About Lightfield
Lightfield is an AI-native CRM that assembles itself from your email, calendar, and meetings. It captures every interaction and turns it into organized context: accounts, tasks, follow-ups, and insights, so nothing slips through the cracks.
We’re rethinking CRM from first principles. Instead of forcing teams to maintain rigid systems, Lightfield learns from how companies actually work, adapting, automating, and surfacing the insight that drives growth. We’re building the CRM platform we always wished existed: fast, intelligent, and genuinely helpful.
We are backed by Greylock, Lightspeed, and Coatue, and our founders previously built Tome, a generative AI presentation product used by over 25 million people. Before Lightfield, our team worked on Llama, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Pinterest, Google, and Salesforce.
About the role
We're building the infrastructure foundation for a fast-growing AI product company serving thousands of customers:
Our Postgres fleet serves 5B+ queries a month — roughly 2,500 QPS steady state, with sustained spikes past 25,000 QPS — and database workload more than doubled last month.
Redis sustains ~50,000 commands per second behind a job platform that executes 10M+ background job runs a day across ~170 queues.
We ingest tens of millions of emails and calendar events a month.
That growth creates scaling pressure across backend systems, infrastructure, and data infrastructure. We're hiring a staff-level engineer who spikes in data infrastructure but is excited to work across backend systems, infrastructure, and product-facing data problems. The work is close to the product, close to customers, and close to production.
As a Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure, you'll build the next generation of our data systems. We got remarkably far on a deliberately simple stack: Postgres as the system of record, a sharded transactional outbox for change events, Redis-buffered sync into Typesense for search, BullMQ for processing, and Postgres-backed customer-facing analytics with per-organization row-level security.
The next phase is evolving that pragmatic foundation into best-practice data architecture: change data capture, event modeling, schema design, query performance, freshness guarantees, and the right boundary between transactional and analytical workloads.
The system of record itself is unusual. Customers define their own objects, attributes, and relationships at runtime, so the core data model is a schema-flexible, graph-shaped store: entity-attribute-value with typed edges, versioned attribute values, and relationship history. That makes schema design, indexing, and query performance genuinely hard problems rather than routine tuning.
The surface area is wider than analytics: customer-facing dashboards, historical and audit data, datasets that power pipeline-generation products, and evaluation data that measures our AI agents. This is data infrastructure work, not a BI or dashboarding role. It's a good fit for someone who likes high-volume data systems, pragmatic architecture decisions, and building foundations that product and engineering teams can actually depend on.
This role can be based in San Francisco or Cambridge. In San Francisco, you'd work from our HQ alongside the founders and most of the engineering team. In Cambridge, you'd join an initial group of staff-level engineers at our new, infrastructure-focused Kendall Square site, working alongside one of our most senior infrastructure engineers. We aim to build the site and organization around this group as the company scales.
What you'll do
Scale the analytics engine behind customer-facing dashboards, tackling query performance under row-level security, workload isolation, read architecture, and observability as data volume grows.
Design the ingestion paths, event models, schemas, and query patterns that move data from transactional writes into search, dashboards, and history—with clear guarantees around freshness, correctness, replay, and failure recovery.
Evolve our schema-flexible, graph-shaped data model so customer-defined objects, attributes, and relationships remain fast to query as their size and complexity grow.
Build the foundations for historical reporting and auditability, including attribute versioning, relationship history, and change capture.
Build reliable data systems for usage metering, pipeline generation, and AI evaluation, where errors have direct customer, product, or financial consequences.
Decide when our existing architecture remains the right foundation and when new analytical, streaming, or workflow systems earn their added complexity.
Set the technical direction, abstractions, ownership boundaries, and engineering practices for data systems as the company grows.
What your first year looks like
Scaling the analytics serving path behind customer-facing dashboards is the anchor project, but the work stays close to the product. The current slate also includes:
Zero-downtime schema migrations for an 18-collection Typesense search deployment.
A usage-metering pipeline for consumption billing.
Historical and audit data modeling.
Evaluation data infrastructure for our AI agents.
Expect a first year that mixes foundational data systems with product-shaped projects, with the scope to own the technical direction for how data is modeled, moved, and served across Lightfield—and to shape the architecture, abstractions, and team we build as the company scales.
