About Insitu
Insitu is building technology to dramatically accelerate industrial development and empower economic developers. Economic development organizations (EDOs) representing cities, counties, and states are critical to pushing forward our industrial renaissance. Every day, EDOs engage local landowners, build community support, coordinate with utilities, negotiate incentives, and solve countless other problems behind-the-scenes to win projects, jobs, and revenue for their regions. Their efforts are critical in turning the >$1 trillion per year of industrial infrastructure demand into reality.
Despite their central role in this renaissance, EDOs remain underserved by modern technology. At Insitu, we're fixing this by building decision-oriented software and AI capabilities to transform EDO operations, including accelerating site development while reducing costs, driving proactive business recruitment, and enabling rapid and compelling responses to inbound RFIs. We build software, but our mission is to help EDOs win projects. We measure success not in the number of software licenses sold or in usage, but in the projects that our tools facilitate - everything from advanced manufacturing hubs and data centers, to fabrication facilities and multi-family housing.
Insitu’s founding team brings two decades of experience in economic development, energy and infrastructure investment, grid modeling, and enterprise software from Stanford University, Palantir Technologies, Goldman Sachs, and Two Sigma. Insitu is backed by leading venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz, and has previously won support from the Department of Energy and Stanford University.
The Role
US-Remote with Regular Travel
We are seeking our first economic development professional to build new EDO partnerships and drive successful outcomes for all our EDO partners. You will own and grow customer relationships, directly inform product decisions, and unlock new markets that helps Insitu become the most advanced and trusted technology partner to economic development teams.
At Insitu, we believe no two EDOs are the same, and thus we are not building a single 'economic development software platform' to be provided to all EDOs. We instead partner with our EDO customers and build tailored solutions for their specific needs. In this role, you will leverage your economic development experience to deeply understand each EDO’s unique priorities, strengths and constraints, and work with our engineering team to extend Insitu’s platform to achieve each EDO’s goals.
This is not a standard sales role — your responsibilities do not end at contract signing. This is also not just an advisory role where you simply instruct engineering teams to build what you believe will be valuable to economic developers. Instead, you will treat the success of EDOs who have placed their trust in us as your own, and drive towards it by wielding and expanding our technology alongside our engineers.
You will also inform the continued growth of Insitu’s product and economic development data foundation, which combines 100+ data sources ranging from extensive geospatial data, to land parcel data, to global company and supply chain data, and enables us to efficiently build custom solutions for each EDO partner.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will be:
Able to leverage deep EDO relationships and ecosystem knowledge to source customers in at least one of the following high-priority regions for Insitu: Southeast (NC/SC/VA/GA/TN); Southwest (TX/OK/NM/CO); Midwest (IL/MI/OH); California and Pacific Northwest. We think at least 5 years of economic development industry experience is ideal (CeCDs welcome!), but more important than the “years of experience” is a track record of successfully working with key decision-makers and stakeholders to drive high priority outcomes in economic development.
Able to navigate complex EDO organizations and identify where Insitu’s technology can deliver value by combining their economic development expertise, the specific priorities, strengths, and constraints of our partner EDO, and Insitu’s technological capabilities.
Willing to travel regularly (at least bi-monthly) to meet with customers and partners. As economic developers you know better than anyone else that there is no substitute for being in the same room as your stakeholders. We think the same is true for software deployment and believe there is no substitute for in-person workshops and desk-sides when scoping each EDOs needs and ensuring Insitu’s tools are delivering real value.
Able to directly engage with and inform software product decisions. You are not expected to know how to code when you begin. However, we are an engineering-first culture where we expect you to (with our asssistance) become familiar with our data foundation and AI technology and ‘get your hands dirty.’
Creative in engaging customers, including strategic expansions to other economic development stakeholders. We expect our value proposition for our EDO customers to continually expand, and we are not at all limited by our current product offerings. We also know our capabilities are valuable to stakeholders in economic development that fall outside of traditional EDOs. You will be encouraged to identify and advance these strategic expansion opportunities.
