OPEN ROLE
Web Designer
The interview process
The Design team page
SF, NY or Remote (US)
Members of the Brand Design team bring the Hex brand to life across every customer and employee touchpoint. As our Web Designer, you will lead the Web pillar within Brand Design — owning the strategy, UX/UI, art direction, and execution across our website, documentation surfaces, and other web surfaces.
You’ll operate as both a player/coach and eventually hire + mentor a small web design team as we scale.
About the role
Own and execute the design and experience of Hex’s web surfaces, including our website, documentation site, product launches, and future digital experiences.
This is first and foremost a highly hands-on design role. You’ll own work from concept through final execution, setting an exceptional bar for visual design, UX, typography, interaction, and craft.
You’ll also play a major role in how Hex tells its product story. Working closely with Product Marketing, Content, and Product, you’ll help determine how our product is represented across marketing surfaces: what we show, what we simplify, what deserves interaction or motion, and how design can make complex ideas feel clear and compelling.
While broader web and content strategy is shared across Marketing, this role will own the design and UX strategy of our web experiences, bringing a strong point of view on how structure, interaction, visual hierarchy, and product storytelling come together.
What you’ll do
Design and web experience
Own and execute the design and UX of Hex’s website, documentation site, campaign experiences, and future web surfaces.
Create exceptional, highly crafted digital experiences from early concept through shipped execution.
Establish and maintain visual quality, patterns, interaction principles, and consistency across Hex’s web ecosystem.
Continually evolve core surfaces rather than treating the website as a collection of one-off redesign projects.
Partner with Marketing on broader web priorities while owning the design perspective on hierarchy, UX, interaction, and how users experience the Hex story.
Balance strong systems thinking with the ability to create bespoke moments when the story calls for something more distinctive.
Product launches and storytelling
Own and execute the design expression of major product launches alongside Brand and Product Marketing.
Translate complex product capabilities into clear, compelling, and memorable visual stories.
Participate early in launch and content planning, bringing a design perspective to how a story should unfold rather than simply executing against a finished brief.
Develop a strong point of view on how Hex’s product should be depicted across marketing, from product UI and screenshots to demos, diagrams, illustration, conceptual visuals, and interactive experiences.
Help determine what needs to be shown, what can be simplified, and which ideas benefit from demonstration rather than explanation.
Create repeatable storytelling patterns that allow our product to feel coherent across the homepage, product pages, launches, campaigns, events, and content.
Ensure major product moments feel visually clear, differentiated, and unmistakably Hex.
Motion and interaction
Use motion and interaction intentionally to clarify ideas, demonstrate product behavior, and make Hex feel alive.
Create lightweight motion, product animations, micro-interactions, transitions, and interactive storytelling moments.
Establish a strong point of view on where motion adds meaning versus decoration.
Explore new ways to make product stories more dynamic and experiential across the web.
Partner with motion specialists or external collaborators when an idea requires deeper production support.
Design and UX strategy
Bring a strong point of view on how UX, visual hierarchy, interaction, and narrative work together.
Help define how different audiences encounter and understand Hex across our marketing surfaces.
Partner with Brand, Content, Product Marketing, and Product on content planning, identifying where design can make a story clearer or more compelling.
Help determine how information should be structured and sequenced, what deserves emphasis, and what format is best suited to telling a particular product story.
Influence how Hex represents an increasingly broad product platform without losing clarity or personality.
Identify opportunities to evolve Hex’s digital design language and how we show up in the world.
Use research, performance signals, experimentation, and design intuition to continually improve the experience.
Hands-on development
Take your own designs all the way into production using HTML, CSS, React/Next.js.
Prototype and ship interactive experiences where working directly in the browser produces a better result.
Use AI-assisted design and development tools to prototype, explore, and ship high-quality experiences faster.
Experiment with emerging AI tools and workflows, with strong judgment about where they improve the work and where craft still needs a human hand.
Collaborate closely with engineering partners on larger or more technically complex work.
Care deeply about implementation details and ensure the shipped experience reflects the intent of the design.
Help establish front-end patterns and workflows that make high-quality execution faster and more repeatable.
Balance creative ambition with performance, accessibility, maintainability, and speed.
Team and creative influence
Influence the processes, standards, critique rituals, and creative culture of the Design team.
Help establish stronger ways of working across Brand, Product Marketing, Product Design, Content, and Engineering.
Bring external inspiration and new thinking into how Hex approaches digital design and product storytelling.
Identify where additional design, motion, or engineering support could have the greatest impact.
About you
You might be a great fit if you:
Have 8+ years of experience across web, visual, UI, or digital product design.
Have exceptional hands-on craft across UX, typography, interaction, and visual systems.
Are a strong product storyteller, particularly for technical, B2B, developer, data, or product-led companies.
Think strategically about design and UX and can connect creative decisions to audience, narrative, product, and business goals.
Have a strong eye for motion and interaction.
Can ship production-quality work in HTML, CSS, and React/Next.js.
Are curious and capable with AI-assisted design and development workflows.
Operate autonomously and are comfortable owning work from concept through launch.
In addition to our unique culture, Hex proudly offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched salary & equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.

About Us
Socket helps devs and security teams ship faster by cutting out security busywork. Thousands of orgs use Socket to safely find, audit, and manage open source code. Our customers - from Anthropic to xAI, and Figma to Vercel - love Socket (just check out their tweets to see for yourself!)
Founded by Feross Aboukhadijeh, a long-time open source maintainer with software downloaded over a billion times a month, Socket has raised $125M in funding from top angels, operators, and security leaders.
A Letter From our Founder & CEO: The world now runs on open source. Every company, every product, every device you touch depends on code written by strangers on the internet. This is one of humanity’s greatest achievements, but it’s also one of its greatest vulnerabilities. When the software supply chain breaks, the world breaks with it.
Our job at Socket is simple to describe and incredibly hard to execute: protect the software that powers everything.
That requires world-class engineering, but it also requires world-class design.
Security tools are infamous for blinking lights, noisy dashboards, and walls of alerts that no human can keep up with. Developers don't need more noise. They need clarity. They need tools that help them see the truth instantly so they can act with confidence.
This is where design becomes a strategic weapon.
Great design in security isn't ornamental. It's leverage. It's how we reduce cognitive load, cut through chaos, and make the complex feel intuitive. It's how we give millions of developers a sense of control in an environment that often feels unknowable. It's how we move the entire industry forward.
Socket now has five products that all share the same purpose but solve different layers of the supply chain problem: Socket Open Source, Socket Firewall, Socket Certified Patches, Socket Basics, and Extension Guard.
Your role is to bring coherence, clarity, and vision to the platform as a whole.
You'll work directly with the CEO (Feross), with our engineering team, with our sales and marketing teams, and with our customers who rely on Socket to secure mission-critical systems. Your fingerprints will be on everything we ship. This isn't a supportive design function. It's a core leadership role shaping how developers experience the future of supply chain security.
Some of the most design-driven teams in the world use Socket — Vercel, OpenAI, Figma, Replit, and others. These teams care about clarity, craft, and speed, and they expect tools that meet their standards. Your work will be in front of people who notice the details, which pushes all of us to raise the bar. It's one of the most energizing parts of this role.
We're looking for someone who sweats the details, thinks in systems, obsesses about clarity, and understands that design is as much about how things work as how they look. Someone who can help us define the primitives, patterns, and interactions that let developers move fast without compromising safety. Someone who wants to build a standard the rest of the industry follows.
This is a rare opportunity to design a product that protects the global software ecosystem. The work you do here will directly influence how the world builds and ships code. If you care about craft, if you care about impact, and if you want your design work to matter on a massive scale, then you'll thrive here.
Let's build the future of secure software together.
What You'll Do
Shape the entire platform, your work will create the coherent vision that ties everything together, ensuring that whether a developer is using Socket Open Source, the Firewall, Certified Patches, or any of our other products, they experience clarity and craft.
Lead design as strategy, your design decisions will directly influence how developers understand and interact with supply chain security. You'll think in systems, define design primitives that scale across our platform, and obsess over the details that separate good products from great ones.
Partner with leadership, your voice will be essential in shaping what we build, how we prioritize, and how we communicate the value of Socket to the world.
Design end-to-end experiences across Socket's product portfolio that make complex security concepts feel approachable and actionable for developers.
Work with the engineering team to develop interfaces that abstract away complexity while preserving the rigor and precision security demands.
Establish and evolve Socket's design system, creating patterns and components that let us move fast without compromising on craft or consistency.
Shape the visual and interaction language that developers associate with Socket, establishing a standard others follow.
Participate in customer conversations to understand how developers actually use our products and where clarity breaks down.
Help define the roadmap and prioritize design opportunities that will have the most impact on adoption and user success.
Be part of hiring and building a world-class design team as we grow.
What You'll Bring
You've shipped products at a high bar and understand the difference between surface-level polish and systems-level clarity.
Deep experience designing for developers or technical audiences, you understand the contexts where clarity really matters.
Portfolio that demonstrates systems thinking: how you've defined design languages, built component systems, and maintained consistency across complex products.
Comfort working directly with engineering and product leadership, able to move fast and make decisions without excessive process.
Experience designing security or infrastructure tools is a plus, but not required, what matters is your ability to take complexity and make it clear.
You care about craft. The details matter to you, not because they're decorative but because they're functional. You understand that every pixel, every interaction, every word choice shapes how someone experiences a product.
We know how important clarity is when looking for a new role, so we've put together a read-me about the Interview Process at Socket.
Benefits: Our benefits are crafted to support you and your family, so you can take care of what matters most and thrive in and outside of work. We offer:
Market competitive salary bands
Meaningful equity program
Comprehensive health benefits for you and your family (99% coverage)

At Socket, we
Pursue Excellence: We set ourselves apart by consistently delivering work of exceptional quality and distinction.
Move with urgency and focus: We prioritize swift, decisive action.