What we're looking for
Strong software engineering fundamentals.
Experience owning production data systems where query plans, replication lag, backfills, data freshness, schema evolution, or data correctness had real user-facing consequences.
Comfort debugging across multiple layers of the stack.
Good judgment about when to make a tactical fix and when to invest in a more durable platform or architecture change.
Product orientation: you care about how data infrastructure decisions affect customers, users, and engineering velocity.
Clear communication, strong ownership, and a bias toward practical tradeoffs.
Helpful experience
You do not need all of these:
ClickHouse, OLAP systems, event pipelines, data warehouses, or analytical infrastructure.
Kafka, Flink, Spark, Iceberg, or similar streaming and lakehouse systems.
Postgres at scale, and the boundary between OLTP and OLAP systems.
APIs, queues, workflow systems, and distributed systems.
Observability, incident response, service ownership, and production debugging.
Data for ML/AI systems: enrichment pipelines, eval harnesses, or data-quality tooling.
Experience in a high-growth product environment.
Why this role is interesting
You'd be building our analytical data architecture from close to the beginning — the foundations are deliberately simple, and the architecture that scales them is yours to shape. Customer-facing data products are on the roadmap, database workload more than doubled last month, and the foundations you build will carry the company for years.

We’re building the CRM platform we always wished existed: fast, intelligent, and genuinely helpful.
The market agrees. Over 5,000 companies have used Lightfield since we launched in November, making us the fastest-adopted product in our category.
If you want to be part of the AI wave and are drawn to the systems challenges of a product used by both people and agents, this role is for you. Lightfield's infrastructure supports human-interactive requests, agent-driven queries and actions, scheduled agents, and continuous ingestion of email, calendar, and meeting data. Based in our Cambridge office, you'll work on the databases, scheduling, permissions, and distributed systems that keep these workloads fast, isolated, and reliable as they share the same underlying customer data.
The work is not research, but many of the same habits matter: forming hypotheses, reading unfamiliar systems deeply, designing careful experiments, and explaining what the evidence shows. You'll use those habits on problems like these:
Querying a schema-flexible data model. Customers define their own object types, fields, and relationships at runtime, while the underlying data is stored in Postgres. We work on query planning, indexing, and data-access patterns that keep those records fast to filter and aggregate as datasets grow.
Record-level permissions across relationships. Access can come from ownership, direct grants, group membership, or inheritance from another record. We need a permissions model that evaluates those paths efficiently and produces the same answer across the application, API, search, dashboards, and agents.
Balancing real-time and batch workloads. Search indexing competes with historical imports and backfills for shared database and queue capacity. We use concurrency controls, prioritization, and backpressure to keep real-time updates moving while still processing large batches.
You'll design and review systems, debug production behavior, and gradually take full ownership of one or more subsystems. You'll ship production work early with close design and code review, then take on increasingly open-ended projects as you demonstrate readiness.
You'd join a small, systems-focused engineering group in our new Kendall Square office early enough to help establish how it works, alongside a site lead who is one of our most senior infrastructure engineers.
What you'll do
Ship production work early with close design and code review, then grow into end-to-end ownership of a system.
Investigate systems methodically: reproduce behavior, add instrumentation, form a hypothesis, and test it against production evidence.
Work on query performance, data modeling, permissions, scheduling, and keeping customer-facing data fresh.
Debug real production issues across application code, databases, queues, and infrastructure.
Learn how production systems are designed and operated through code review, incident response, and owning what you ship.
What we're looking for
Strong computer science fundamentals and a degree in CS or a related field.
Depth somewhere systems-shaped: research experience, coursework you went deep on (operating systems, databases, distributed systems, security), a systems-flavored internship, or a project you can talk about for an hour.
Curiosity about how things actually work. You'd rather understand the query planner than work around it.
Ownership: you finish things, and you care that they keep working after you ship them.
Clear communication about technical decisions and tradeoffs.
Why this role is interesting
Most new grad roles put you several layers away from the systems that matter. This one doesn't. You'll see how decisions about data models, query plans, permissions, and scheduling affect real customers, while working closely with experienced infrastructure engineers. If you want to turn academic depth into production judgment and do serious systems work without leaving Cambridge, this is that job.

