THUMBTACK HELPS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE CONFIDENTLY CARE FOR THEIR HOMES.
Thumbtack is the one app you need to take care of and improve your home — from personalized guidance to AI tools and a best-in-class hiring experience. Every day in every county of the U.S., people turn to Thumbtack to complete urgent repairs, seasonal maintenance and bigger improvements. We help homeowners know which projects to do, when to do them and who to hire from our growing community of 300,000 local service businesses. If making an impact inspires you, join us. Imagine what we’ll build together.
ABOUT THE DATA ENGINEERING TEAM
Thumbtack’s Data Engineering org is split into 3 groups: Core Data Engineering, Data Platform and Embedded Data Engineering. This role is on the Embedded Data Engineering team, which breaks down into multiple business units that data engineers are embedded into. This role would be on the commercial operations side of the house and will work closely with engineers, analysts, data scientists and machine learning engineers to help design and curate data sets originating from internal and third-party sources to meet current and future needs. Over the next year, it will continue to build on its prior successes in building a more cohesive data warehouse while starting to work more deeply upstream to build data best practices into the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).
THE CHALLENGE
There are several teams all over Thumbtack with Terabytes of data and unique challenges trying to clean and organize this data to measure their performance. In this role, you will work with Engineers, Data Scientists, Managers, and others to understand their needs, and actively work to build datasets to tackle these challenges.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Collaboratively refine and evangelize a comprehensive framework for integrating data-thinking into the software development lifecycle for product teams.
- Design, architect, and maintain core operations datasets, data marts, and feature stores that support a blend of mature products and features with a rapidly evolving product line, in partnership with analytics, data science, and machine learning.
- Integrate deeply with our cross functional partners to understand their data needs, and help design datasets with the same engineering rigor as any other software we design.
- Drive data quality and best practices across different business areas.
- Help build the next generation data products at Thumbtack, leveraging AI models for code generation and incorporating agents into our workflows.
IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST BRING
- 4+ years of experience designing and building data sets and warehouses.
- Excellent ability to understand the needs of and collaborate with stakeholders in other functions, especially Analytics, and identify opportunities for process improvements across teams.
- Expertise in SQL for analytics/reporting/business intelligence and also for building SQL- and Python-based transforms inside an ETL pipeline, or similar.
- Experience designing, architecting, and maintaining a data warehouse and data marts that seamlessly stitches together data from production databases, clickstream data, and external APIs to serve multiple stakeholders.
- Expertise building the above with a modern data stack based on a cloud-native data warehouse, in our case we use BigQuery, dbt, and Apache Airflow, but a similar stack is fine.
- Experience using AI to generate design plans, code and documentation as well as applying AI-enabled workflows to accelerate development velocity and improve data engineering practices.
- Strong sense of ownership and pride in your work, from ideation and requirements-gathering to project completion and maintenance.
EXPECTED SALARY RANGES
- For candidates living in San Francisco / Bay Area, San Jose, New York City, or Seattle metros, the expected salary range for the role is currently $210,800.00 - $272,800.00.
- For candidates living in Austin, TX or Washington DC metros or in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington states, the expected salary range for the role is currently $189,600.00 - $245,300.00.
- For candidates living in all other US locations, the expected salary range for this role is currently $179,400.00 - $232,100.00.
Actual offered salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.

THUMBTACK HELPS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE CONFIDENTLY CARE FOR THEIR HOMES.

We help homeowners know which projects to do, when to do them and who to hire from our growing community of 300,000 local service businesses. If making an impact inspires you, join us. Imagine what we’ll build together.
ABOUT THE SUCCESS OPERATIONS TEAM
Success Operations shapes how Thumbtack’s Success organization runs. We design the strategies, programs, and processes that help pros and customers realize value quickly and predictably. Our team partners across Sales, Success, Service, Partnerships, Product, Data Science, and Finance to create clarity, alignment, and an operating rhythm that keeps the marketplace healthy.
We focus on building reliable processes, defining clear success metrics, generating insights that guide decisions, and driving the cross functional execution needed to improve marketplace outcomes. Our work ensures the Success organization operates consistently, scales effectively, and delivers meaningful impact for both sides of the marketplace.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Sr. Manager of Success Operations to own the strategy, tooling, and process that support our frontline teams across Manual Ops, Partnership Experiments, and the broader Experiments function that serves all of Success, plus the supply health model and levers that keep pro supply ready as more partners come online. You’ll lead a team of senior operations analysts and report to the Director of Success Operations. This role is about bringing structure to chaos: you're comfortable working in a highly entrepreneurial, highly ambiguous, highly versatile environment and building new processes from the ground up, rather than optimizing an already steady-state program. You'll decide where AI genuinely reduces manual load and where a human needs to stay in the loop. You will also shape team capabilities, leadership effectiveness, and talent decisions required to scale this work across Success.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Set the strategy, tooling, and outcome goals for the operations behind our biggest growth areas: launching and scaling new partner motions, keeping the supply of qualified pros ready, running the hands-on fulfillment that ensures jobs get matched and completed, and driving the test-and-learn engine that improves programs across Success.
- Serve as the single Commercial Ops liaison to Partnerships, translating new partner commitments and growth spikes into staffed, tooled, supply-ready frontline execution.
- Lead execution across Success, Partnerships, Product, Data Science, and Finance, resolving dependencies and adapting priorities as partner volume and supply needs change.
- Oversee the supply health model, dashboard, and levers, directing where to acquire, reactivate, or adjust pricing and job-fit while giving leaders a clear view of coverage, gaps, and required actions.
- Own headcount and capacity forecasting, business reviews, and executive narratives that translate fulfillment and supply signals into staffing plans and actionable directives.
- Set the test-and-learn strategy for fulfillment approaches, go-to-market motions, AI-enabled workflows, and automation, determining when to pilot manually and when to invest in scalable solutions.
- Lead and evolve a high-performing team of senior individual contributors, and/or operations analysts through strategic hiring, coaching, performance management, role clarity, and team-composition decisions.
IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST BRING
- 7+ years in Customer Success Operations, Marketplace Operations, Revenue Operations, Business Operations, or similar roles, including experience managing senior individual contributors.
- A background that blends strategic thinking with hands-on operations (for example strategy and operations, management consulting, or a GM or founder role), with a track record of breaking down ambiguous, high-complexity problems and turning them into clear, executable plans.
- Experience in a two-sided marketplace, gig economy platform, or fast-moving consumer/SMB ecosystem, ideally one that was supply-constrained or required balancing supply and demand.
- Track record of standing up a new operational motion under time pressure, shipping an imperfect version fast and iterating rather than waiting for a fully built system.
- Quantitative fluency: comfortable enough with coverage ratios, propensity or probability-based models, or similar frameworks to direct someone building one and sanity-check their output yourself.
- Hands-on experience shipping an AI-enabled workflow or automation in an operations context, including the judgment to know when automation isn't the right call.
- Strong executive presence and a track record of changing senior stakeholders' minds with data rather than title or authority.
EXPECTED SALARY RANGES
- For candidates living in San Francisco / Bay Area, San Jose, New York City, or Seattle metros, the expected salary range for the role is currently $190,400 - $246,400.
- For candidates living in Austin, TX or Washington DC metros or in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington states, the expected salary range for the role is currently $171,700 - $222,200
- For candidates living in all other US locations, the expected salary range for this role is currently $161,500 - $209,000

ABOUT THE PRO FEEDBACK AND TARGETING TEAM
At Thumbtack, the Pro Feedback and Targeting team is focused on 0->1 work that reinvents the way pro is matched with jobs. This involves moving away from a rigid and static set of questions to understand pro preferences, which often limits innovation and product changes. Our goal is to revamp this to a new, more flexible experience by building systems that leverage AI/LLMs to gain a deeper understanding of the types of jobs pros want and can do. This new system will learn and improve as pros use it, rather than remaining static, ultimately helping pros secure more and better jobs.
We've built conviction through research, experiments, and market-based tests that doing this successfully would be a big unlock for Thumbtack. We are starting to pilot this with a small group of pros. Joining this team now means you are joining an area that already has high conviction and momentum behind, but still has plenty of opportunity to be involved in driving the strategy and making large product changes. Successfully achieving this will not only strengthen Thumbtack's partnership with our pros but also unlock greater impact on the marketplace side and enhance the overall customer experience.
THE CHALLENGE
The primary challenge for an Engineering Manager (EM) within the New Hiring Experience org that the Pro Feedback and Targeting team is part of is to help homeowners across the U.S. search for and hire the most relevant home service professionals—and ultimately get their jobs done. We address this by tackling complex problems at the intersection of engineering, data science, and applied science.
We help homeowners start more projects on Thumbtack by enabling them to express their needs in everyday, conversational language through our search bar. This involves solving underlying challenges around query comprehension and problem scoping. As customers define their project, we help them share their preferences and availability to better match them with the most relevant professionals. We then support them in comparing and selecting the right pros for their job.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking an Engineering Manager for one of the cross-functional product teams (pods) within the larger New Hiring Experience org. You will partner with the Product Manager to help define technical & product strategy that include your team’s goals, and will be responsible for driving execution. You will also be responsible for coaching and managing engineers (backend, front end, iOS, Android) on a full-stack product team.
Given that the Pro Feedback and Targeting team is part of the New Hiring Experience org that is doing the 0->1 work to revamp Thumbtack’s core hiring journey, this is a high impact, high visibility role within the company. To be successful in this role, you will need to effectively collaborate with cross functional counterparts (product, design, applied science, data science etc.) across the company.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Define and evolve the technical vision and strategy for your team in partnership with Product, Design, and Applied Science.
- Collaborate effectively with teams across the company (e.g., Trust & Safety, Monetization) to drive cross-functional initiatives and resolve dependencies.
- Drive execution against team goals and OKRs while guiding the team through complex technical tradeoffs and delivering high-quality outcomes.
- Hire, coach, and manage full-stack engineers at all levels, including Staff+ engineers, while developing future technical leaders through regular feedback, performance management, and career development.
- Build and evolve a high-performing culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous learning on the team.
- Be accountable for maintaining, scaling, and operating the infrastructure owned by your team.
- Work closely with other engineering leaders to evolve Thumbtack's engineering culture, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and improve engineering practices in a high-paced growth environment.
IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU MUST BRING
- 2+ years of experience in an engineering management role.
- 5+ years of experience building software at scale.
- Experience partnering with Product, Design, Applied Science, and Data Science to define product and technical strategy.
- Strong technical judgment with experience guiding teams through complex architectural and product tradeoffs.
- Experience leading senior engineers, building high-performing teams, and coaching engineers through growth, performance, and career development.
- Strong cross-functional communication and collaboration skills with experience influencing across organizations.
- Experience using experimentation, A/B testing, market-based testing, qualitative research, and metrics to inform product and engineering decisions.

- For candidates living in Austin, TX or Washington DC metros or in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington states, the expected salary range for the role is currently $238,900.00 - $309,100.00.
- For candidates living in all other US locations, the expected salary range for this role is currently $225,300.00 - $291,500.00.
Actual offered salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
