About Upstart
At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.
As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.
We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City (opening Summer 2026), you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.
If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.
The Team:
Upstart's Product Quality team is responsible for answering a critical question for Upstart Bank: how do we know our lending products are working correctly, every day, for every borrower? The team provides independent first-line quality oversight across lending products and servicing experiences, evaluating whether product outputs, disclosures, credit decisions, and customer-facing workflows are operating as designed and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
As the Senior Manager, Product Quality at Upstart, you will build and lead a newly formed product quality function within a newly chartered OCC-regulated bank. This is a highly visible greenfield leadership role responsible for designing the operating model, quality methodologies, governance processes, and team structure that will support ongoing quality oversight across Upstart's lending products. You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Compliance Program Management, Risk, and Operations leaders to identify systemic issues, strengthen controls, and help ensure examination-ready quality practices.
How you’ll make an impact
Build and lead Upstart Bank's Product Quality program, establishing the frameworks, governance, and operating model used to evaluate whether lending products are producing accurate, compliant, and intended outcomes.
Design and implement quality methodologies, including product review checklists, sampling strategies, defect taxonomies, escalation criteria, monitoring routines, and quality reporting.
Evaluate product outputs across lending and servicing workflows, including disclosures, credit decisioning processes, customer communications, and other regulated product experiences.
Distinguish isolated product defects from systemic product failures by analyzing quality findings, identifying patterns, assessing customer and regulatory impact, and driving appropriate escalation paths.
Partner with Product, Engineering, and Compliance Program Management teams to investigate root causes, prioritize remediation efforts, and improve the reliability, effectiveness, and control environment of lending products.
Represent the Product Quality function in regulatory examinations, audits, governance forums, and cross-functional reviews while maintaining examination-ready documentation and workpapers.
Build, develop, and mentor a growing team of quality analysts, helping establish a culture of analytical rigor, sound judgment, continuous improvement, and proactive risk identification.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years of experience in consumer lending quality control, product quality, compliance testing, operational risk, audit, or related control functions.
3+ years of direct people management experience leading quality, risk, compliance, audit, or control oversight teams.
Experience designing and operating quality control or quality assurance programs focused on product, system, transaction, or operational outputs within consumer lending.
Working knowledge of consumer lending regulations, including Truth in Lending Act (TILA), Regulation B, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), and UDAAP, applied within lending products and customer-facing processes.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building or scaling first-line quality control programs within a regulated bank, fintech, or consumer lending organization.
Knowledge of automated lending platforms, digital lending products, decisioning systems, or technology-enabled credit origination processes.
Experience developing sampling methodologies, transaction testing programs, disclosure reviews, or defect identification frameworks.
Ability to translate quality findings into actionable recommendations for Product, Engineering, Compliance, and executive stakeholders.
Experience supporting regulatory examinations, internal audits, governance committees, or remediation programs within a highly regulated environment.
Position location Remote
Time zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.
Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.
The Team:
The Unsecured Consumer Lending team at Upstart Bank operates as the full first line of defense across product, growth, operations, and customer lifecycle for our personal loan, Cash Line, servicing and emerging consumer products. Compliance and controls are built into how we scale — not layered on at the end. This team is accountable for ensuring that everything we put in front of borrowers, partners, and regulators is accurate, fair, and examination-ready.
The Director, Compliance & Controls — Growth leads first-line compliance for Upstart’s growth engine: the acquisition channels, marketing programs, partner relationships, and product launches that bring borrowers to our platform across unsecured lending (personal loans and lines), servicing, and growth (for both unsecured and secured products). This is a senior accountability role at the intersection of lending growth and regulatory discipline — one that shapes how Upstart grows as much as how it controls.
How you’ll make an impact
Channel & partner oversight: Own first-line compliance and controls for the growth function — acquisition channels, marketing programs (social, direct mail, email, co-branded), partner and affiliate relationships, and new product introductions — reviewing each for regulatory, fair lending, and disclosure risk, and approving marketing materials and third-party-produced content before release.
Regulatory review & approval: Bring UDAAP, Regulation B, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, and disclosure expertise to the front of the design process — translating regulatory requirements into practical guidance for channel launches, partner agreements, and product changes at the design stage, not at the finish line.
Control framework: Build and maintain the business control framework: marketing approval policies, campaign inventory and change control, compliance monitoring, and regulatory change management. Quantify exposure and calibrate controls based on actual risk — not volume or optics.
Accountability: Own root cause analysis and remediation design for growth-related compliance matters — complaints, risk assessments, marketing claims violations, and disclosure errors — working with the issue management function to drive durable fixes tracked to completion.
Influence: Operate as a trusted compliance partner in both directions: enabling Growth, Product, Marketing, and ML teams to move with clarity and speed, while representing the business to second-line compliance, Legal, and auditors across risk assessments, fair lending reviews, and regulatory examinations. Maintain examination-ready documentation and serve as the business’s primary point of contact in audits and governance reviews.
Team leadership: Build and develop a compliance team with depth across consumer protection, marketing, and acquisition channel regulation. Set the standard for analytical rigor, proactive issue identification, and practical guidance that enables the business — not just gatekeeping.
Minimum Qualifications
Consumer lending experience: 7+ years in compliance, legal, or risk management in consumer lending, banking, or fintech
Marketing compliance: Direct experience in marketing compliance, customer acquisition oversight, or partner/affiliate compliance
Regulatory knowledge: Deep working knowledge of consumer protection regulations applicable to loan marketing and offer generation, including UDAAP, Regulation B, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, and applicable state laws
Program leadership: Demonstrated experience managing a first-line compliance function in a bank-regulated environment, including operating across first-line, second-line, and Legal structures with clear accountability; credible with regulators, internal audit, and senior leadership
Preferred Qualifications
Analytical rigor: Able to apply UDAAP, Regulation B, and related consumer protection frameworks to novel marketing and channel contexts — quantifying exposure and prioritizing controls based on materiality, not issue volume
Influence: Confident and credible with Growth and Product leaders, regulators, and second-line partners — including experience supporting OCC, CFPB, or state regulatory examinations on consumer lending compliance; able to hold a position and represent the business directly
Initiative: Track record of identifying compliance gaps in marketing programs, acquisition channels, or partner relationships before they escalate — proposing solutions and driving execution without waiting for direction
Ownership: Accountable end-to-end for compliance outcomes — works root causes through to resolution on marketing violations, disclosure issues, and control gaps, not just escalation
Secured lending: Familiarity with secured consumer lending marketing compliance, including HELOC or home equity lending
AI fluency: Familiarity with AI/ML-driven credit decisioning — including adverse action accuracy and fair lending implications — and comfort using AI tools to increase the efficiency and quality of compliance work

The Team:
Upstart’s Growth and Marketplace Optimization teams are responsible for building the decision systems that determine how offers are presented, optimized, and evolved across the customer journey. These systems sit at the intersection of machine learning, optimization, pricing, marketplace dynamics, and borrower behavior. The work spans partner channels, onsite experiences, and marketplace optimization, with the goal of improving conversion, borrower experience, lender surplus, and overall marketplace efficiency. As these systems continue to evolve, the organization is investing in a more unified technical vision that connects decision-making across stages rather than optimizing individual components in isolation.
The Role:
As a Principal Applied Scientist at Upstart, you will help define the long-term technical direction for some of Upstart’s most important offer optimization and conversion modeling systems. You will work across multiple teams to define how conversion modeling, offer optimization, and system design should fit together, ensuring models and optimization systems account for downstream effects, marketplace constraints, and customer outcomes.
This role is intentionally broad and high leverage. You will help structure ambiguous problem spaces, design solutions that account for interactions across multiple stages of the customer journey, and provide technical oversight to ensure work across multiple teams converges toward a coherent long-term vision. The work sits at the intersection of operations research, optimization, causal machine learning, and production decision systems.
How you’ll make an impact:
Define the technical vision for how offer decisioning systems should interconnect across partnerships, always-on systems, and marketplace optimization
Build and guide conversion modeling approaches that optimize decisions across multiple stages of the customer journey rather than in isolated local steps
Ensure models and decision policies at one stage account for downstream impacts, business constraints, and later-stage optimization opportunities
Design interfaces between decision systems and optimization or constraint-specification components
Drive cross-functional technical alignment across teams that currently own adjacent pieces of the problem
Scope and lead large, ambiguous initiatives that require both deep modeling judgment and strong systems thinking
Partner with scientists, engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to translate analytical insights into durable production approaches
Help ensure ongoing work across domains progresses toward a unified architecture and decisioning strategy
Contribute directly to implementation and experimentation efforts, including prototyping models, reviewing code, and helping teams operationalize new approaches in production environments.
Minimum Qualifications:
Advanced degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, operations research, or a related discipline
8+ years of experience building and deploying machine learning models into production at scale
Experience with optimization, operations research, or constrained decision-making problems
Working knowledge of causal inference or causal machine learning
Strong grounding in statistics and probability
Experience leading large cross-functional technical initiatives with multiple stakeholders
Experience working across multiple technical teams to align approaches, define interfaces, and move toward a shared vision
Experience solving real-world machine learning or data science problems in a high-impact production environment
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in operations research, statistics, economics, computer science, or another quantitative field
Experience with offer optimization, pricing systems, marketplace optimization, or related decisioning systems
Experience with end-to-end modeling from problem framing through productionization
Experience in fintech, lending, marketplaces, or other domains where decisions must account for downstream constraints and business tradeoffs
Experience serving as a principal-level technical lead across multiple teams or product areas
Experience mentoring other senior scientists or raising the technical bar across an organization

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability
Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026
Why are you being asked to complete this form?
We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.
