most strategic engagements.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Manage customer engagements to production — own the project plan, timeline, and day-to-day execution for defined-scope implementations.
- Coordinate cross-functional delivery teams — keep Chalk Forward-Deployed Engineers, customer stakeholders, and any partners aligned and moving.
- Maintain program governance — keep control documents, RAID/risk logs, action items, and status current and accurate.
- Track and escalate risks and issues — surface blockers early, follow up on owners and due dates, and escalate to your Senior EM when needed.
- Run a clear communication cadence — deliver reliable, well-organized status updates to customer and internal audiences.
- Translate between business and technical teams — capture requirements, document decisions, and help the team make progress against customer outcomes.
- Support executive conversations — prepare briefings and materials, and contribute to discovery and planning discussions.
- Follow and improve the engagement playbook — apply Chalk's standard templates and mechanisms, and suggest improvements as you learn.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN IN YOUR FIRST 6–12 MONTHS
- Take ownership of multiple concurrent high stakes engagements and drive them to their production milestones.
- Run a dependable status and action-item cadence your customers and internal team rely on.
- Build working relationships with your customers' project and technical stakeholders.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years in project/program management, professional services delivery, technical account management, or a comparable customer-facing delivery role.
- Experience managing projects with cross-functional stakeholders through to completion.
- Strong organization, written communication, and follow-through.
- Comfort working with technical teams and customer stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Exposure to data, ML/AI, or infrastructure/platform products.
- Familiarity with project management and collaboration tooling (e.g., Linear, Jira, Asana).
- Project management coursework or certification (e.g., PMP) a plus.
- Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Within your first year, your engagements reach production on plan, your status and risk tracking are trusted by customers and the internal team, and you are steadily taking on larger and more complex work with less oversight.
LOCATION & TRAVEL
Hybrid role based in San Francisco, New York or Los Angeles, with in-office collaboration and travel to customer sites as engagements require.
Listed by Chalk for a position based in the United States. Employers on this board attest they are hiring domestically.

This is not a traditional renewals or farming role. Chalk is an early-stage, consumption-based ML infrastructure company. Revenue growth depends on helping customers identify, launch, and scale high-value production use cases. You will work closely with customers, Forward Deployed Engineering, Product, and Sales to expand Chalk’s footprint across strategic accounts.
You will be responsible for building executive relationships, developing account plans, identifying expansion opportunities, forecasting consumption growth, managing renewals, and turning successful use cases into broader enterprise adoption.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Own post-sale commercial outcomes for a portfolio of enterprise customers, including expansion, renewal, retention, and consumption growth.
- Build and execute strategic account plans that map customer priorities, technical use cases, stakeholders, budgets, buying centers, and expansion paths.
- Partner with Forward Deployed Engineering to move customer use cases from early deployment into production and scaled usage.
- Identify new use cases, teams, business units, and workloads where Chalk can create measurable value.
- Build trusted relationships with technical champions, business owners, procurement teams, and executive sponsors.
- Forecast expansion, renewal, and consumption growth with rigor and accuracy.
- Lead commercial conversations around renewals, expansions, pricing, packaging, and enterprise agreements.
- Develop a deep understanding of each customer’s ML infrastructure, production workflows, data architecture, and business objectives.
- Surface customer patterns, blockers, and product feedback to leadership and Product.
- Help define the playbook for account management in a high-growth, consumption-based ML infrastructure company.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
In your first 90 days, you will:
- Build a clear understanding of Chalk’s product, customer base, use cases, and revenue model.
- Develop account plans for your assigned enterprise customers.
- Establish strong working relationships with CS, Sales, Solutions, Field Engineering, and Product.
- Build a use-case expansion pipeline across your accounts.
- Improve visibility into renewal risk, consumption growth, and expansion potential.
- Begin leading customer commercial conversations with confidence.
Over time, you will be measured by:
- Net revenue retention
- Gross revenue retention
- Expansion revenue
- Consumption growth
- Renewal execution
- Forecast accuracy
- Qualified use-case pipeline
- Production use-case expansion
- Executive relationship depth
- Customer health and commercial durability
WHO YOU ARE
- You have experience managing and growing enterprise software or infrastructure accounts.
- You understand that expansion in technical products is earned through adoption, value, trust, and execution — not just relationship management.
- You are commercially sharp and comfortable leading pricing, renewal, and expansion conversations.
- You can operate with technical depth and credibility across ML, data, infrastructure, developer tools, cloud, or enterprise software environments.
- You are highly structured: you build account plans, inspect pipeline, manage next steps, and forecast carefully.
- You are comfortable in an early-stage company where the playbook is still being built.
- You can work cross-functionally without needing perfect role clarity.
- You are direct, accountable, and customer-obsessed.
- You know how to balance strategic enterprise relationship-building with hands-on execution.

- Proven ability to grow strategic accounts through multi-threading, account planning, executive engagement, and use-case expansion.
- Comfort working with technical stakeholders, including ML engineers, data engineers, platform teams, architects, and engineering leaders.
- Strong commercial judgment and negotiation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, high-accountability environment.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
Chalk’s largest customers have the potential to grow significantly as they put more AI and ML workloads into production. The Enterprise Account Manager will be central to making that happen.
You will help define how Chalk grows after the first deal: how we identify expansion, how we manage enterprise relationships, how we forecast usage, how we protect renewals, and how we turn individual use cases into long-term platform adoption.
This is a high-impact role for someone who wants to build the post-sale commercial motion at an early infrastructure company with significant upside.
Listed by Chalk for a position based in the United States. Employers on this board attest they are hiring domestically.
