💻 ROLE
We're looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to own the path between Whatnot's customers and our code. The Traffic team owns every hop along that path: the edge, DNS, private connectivity, the service mesh, TLS, and internal access. We make it fast, reliable, and secure by default, so product engineers ship globally without thinking about the network.
You'll partner closely with Reliability and Platform Engineering to get observability right. Network problems are only debuggable if the data already exists when the incident starts, so you'll work with those teams to instrument every layer of a request, land those signals in the tooling engineers already use, and make "is it the network?" a question answered with evidence in minutes instead of debated for hours. You'll work with Security just as closely on how traffic enters, leaves, and moves inside our perimeter.
This is a hands-on, software-first role rather than a network administration one. You'll write controllers, extensions, and automation, and the bar for success is that other engineers stop needing to think about the layer you own.
Our surface area covers the full journey of a request, and you will work across most of it:
- Shape how traffic reaches us at the edge, from caching and security posture to the routing decisions that determine how fast Whatnot feels in each part of the world
- Build and scale the private connectivity that carries traffic between our services, accounts, and clusters, and keep it secure as the topology grows
- Push our service proxy and mesh layer further, tuning it for the traffic patterns we actually have and extending it when the off-the-shelf configuration stops being enough
- Keep name resolution, TLS, and internal access boring, and automated, to the engineers who depend on them
- Make the network legible. Every layer of a request should be instrumented well enough that "is it the network?" gets answered with evidence in minutes instead of debated for hours
- Design for the failure cases first. Network changes carry enormous blast radius, so you will build tooling that makes correct changes easy and dangerous ones hard, and rehearse failover before we need it
We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our Seattle or San Francisco hub.
👋 YOU
People who do well at Whatnot tend to be comfortable figuring things out as they go, biased toward action, and genuinely curious about what they're building. They care more about outcomes than credit and stay close to the product and the people using it.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience preferably running the network behind high-traffic applications.
- Have deep, hands-on experience (3+ years) with Istio and Envoy. You know the components and configuration surface intimately and have tuned them successfully for very different use cases
- Have written custom Envoy extensions when configuration alone wasn't enough
- Know Kubernetes networking deeply, from CNI behavior and pod and service networking to ingress and how traffic actually moves inside and between clusters
- Have operated a CDN at scale, preferably Cloudflare
- Have run globally distributed applications and understand what differs when your users and your infrastructure sit in different regions
- Have owned latency-sensitive systems and can reason precisely about where milliseconds come from and go
- Have strong networking fundamentals across DNS, TLS, TCP, and routing, plus genuine curiosity about the layers beneath the application
- Know modern cloud provider networking deeply, AWS in particular. You have designed VPC topology at scale and understand the tradeoffs between Transit Gateway, PrivateLink, peering, and NAT well enough to pick the right one and defend it
- Debug across boundaries. You are comfortable with packet captures, proxy logs, and traces, and you answer "is it the network?" with data

💻 ROLE
Enterprise Engineering supports the needs of our largest and most complex sellers. As sellers grow their businesses on Whatnot, their needs evolve—and this team builds the systems and tooling to support them at scale.
Enterprise is looking for their next software engineer who will operate at the intersection of engineering and customer success—working directly with enterprise sellers and their technical teams to design, implement, and support custom integrations on top of Whatnot’s APIs and infrastructure. Unlike a traditional software engineering role, you’ll have a direct line to the customers using what you build. You’ll spend your time writing code, building internal tooling, automating repetitive support workflows, developing integrations, and identifying product gaps that can be solved once instead of manually worked around hundreds of times.
This role is ideal for a software engineer who wants to transition into a more customer-facing role, partnering directly with enterprise sellers and their engineering teams to help them successfully adopt live commerce. You’ll build integrations, tooling, and scalable technical solutions that make onboarding and operating on Whatnot seamless, while helping shape how we support the next generation of enterprise sellers as our platform continues to grow.
The role entails:
- Partnering directly with enterprise sellers and their engineering teams to architect and implement bespoke integrations leveraging Whatnot’s APIs and platform capabilities.
- Acting as the technical bridge between customers and internal teams—translating seller needs into scalable solutions while collaborating closely with engineering, product, and account management stakeholders.
- Building durable tooling, workflows, and support infrastructure that help scale enterprise onboarding, integration support, and long-term customer success, including hands-on coding focused on developing scalable integration solutions and internal operational tooling.
- Solving complex post-sale technical challenges while helping define how Whatnot supports enterprise commerce moving forward.
We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York or Seattle hub.
👋 YOU
People who do well at Whatnot tend to be comfortable figuring things out as they go, biased toward action, and genuinely curious about what they're building. They care more about outcomes than credit and stay close to the product and the people using it.
As our next engineer on Enterprise, you should have 3+ years of software engineering experience, plus:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to work with customers directly, both satiating customer expectations as well and ensuring internal company strategic standards and goals are met.