Excited about our mission!
At its core, Insitu is about empowering thousands of organizations critical to industrial and infrastructure development that have been ignored by traditional software companies. A typical day will see you working with an EDO trying to find a suitable piece of land for a new data center, an EDO wrestling with a poorly-maintained commercial real estate listings database in trying to quickly respond to an RFI from a manufacturer looking for their next factory, and an EDO preparing for an upcoming trade mission to South Korea. Common to all of these disparate-seeming workflows is the desire to bring good businesses, good jobs, and stable revenue to their regions. For us at Insitu, this North Star is a source of endless motivation and we want everyone on our team to share in it.

Our Mission
Across America, thousands of economic development organizations (EDOs) representing cities, counties, and states are pushing forward America’s industrial renaissance. Every day, they engage local landowners, build community support, coordinate with utilities, negotiate incentives, and solve countless other problems behind-the-scenes to win projects, jobs, and revenue for their regions. Their efforts are critical in turning the >$1 trillion per year of industrial infrastructure demand into reality.
Despite their central role in this renaissance, EDOs remain badly underserved by modern technology. At Insitu, we're fixing this by building decision-oriented software and AI capabilities to transform EDO operations. We build software, but our mission is to help EDOs win projects. We measure success not in the number of software licenses sold or in usage, but in the projects that our tools help facilitate - everything from advanced manufacturing hubs and data centers, to metal fabrication facilities and multi-family housing.
The Role
US-Remote with Monthly Travel
We are seeking a full-stack software engineer excited to build user-facing applications for economic development teams, expand Insitu's economic development-focused data foundation, and own our cloud infrastructure. You will directly work with the founding team, which brings two decades of combined experience in economic development, energy and infrastructure investment, grid modeling, and enterprise software from Stanford University, Palantir Technologies, Goldman Sachs, and Two Sigma.
No two EDOs are the same, so we are not building a single 'economic development platform' in Silicon Valley to be pushed out to EDOs across the country. Instead, we embed deeply with our partners to understand their regions' priorities and build tailored tools. We can do this with ever-increasing efficiency because we continue to invest in a common, underlying data foundation that combines >100 data sources ranging from extensive geospatial data, to land parcel data, to global company and supply chain data. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on both customer-specific workflows and applications, as well as own parts of our common data model.
We also constantly dogfood our integrated data and AI capabilities to identify potential transactions that we can directly support, which will give you the opportunity to be involved in industrial infrastructure transactions beyond what our EDO partners are pursuing.
We use React on the frontend, and Postgres and Python on the backend. We extensively use LLM-based coding tools in our day-to-day. We also heavily leverage LLMs in our core pipelines and within user-facing applications.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will be:
Enthusiastic about iterating with non-technical end-users at EDOs. You'll be building for people who live and breathe economic development, not software.
Able to directly engage with users and prospective customers and decompose business problems into potential technical solutions, and not be limited to building fully-specified products.
Willing to travel to partners across Kentucky, California, and North Carolina. We are remote-friendly in our internal operations, but believe there is no substitute for whiteboards and desk-sides when it comes to our users.
Opinionated on the stack and technical architecture without letting their idea of perfection stand in the way of delivering for our customers.
Experienced in building software via an embedded/'forward-deployed' approach, or extremely hungry for this responsibility. We think 4-6 years of industry experience is ideal, but we intentionally are not prescribing X years of industry experience or academic background for this role.
Excited about our mission!
At its core, Insitu is about empowering thousands of organizations critical to industrial and infrastructure development that have been ignored by traditional software companies. This often requires patience with bureaucracy, traveling to places with poor connectivity, and rapid context switching. For us at Insitu, this North Star is a source of endless motivation and we want everyone on our team to share in it.
Compensation and Benefits
This is an early technical hire and the compensation (cash and equity) will be commensurate with that level of responsibility. We offer health, dental and vision for US-based employees, generous PTO, life and disability insurance, and 401(k) plans.