About the Role
We're hiring a founding member of our Growth & Delivery team.
The team activates customers on the Lightfield platform, delivers their pipeline generation motion, supports strategic deals alongside our leadership team, and drives special projects across GTM and business operations.
You'll work directly with founders and their teams to build their customer memory on Lightfield, put agents to work generating pipeline, and help their business grow. The agents do the work—you bring the judgment and taste that guide them, and the advisory relationship with the customer.
You're both an operator and a builder: running many customer engagements at once, and turning what works into playbooks the whole team can run.
What you’ll do
Activate new customers on Lightfield: set up their workspace, migrate their data, build their customer memory, and enable their team, so Lightfield becomes the system their company runs on
Deliver pipeline generation for a portfolio of customers: understand each business, define the ICP and targeting strategy, and direct Lightfield's agents from first outreach to booked meetings
Advise founders and GTM leaders on their go-to-market: what to target, what to say, and what to try next
Own the outcomes: time-to-activation, meetings booked, and the quality of the pipeline behind them
Support strategic deals alongside our leadership team, from scoping POCs to helping convert evaluations into customers
Take on special projects across GTM and business operations, from business analysis to competitive research to new initiatives
Turn what works into playbooks, and feed what you learn back to product so the agents get better
Who you are
3+ years of experience in consulting, banking, investing, or go-to-market and operating roles
A strong generalist, comfortable across delivery, growth, and customer-facing work. You don't wait to be handed a lane and instead figure out what needs to happen and do it
A trusted advisor to founders and GTM leaders - curious and analytical, able to read a business and its customers quickly, move from qualitative signals to a clear hypothesis, and back your view with data.
A systems thinker who brings structure to open-ended problems and builds playbooks and repeatable processes, not just completed tasks
High agency and thrives in ambiguity, able to independently drive projects and deliver results in a fast-moving environment
You're excited about AI agents and the opportunity to deliver customer outcomes with them
Eager to learn GTM and outbound. Prior experience is a plus, not a prerequisite

About the Role
Every customer success team is told to drive adoption in a product they can't configure, then waits on engineering for every change. Lightfield is different. The product configures itself, and the agents do the execution, so this job is about judgment and the customer, not chasing tickets.
We've shipped a product founders love, with nearly 5,000 companies signed up since our November launch. For teams who go deep, Lightfield replaces a whole stack: the CRM, the enrichment, the sequencing, and the operator who wired it all together. We need someone to own what happens after they sign, and to get them there: migrated, live, and growing.
This is a founding role. We've built the early foundation - the processes, the playbooks, the first customers - and now we need someone to own it and take it further. You'll inherit real accounts, high-growth startups already running on Lightfield, and take them from signed to running their business on us, and getting more from it every month.
You'll do the account work directly at first, and the scope grows quickly, into larger customers and more responsibility as you build. For the right person, it's a seat you build a function or a career on. You'll report to the Head of Customer Success and work daily with sales, product, and engineering.
You're equal parts operator, builder, and trusted advisor. Lightfield's agents do the execution. You bring the judgment that guides them and own the relationship with the customer.
What You'll Do
You own our most important customers from the moment they sign, and you own the value they get and how much they grow:
Migrate them onto Lightfield and get their business running on it quickly
Build their workflows and automations in the product, so Lightfield does the work they used to do by hand
Drive adoption across the whole team, until Lightfield is where their daily work happens
Spot where they can get more from the platform, make the case, and grow the account as they do
Own the outcomes: retention, net revenue retention, and expansion across your book. With consumption pricing, adoption is revenue
You're in the product with your customers throughout, building alongside engineers who stay close to the people they build for.
What We're Looking For
4+ years in customer success, account management, or solutions consulting at a technical B2B product, carrying your own book and a number
You've owned accounts from onboarding through expansion, and can name the ones you grew, by how much, and what you did to get there
You build in the products you run. You've shipped the automations, workflows, and integrations that made a customer successful, with your own hands
You've taken a stalled or underused account and turned it around, and can take us through exactly how
You engage founders and VPs as a peer on their whole business - their pipeline, their process, their goals
You teach so well that customers outgrow needing you
You're the first dedicated customer success hire on the team. You'll build on the foundation we have and shape how the function grows
Bonus: you've worked inside consumption or usage-based pricing, and you know how usage, value, and expansion feed each other

About the Role
We've shipped a product founders love. Nearly 5,000 companies have signed up since our November launch. And our customers build inside Lightfield: writing skills, designing automations, wiring our workflows into how they operate. That changes what support has to be.
Every support team in software wants the same thing: keep customers working as they scale, without adding a body for every cohort. Most can't get there. They bolt AI onto tools built for manual work, and the seams show.
Lightfield starts from the other end. The product is the AI engine, the same one our customers use to run their own go-to-market. So we can build what almost no one can: a support function that's AI-native from the ground up, running on the product itself.
We're hiring our first Support Engineer to build it.
In the near term, you own everything technical that keeps customers working. You're in the queue every day resolving real issues, and you go deep in a customer's instance when something is genuinely complex. You partner with the CSM, who owns the relationship and the account, while you own resolution and the systems behind it:
Health scoring that flags risk before a renewal slips
Onboarding that runs itself
A front-line agent that handles the first wave of questions
A knowledge base as the single source of truth, written for AI agents first
Every issue you resolve teaches the system, so the next one is easier. You scale through systems, not headcount.
Support is also the front edge of the customer experience. Done well, it's why customers stay and expand, which puts this role closer to revenue than a typical support seat.
The bigger prize is the function itself. You define what AI-native support looks like in production. Get it right and it becomes the model Lightfield scales on.
This is a founding individual-contributor role. You own the work yourself today, with a clear path to leading the function and its team as it grows. You report to the Head of Customer Success and work with engineering, product, and customers every day.
What You'll Do
Own resolution, end to end
Own the inbound queue across Slack and email, including response time and resolution quality
Set and hold SLAs, triage, and define escalation criteria
Resolve technical tickets yourself: workflow debugging, integration issues, agent behavior, custom object setup
Go deep in a customer's instance when an issue is genuinely complex
Turn recurring tickets into documentation
Build the system that scales it
Stand up the AI support agent and drive deflection up
Keep the knowledge base ahead of the product, so the agent answers without you
Build internal tooling for what customers can't self-serve yet. Engineering absorbs it over time, so you build what's needed now
Build the health score model around a north-star metric that predicts retention and expansion
Drive activation and retention
Deploy automated onboarding for every new customer: in-product education, activation nudges, time-to-value sequences
Run proactive rescues on at-risk accounts, alongside the CSM
Surface expansion signals. With consumption pricing, this is a revenue function
Document it and close the loop
Write the support playbook: SOPs, triggers, rules of engagement
Build the reporting leadership reads: retention, engagement, risk, expansion
Own the product feedback loop. You see what's breaking first, and engineering needs it from you
What We're Looking For
This role is hands-on. You live in the queue and build the systems that make it smaller. The best person for it wants both.
A technical, customer-facing background: support engineering, solutions engineering, CS Ops, or technical consulting
You've carried real ticket volume yourself and can point to the hardest issues you resolved and how
You write scripts, hit APIs, and debug integrations without waiting on engineering, and can walk through something you built that way
You've turned a recurring problem into automation or tooling that made the work lighter, and can show what changed
You've gone deep in a customer's environment to solve something complex, and can take us through it
You hold your own on a call with a technical founder, and you pick up new tools fast
Bonus: you've built on LLMs and AI agents, or owned support solo before

About The Role
Lightfield is reinventing CRM from the ground up - and we're doing it fast. We're an early-stage startup where every hire directly shapes our trajectory, and we need someone who is energized by that pressure, not intimidated by it. Reporting directly to the CEO, you'll own talent across Engineering and GTM in one of the most critical phases of company building: the zero-to-one sprint where the right hires compound and the wrong ones cost months. Your north star is scaling a world-class engineering team without losing the bar.
What You'll Own
Full-spectrum recruiting - end-to-end ownership across Engineering and GTM, with a heavy center of gravity on scaling early-stage engineering teams fast. Senior engineers, ML specialists, infrastructure leads - you know how to find them, pitch them, and close them in competitive markets.
Talent strategy & employer brand - define what "great" looks like at an early-stage company moving at our speed, craft the narrative that makes elite engineers and operators choose us over the big names, and build the employer brand from scratch.
Sourcing engine, zero → one - there's no inherited playbook here. You'll build repeatable, data-driven pipelines from the ground up across outbound, referrals, events, and community - and iterate on them constantly.
Process & tooling - implement the right amount of ATS structure and communication discipline for a lean, fast-moving startup so no great candidate ever falls through the cracks - without over-engineering for a company our size.
Candidate experience - run a crisp, high-velocity process that respects candidates' time and turns skeptics into advocates, hired or not.
Hiring manager partnership - coach managers across functions on calibration, interview technique, and closing; surface weekly funnel insights so leadership always knows where things stand.
Who You Are
5+ years of full-cycle recruiting, with a heavy focus on scaling early-stage engineering teams in fast-paced, high-growth environments
A proven closer who has landed senior and staff-level engineers in competitive markets - and can tell the story of how
A builder by nature - you've stood up or overhauled recruiting systems from scratch in ambiguous, low-infrastructure startup environments and thrived in it
Comfortable with speed and ambiguity - at an early-stage startup, the priorities shift, the roles evolve, and the bar keeps moving; you adjust without losing momentum
Autonomous and decisive - you operate well as a team of one, make trade-offs without hand-holding, and iterate fast
Genuinely motivated by the mission, not just the process - you want to help build something from the ground up, not just fill seats

This role reports directly to our Head of GTM.
What you'll do
Build an AI-native performance marketing engine. You’ll architect every part of our growth machine - including experiment design, creative production, and analysis - with agents (and the Lightfield platform) at the center. You’ll set the bar for what this discipline looks like in 2026.
Run paid acquisition. You’ll run strategy and execution across Google, LinkedIn, Meta, Reddit, X, and newsletter sponsorships.
Optimize our self-serve funnel. You’ll own our self-serve sign-up and conversion targets, and systematically address friction at every point in our self-serve customer acquisition journey.
Own lifecycle marketing. You'll design and optimize every touch from signup through expansion, including onboarding sequences, trial nudges, and churned user re-engagement.
Build the measurement systems we need to scale. You’ll architect first-touch and last-touch attribution tracking, define how we measure the impact of brand campaigns, and surface this data in a way that guides where we invest in growth.
Who you are
You’re AI-native. You use AI tools to pull analyses, generate and test creative, brief landing pages, and move at speeds that weren't possible two years ago.
You’re deeply hands-on with Google and LinkedIn. You can sit in each platform and performance tune campaigns yourself without outside assistance.
You’re fluent in measuring brand, not just direct response. You've owned a mixed brand-and-performance budget and know how to evaluate channels designed to produce halo, not last-click. You have opinions on MMM vs. multi-touch vs. self-reported attribution, and you've run incrementality tests.
You’re a strong written communicator. You write crisp briefs, sharp ad copy, and clear analyses.
You have a track record of success at a fast-paced early-stage company. You’re comfortable with a less-structured work environment and shipping daily.

At Lightfield, the backend is not a layer beneath the product. It is the product's foundation.
Lightfield builds a living model of a company's customers from emails, calls, meetings, and other signals. It structures that raw history into customer-defined objects, attributes, relationships, and versioned values, then exposes the same underlying capabilities to the product UI, external APIs, automations, and agents. Decisions about the data model, authorization, event propagation, and execution semantics directly determine what customers can do.
As a Software Engineer, Backend, you'll own those decisions for important product capabilities. You'll start with an ambiguous customer or product problem, define the behavior and system boundaries, design the data model and APIs, sequence migrations, and carry the capability through rollout and production. Recent examples include record-level permissions, field history and audit, durable workflows, and consumption metering.
These foundations already operate at meaningful scale:
Our Postgres fleet serves 5B+ queries a month — roughly 2,500 QPS steady state, with sustained spikes past 25,000 QPS — and database workload more than doubled last month.
Redis sustains ~50,000 commands per second behind a job platform that executes 10M+ background job runs a day across ~170 queues.
We ingest tens of millions of emails and calendar events a month.
Scale makes the product work technically serious: new abstractions must be fast, reliable, observable, and safe under real load. But this is not primarily a role for keeping the lights on. It's a chance to define foundational pieces of an AI-native product while the architecture is still taking shape—and to see those decisions change what customers and agents can accomplish.
This role can be based in San Francisco or Cambridge. In San Francisco, you'd work from our HQ alongside the founders and most of the engineering team. In Cambridge, you'd join an initial group of staff-level engineers at our new Kendall Square site, working alongside one of our most senior infrastructure engineers. We aim to build the site and organization around this group as the company scales.
What you'll do
Own core product capabilities end to end—from customer requirement and behavioral semantics through data model, API, migration, rollout, and operation.
Design the shared abstractions used by Lightfield's UI, public API, agents, automations, and internal engineering teams.
Evolve a schema-flexible, graph-shaped data model on Postgres, where customers define objects, attributes, and relationships at runtime and values change over time.
Build systems for authorization, history, event propagation, durable execution, and metering that become visible parts of the customer experience.
Partner directly with product engineers, product leadership, and customers to turn ambiguous needs into practical backend architecture.
Make high-throughput Node.js services, Postgres query paths, APIs, queues, and background jobs fast, reliable, observable, and understandable.
Debug production behavior across application code, database execution, distributed workflows, and observability data rather than treating each layer in isolation.
Decide when a focused fix is enough and when the product needs a durable new primitive or architectural change.
Raise the technical bar through design leadership, code review, operational ownership, and clear engineering judgment.
What your first year could look like
The work is organized around consequential product problems rather than a fixed infrastructure lane. Projects you might own or extend include:
Permissions: define and enforce record-level access across the product UI, REST API, search, dashboards, agent context, captured interactions, and exports—then migrate customers safely onto the model.
History and audit: make field and relationship changes queryable and trustworthy for customers, agents, APIs, and compliance-sensitive workflows.
Change propagation: evolve the transactional outbox that fans CRM mutations into search, summarization, automations, and downstream systems without losing ordering, attribution, or observability.
Durable work: build the execution model behind long-running workflows and automations, including retries, scheduling, versioning, debugging, and safe code execution.
Usage and billing: design metering primitives that connect product behavior to consumption limits, customer analytics, and billing.
Data and search evolution: ship zero-downtime changes across Postgres and search infrastructure while preserving correctness for a live, multi-tenant product.
You'll move among projects as priorities change, sometimes leading a small pod and sometimes contributing to one. The constant is end-to-end ownership: understanding why the capability matters, making the architecture concrete, shipping it, and staying close to how it behaves for customers in production.
What we're looking for
Strong software engineering fundamentals and substantial experience building backend systems.
A record of owning significant product-facing systems or ambiguous technical projects from design through production.
Strong judgment about data models, APIs, system boundaries, migrations, and incremental rollout.
Experience operating systems with real reliability, latency, throughput, and correctness requirements.
Comfort debugging across multiple layers of the stack, especially when product behavior and system behavior do not line up neatly.
Product orientation: you care about the customer-visible consequences of backend decisions, not only the elegance of the implementation.
The ability to make practical tradeoffs, communicate clearly, and create alignment without relying on formal authority.
Helpful experience
You do not need all of these:
Node.js or similar high-throughput service environments.
Postgres performance tuning, query planning, indexing, transaction design, or multi-tenant data modeling.
APIs, queues, workflow systems, background jobs, and distributed systems.
Observability, incident response, service ownership, and production debugging.
Experience in a high-growth product environment.
Why this role is interesting
Most companies separate product work from platform work: one team decides what customers should experience, and another builds the systems underneath it. At Lightfield, many of the most important product questions are backend questions. What does a customer record mean when its schema can change at runtime? How should permissions apply to an agent, an automation, a search result, or a meeting captured tomorrow? How do you make historical state, background execution, and customer-facing APIs reliable enough to become product primitives?
You'll get to answer questions like these while the answers are still being formed. The abstractions you design will be used by customers, product engineers, external developers, and agents—and will shape which products Lightfield can build next. The appeal is not just technical depth or scale. It's the chance to own consequential pieces of the product, from the customer problem to the production system, at a stage when individual engineering judgment still has outsized influence.