- Comfort talking to customers directly. You can run a technical conversation with an external engineering team, ask the questions that surface the real requirement, and say no when the right answer is a platform fix rather than a one-off.
- Ability to flexibly work across multiple workstreams, thriving in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to understand complex customer success workflows and envision and build tooling to better support our bespoke system.
- Strong grounding in APIs, distributed systems, and data synchronization — you've debugged something gnarly across a system boundary you didn't control.
- A track record of automating away work rather than absorbing it. You get uncomfortable doing the same manual fix twice.
- Ability to take ownership of an ambiguous area, define it, and drive impact — this role has no playbook yet.
- Experience with e-commerce or operational systems (Shopify, ChannelAdvisor, Magento, NetSuite, ShipStation, WMS/ERP platforms) is a plus.
🎁 BENEFITS
- Flexible Time off Policy and Company-wide Holidays (including a spring and winter break)
- Health Insurance options including Medical, Dental, Vision
- Work From Home Support
- Home office setup allowance
- Monthly allowance for cell phone and internet
- Care benefits

💻 Role
Every package that moves between a Whatnot seller and buyer touches a carrier — and shipping is one of the largest cost and experience levers in the business. As Senior Manager / Director of Carrier Operations, you will own Whatnot's global carrier function end to end: the relationships, the economics, the operating rhythm, and the team behind them. Our network spans domestic and international parcel carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx, Royal Mail, DHL, DPD, Mondial Relay, Canada Post, Australia Post, and more) as well as shipping integrators like Shippo and Sendcloud. In this role you will:
Own carrier performance monitoring. Build and run the daily/weekly monitoring of shipping health — margin, on-time delivery, label generation success, scan rates, surcharge and refund rates, and CX contact volume — define the topline carrier KPIs, surface degradation early, and drive issues to resolution with the right internal and external owners.
Own carrier pricing. Understand and size every carrier price change (rate cards, surcharges, fuel, zone remapping), decide with Product/Eng and business leadership whether and how to pass changes through, coordinate customer communications and CX readiness, and hold carriers accountable to advance notice on pricing and data changes.
Lead disruption response. Monitor and respond to carrier API changes, tariffs and regulatory shifts (e.g., de minimis changes), carrier policy updates, and weather events — quarterbacking coordinated cross-functional responses with Product, Engineering, CX, Trust & Safety, and Public Policy.
Own shipping cost integrity. Run the invoice reconciliation process across all carriers and integrators, ensure carrier charges map correctly to internal data, drive rate shadowing to catch mispricing, and partner with Accounting, Strategic Finance, and Analytics to reconcile margin reporting into a single trusted source of truth.
Manage carrier relationships and negotiations. Own the weekly/biweekly operating cadence with each carrier and integrator, set agendas that drive our priorities, escalate and resolve operational issues (rate card mismatches, incorrect surcharges, RTS spikes, collections delays), and lead or support rate negotiations, RFPs, and contract changes.
Recover money we're owed. Own claims at scale (thousands of loss/damage claims per week), bulk claims programs, unused label refunds, and overcharge credits — a direct, measurable margin lever.
Own carrier-side seller and CX operations. Oversee high-value stuck-shipment resolution, BYOL support, seller collections, hazmat violation management, and carrier violation remediation in partnership with Account Managers and Support.
Launch and scale. Onboard new carriers, service levels, lanes, and markets — from commercial diligence through data integration and ramp — and set the 12–18 month strategy for the carrier function as Whatnot's volume and international footprint grow.
Build and lead the team. Manage and develop a team of carrier operations analysts and associates, define clear ownership across monitoring, pricing, reconciliation, and escalations, and identify what to automate, playbook, or hand off as we scale.
👋 You
Curious about who thrives at Whatnot? We've found that low ego, a growth mindset, and leaning into action and high impact goes a long way here. As our Senior Manager / Director of Carrier Operations you should have:
8–12+ years of experience in parcel/carrier operations, logistics, transportation procurement, or marketplace operations — ideally at a high-volume ecommerce company, marketplace, 3PL, integrator, or carrier
Experience owning carrier relationships and negotiations, including rate cards, surcharges, SLAs, and contract terms across multiple domestic and international carriers
Deep fluency in parcel economics and cost integrity: rate structures, fuel and peak surcharges, VAT/tax treatment, FX, invoice audit and reconciliation, and claims recovery
Strong analytical rigor — you're comfortable owning shipping margin down to the invoice line and reconciling numbers across finance, accounting, and analytics systems; SQL and tools like Sigma, Hex, or Looker are a strong plus
Proven cross-functional leadership: you can align Product, Engineering, Finance, CX, and external partners around a plan, and run a tight operating cadence with vendors
Experience managing and developing a team, including building playbooks and delegating standardized work
Calm, structured incident response instincts — you're the person people want running point when a carrier changes an API, a lane starts failing, or a tariff lands
International shipping and cross-border experience (customs, duties, de minimis, VAT) strongly preferred
Ability to think strategically and execute methodically in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment
